A heavy dock gate has fallen into the

The citizens of Catania, Sicily, have sub
scribed a sufficient sum to redeem the
golden cross, which was presented to the
Cardinal of San Felice by the Pope, and
which the former gave to the sunerers by
the recent tornado there.
The appropriation for the Harbor of
Refuge at Kmgsville, at Lake Erie, prov
ing insufficient to complete the work, a
Setition for an additional grant of $40,000
as been forwarded to the Canadian gov
ernment, and Is favorably received.
A Toronto dispatch says: The statement
telegraphed from London that Canada has
offered men and money to the Cape Colo
nies, to sustain them in the struggle with
Boers, is news to the Canadiana. No such
offer has ever been made public here.
Says a London dispatch: Sir Charles
Dilke, President of the local government
board, in a speech at Oldham ! recently,
said if .the Tories would propose a reason
able re-distribution scheme the govern
ment would be found anxious to meet
them.
A Montreal dispatch of a recent date
says the evidence furnished the authori
ties in conn"ction with the Quebec explo
sions, shown the outrage was not com
mitted by Irish Nationalists, as supposed,
but by enemies of the contractor of the
parliament building.
Three pf the brigands who attacked the
Turkish mail caravan from Bagdad, near
Constantinople recently, and robbed it of
$300,000, have been captured by the troops.
The others will Boon be captured. Part of
the money has been recovered, and an
other portion is also expected to be se
cured. In the French Chamber of Deputies last
week, Lauquis placed on the table an
amendment to the cattle customs bill,
which proposes to fix a duty of five francs
per hundred kilograms on foreign corn.
The amendment also proposes that the
principal authorities of the provinces be
empowered to fix the price of bread and
meat.
The London Standard ia its financial
column last week says: There are re
newed reports of serious difficulties im
pending in Liverpool produce shipping
trades. One company of the American
liners recently called a formal meeting of
its creditors and revealed its inability
fully to meet its engagements, but no
formal bankruptcy was apprehended.
The third and concluding volume of Mr.
James A. Froude's biography of Thomas
Carlyle has just been published in Lon
don, and is likely to prove the literary sen
sation of the present season. It embraces
the period from 1834 to the death of Mr.
Carlyle, in February, 1881, and is accom
panied by a preface, in which Mr. Froude
elaborately vindicates his conduct as Mr.
Carlyle's literary executor.
While Lord Salisbury was speaking at
Dumfries, Scotland, the other night, a
mob dispersed his audience and stoned
the distinguished speaker, who hastily re
tired and entered his carriage. He was
literally chased to his hotel by a howling
mob. The hotel was surrounded and the
windows smashed. The police were una
' b)e to preserve order. At a late hour Sal
isbury took the train for London.

ton, it was speedily extinguished, caus
ing only a slight damage.
Minnie Cummings. an actress, obtained
a verdict of $25,000 last week against Wil
liam B. Davis, a police officer, and Delia
Murphy, milliner, of New York, in an ac
tion for false imprisonment.
The Reading Coal and Iron Company's
shaft was discovered to be on fire last
week. The vein being perpendicular it is
impossible to reach the tire. The mine
will probably have to be flooded. The loss
will be heavy.
The Treasury Department last week is
sued a warrant for $166,667 in favor of the
President of the World's Industrial and
Cotton Exposition. This is the fourth in
stallment , of $1,000,000 appropriated by
Congress for the Exposition.
The physicians sent by the Minnesota
State Board of Health to investigate the
disease at Brookings, Dak., report it to be
the most virulent type f small-pox. At
least 150 people have been directly exposed
and the gravest results are reared.
:The steamer Elder, from Bremen and
Southampton, completed the voyage in
seven days and five minutes from Queens
town, making the Elder the fourth fastest
steamer afloat, having only been beaten
by the America, Oregon and Alaska.
. Charles Mitchell, the pugilist, has is
sued a challenge to Dommick McCaffrey
to fight within six weeks, with hard
gloves or bare fists, in any city in the
world, barring New Orleans, from $500 to
$2,500 a side. Mitchell has deposited $500
forfeit.
! Information from the Texas border in
dicates carelessness or misunderstanding
on the part of cattle inspectors, several
Texas herds having been admitted to the
territory of New Mexico, which, although
free from the fever, have left a poisoned
trail that has developed fever in the native
herds.
I Says a Louisville, Ky., diapatch: Kubels
Rock, a dangerous formation on the Ohio,
at the falls, was blasted by the government
employees recently. Almost every steamer
afloat on the Ohio has suffered from the
rock. Boats scrape the bottom and dis
joint their hulls against the treacherous
ledges.
i The wife of Joseph Shirley, residing
near Letart, W. Va., was instantly killed
last week by lightning. She was sitting
in her room with one of her little girls
when the bolt descended by the side of the
chimney, it being an inside one, and came
into the room with the above result. The
little girl was badly stunned, but will re
cover. I The Secretary of the Navy has issued a
general order for the establishment of a
college for an advanced course of profes
sional study for naval officers, to be known
as the Naval War College. It will be under
the general supervision f the Bureau of
Navigation. The principal building on
Coasters' Harbor Island, R. I., will be as
signed to its use.
! A Des Moines, la., dispatch says: The
jury in the case of Mrs. Rachael Huff vs.
Aulman & Schuster, brewers, last week
gave the plaintiff a verdict for $1,500.
Last winter her husband got drunk at the
brewery and on his way home fell off the
bridge on the ice and was killed. The ver
dict was $1,300 actual and $200 exemplary
damages and costs.
I Two children of Garrett Wiseman, aged
8 and 6 years respectively, living in Mitch
ell county, N. C, while passing through a
long strip of woods recently were attacked
by a large catamount. The ferocious ani
mal buried his claws in the younger girl's
throat, instantly killing her. The older
sister attempted to escape, but was pur
sued and so terribly lacerated that she
died in a few hours after.
: E. W. Cole, the Tennessee railroad king,
has purchased the fine blue grass farm
known as Terrass Place, and presented it
to the state to build a house of refuge for
boys and girls. He is regarded as a great
benefactor, as there has never been any
thing of the kind in the state, juvenile cul
prits always having been sent to the peni
tentiary, where they were brutally treated
and demoralized by the elder criminals.

BARLEY The vagaries of call trading
sadly upset values in the sample market.
Holders of Feed are anxious to realize the
full figure of the day, and as $1.03 ctl
was bid at the call session for any part of
a thousand tons, seller 1884 delivery, it
would seem reasonable to suppose that, if
wholesale lots were worth such a price,
certainly retail parcels as exhibited on the
tables ought to bring at least $1 ctl.
Yet dealers quote No. 1 Feed at 92i95c,
claiming that buyers will not give more.
Brewing is moderatively active and steady
at a range of S5c$1.10 ctl. In Cheva
lier there is no movement of consequence,
while prices are undisturbed, ranging from
$1.15 to $1.50 $ ctl, according to quality.

WHEAT The situation does not look
well for sellers. It was not expected that
the month of October would pass through
without some change for the hotter at for
eign centers, but this hope has not been
realized. In fact, the spot market at Liv
erpool was reported lower last week than
at any time previously this year, and the
present season has been a pretty low one
for values. Shippers are not disposed to
oav more than 81.22 & ctl for the best No.
1 grades, though perhaps a fancy lot might
bring $1,523. Millers will pay $l.Z5(fl3l.za,
but beyond the latter figures they decline
to purchase. Closing prices were:

OATS The market is steady at our quo
tations. Late arrivals of Washington
Territory have been placed at from $1.05
to $1.16. The best lot of these Oats would
class as No. 1 grade, but they cannot pass
official inspection on account of damp con
dition. We quote: Surprise and milling. $1.40
