While, the countv has virtually accepted the bridge it has kept back pix hundred dollars of the contract Irice to insure the completion of the bridge in this particular. The bridge company contracted for the iron in New York which was shipped by th way of the Northern Pacific more than a month ago but owing to delay in freights has not yet arrived. This fact necessarily causes a delay in opening the bridge to the public travel as is would le bad policy for the countv tc attempt to use the biidge before it is entirely completed and turned over by the company. In a countrv like tlr's, w here the rain 1s liable to come at any time, one woifd s ippose that it would pay farmers to stack their grain the same as they do east of the Rocky mountains, aad not leave their wheat and oats standing in the shock for three or four weeks wait ing for the threshing machine to ctrue around. Ye have leceived a neatly printed pamphlet concerning the "Lane Countv Fair" to be held a, Eugene City, for three days commencing September 25th. Many valuable premiums are offered, the society is to be kept free from debt and tho farmers are urged to take a lively interest. It appears queer to r.s that Douglas county has never had enterprise enough to have a Counfy r air. The public has a strangely short mem ory. A man must keep his business constantly before the puhlic in order to I - succeed. A few dollars invested in ju- dicious advertising is the best invest ment that can le made. Enormous fortunes have been amassed by those who advertise largely and incessantly, and all who have had experience in the matter will confirm the statement that ! the latter is the one great point. The! best and cheapest means of keeping a business before the public is through the columns of your county paper. The only official acts of Governor Cleveland, which the Republican news papers have been able to find fault with are bis vetoes of the five cent fare bill on the elevated rail reads of the city of New York and the Mechanics Lien law. The Gvecent fare bill was a job gotten up in the interest of the Astors, who own a large amount of real prop erty in the suburbs of the city. The constitutional objections contained in , the veto are a 'sufficient answer to the job contained in the bill even if the ulterior cljccts of its authors had not been known. The Mechanics Lien law which he vetoed was a scheme devised by some hungry lawyers to create liti gation, and the lien law in force for many years in tho State cf New Yrork which it was intended to repeal affords !all tLis week, a pleasing gentlemau more perfect security to the mechanics ind a number one salesman than the one proposed. Tako Cleveland He fills the bill and with him pence, happiness and good will to all mankind will come! C. C. Haley traveling for Crocker & S Co. of San Francisco ruade us a ideasant Correspondence. Editor Independent: Now that the country is agitated over political matters and the time is uearat hand when this pending issue will be acted upon, we think it necessary to awaken some of our political stalwarts of tho dutie3 they owe their party. It is well known that all modes of proceed ure are adopted to defeat certain candidates ia the pending struggle, aud the voter should understand the trick3 that are played to mislead hira. It is a well known fact that the so called prohibitionists are making quite a struggle to assist their cand idate and all the the temperance lodg- s in the country are usin& every endeavor to farther their , ends. Such an institution exists in this place and the members of this lodge or a majority cf them are prominent Republi cans and Democrats and their assistance i needed by their parties. But the lodge here cou tains ten Republicans and fourteen Dem ocrats who liay taken solemn obligations to support aud maintain the cause of temper ance. We strongly l ellcve in temperance aud are willing to Sacrifice more in promo ting that cause than ia any ether issue now existing, but when it ccmes to making the temperance question a political isrue we sol e nidy -hid earnestly protest. We are sur prised to know that a certain number of this po'itice-tempwance alliance, who pre tsiid to be moral and who attempt to teach the unjust how to liva as christians, and at the c'.ose of existence, to di as saints, have taken the stand they now occupy, and make a political matter out of aa issue that is no mora entitled to such a position than re ligion. Why do not not these supcramiated moral people-start a fight against the accu mulatations of industry? By so doing, they could prevent the ravages of thieve3 aud robbers, as those individuals appropriate to themselves that which the thrifty save by their industry. Industry causes accumula tion. Accumulation is property. Property 's a temptation to the tlikf. Why do they not organize against accumulation a;ji tclj people not to be economical, a3 being so, they offer temptation to the thiefand robber? The political mernbt rs of this lodge must know that they are under obligations to support St. John, the temperance candidate, for President, and if they fail to do so, they have violated an obligation which they have mads that is as sacred as Holy Writ. We aak all the faithful t think over this subject and stay with and protect yc-ui alma mater in times of distress. Sknsosv. Oakland, Sept. 10th, 1834.'
