foundland, last week, and all hands per

cester. Sir Julis Benedict, the eminent com
poser of London, has virtually decided to
visit the United States next fall and lec
ture upon his half century of musical ex
perieace. Crown Solicitor Bolton, of Dublin, has
brought suit in the sum of 30,000 against
William O'Brien, M. P., editor of the
United Ireland, for libel and defamation
of character.
The train from Salisbury to London was
precipitated down an embankment last
week, at a point between Creamore and
Rownton. Five persons were killed and
thirty injured.
A London cablegram says: Earl Gran
ville is preparing a note to Washington,
in relation to the collection of conspiracy
funds within the jurisdiction of the

The Supreme Court of Germany has de

The Belgian government has made at
tendance at the public schools- obligatory
upon children between the ages of 6 and

It is now given out in English govern
ment circles that the failure of the nego
tiations with Turkey for aid in the Soudan
difficulty was due not to dissentions in

Five seamen of the sealing brig Confed
erate, now hemmed in by ice in Notre
Dame Bay, reached St. Johns, N. F., re-
cently, praying that aidi be sent to the
famishing crew on board, numbering seventy-four.
They have no fuel, all the pro
visions except a little bread have been de
voured, and the craft is surrounded by an
ocean of ice as far as the eye can reach.
John O'Connor Power, the renegade
member of parliament for Mayo county,
Ireland, arrived at Castlebar, the capital
of that countr. last week. Most of his
constituents are desperately exasperated
over his desertion from the Parnellite
ranks to these of the Liberals, and they
have made preparations for giving him a
very warm reception if he ventures to
speak in public anywhere in his county.

The New York Herald savs: Wall street
was flurried last week over Jay Gould's
financiering in Texas Pacific. It turns out
that instead of that company paying the
interest as advertised, Gould paid the ad
vance money to buy the coupons.
In the House recently a vote was taken
on the California and Oregon land grant
forfeiture bill, with the result of 14a yeas
and 6 nays. No quorum. A call of the
House disclosed the presence of 210 mem
bers, and the bill was passed yeas 159,
nays 10.
Lieutenant Rye, quartermaster United
States army, walked off a train in motion
near Mexico, Mo., one night last week,
and was instantly killed. lie was en route
to Chicaaco, and was in his night clothes
when found. It is supposed he was a
somnambulist.
The greatest mileage made by a passen
ger locomotive on the Pennsylvania

The New York Times says: Leading
wholesale druggists who agreed some
time ago that they would not sell drugs,
medicines or proprietary medicines to re
tail dealers in New York and Brooklyn
that cut rates, have canceled their agree
ment, and they sell now to all customers
as before the combination.
A special from Hammonton, N. J., gives
Miss Nevison's defense against the charge
of cruelty, resulting in the death of twenty-two
infants under her charge. She al
leges that the measles hroke out among
them, followed by pneumonia. A later ac
count says it has been found that three
fourths of the dead infantsjwere the illegi
timate offsprings of wealthy Philadelphia
and New York people.

to be a good demand for wheat bags. We
quote Calcutta, 22x26, standard quality,
at 77c for spot or June delivery. Wool
bags are nominal at 3639c; potato gun

BARLEY Although there is no very
general or pronounced demand, the feel
is a shade stronger than at the close of
last week. Offerings are comparatively
free, but there is no pressure to sell, while
holders are quite firm in asking rates.
Some fairly good feed, rather light, sold
by sample at 82c, but for anything choice
85c $ ctl was the ruling figure. For a par
cel of good No. 2 quality, an offer offer f

movement is moderately steady, and fair
