At a meeting of the beet root sugar

resolutions were adopted against compul
sory reduction of the cultivation of beet
roots. , Manufacturers believe that the
necessary reduction will come naturally,
owing to the state of the sugar trade. .
General Klapska recently convoked a
meeting at Pesth of the veterans of the
war of 188. He has compiled a declara
tion acquitting General Georgey of trea
son. A deputation will present the origi

week. Keith lived but a few hours. It
was an unprovoked murder, and lynching
is feared.
Dr. Mrs. Ilelem Cummings, of South
Boston, Mass., has been arrested for the
murder of Mrs. William G. Hill, caused
through carelessly placing the wrong labels
on two bottles.

The Surgeon-General of the Marine Hos
pital at Washington reports that the fever
has again broken out on the west coast of
Mexico, in the most malignant form. The
city of Colima, 1,450 feet above the sea
level, has not escaped the fever: it also
rages in Manzanilla.
At a meeting or the American paper
manufacturers held in New York recently
t seemed to be the general opinion that
the price of paper should be increased to
correspond with the increased price of
rags, and that there should be a decided
curtailment of production.
John T. Pleasants, editor of the Mail,
an afternoon paper published at Pittsburg,
Pa., was convicted last week and sen
tenced to pay a fine of So and be impris
oned one minute in jail for publishing on
June 17th last a libelous card reflectiag on
the character of W. T. Lawrence.
The plumbers were successful in their
strike in New York, last week, in which
they demanded that one hour for dinner
should be given, and that work should
cease during the winter months when
darkness set in. They were also recom
pensed for the time they were out.
The town of Mayberry, N. C, is greatly
excited over the discovery of Jour headless
skeletons, in an old dry well, beneath the
kitchen of a house formerly occupied by
an eccentric cabinet maker named Malcom
Redfearn. The heads were also discovered
in a basket a short distance from the
trunks.
? The ninth annual meeting of the Ameri
can Academy was held in Baltimore last
week. A resolution was adopted thanking
W. H. Vanderbilt for the gift to the Col
lege of Physicians and Surgeons of New
York. Albert Gibbons was elected presi
dent and Oliver Wendell Holmes was
elected honorary member.
Adrien Hitt, who started from the East
River bridge June 19th, to walk to Cali
fornia on a wager of 82,000, that he could
walk thirty miles a day, won the bet, and
is now on his way walking back on a
wager of 84,600, to reach New York in
ninety days. He has gained twelve
pounds while on tho tramp.
Edna Allen, aged 5 years, daughter of
Rhodes Allen, of Decatur, 111., jumped in
to a hog lot the other day and several sows
tore and mutilated her a horrible manner.
One ear was torn off, the left eye was eat
out, her left arm broken and every stitch of
clothing, except part of an underskirt, was
stripped from her body. She will die.

WHEAT The market is in fair motion.
Both shippers and growers appear to be
working im unison. It is certainly desira
ble to get as much of the crop out of the
state before the heavy rains set in, and
harmony among the parties directly inter
ested helps matters materially. The sell
ing figures for No. 1 grade seems to be es
tablished at 81.25, as this rate is generally
accepted for parcels that come fairly up to
standard. Of course,something of choicer
character is taken at Sl.-26, while milling
lots that possess extra attractive features

and probably less, while samples of yet
lower description receive no attention, and
