the ratification of the treaty entered into
between the United States and Mexico.
To make this treaty effectual legislation is
required by Congress, and a bill will be in
troduced in the House as soon as the offi
cial notification of the ratification of the
treaty is received by the President.
In the Commons recently the bill amend
ing the Irish laborers act of 1883 was re
jected, 138 to 75. Parnell complained of
the opposition offered by Trevelyn, chief
secretary for Ireland, lie said the govern
ment must not find fault if it meets with
retaliation. He asked if the government
meant to wait until the laborers burn the
houses over the heads of dissenting land
lords.
A quarrel between "Plunger" Walton

ter. Mr. Walton got angry and finally

Vanderbilt's fellow passengers who
went up from Liverpool to London on the
train with him, have a wild theory that he
engineered the whole panic, and timed his
departure from New York very skillfully,
so that his hand might not be seen in the
transaction. In support of this theory
they say that he received a deluge of cable
grams on the arrival of the Baltic at
Queenstown, and that he smiled very sig
nificantly as he leisurely read the dispatches.

across the continent was about 7 cents.
News was last week received from Eliz
abeth town, 111., that the Harden county
court-house, with all its records, had been
consumed by n incendiary fire. There has
been a band of semi-lawless men in that
county for several years, and it is the gen
eral belief that the court-house was fired
by them for the purpose of destroying the
records of indictments against them.

gardmg the difficulty.
"Consulted themJ well I should say
did. Some told me I had neuralgia; oth
ers that l had inflammatory rheumatism
for which there was no cure, that I would
be atflicted all my life, and that time alone
would mitigate my sufferings.
"But didn't thev try to relieve your mis

"Yes, they vomited and phvsiced me
blistered and bled me, plastered and oiled
me, sweat, steamed and everything but
froze me, but without avail."
"But how did you finally recover?"
"I had a friend living in Michigan who
had been afflicted in a similar way and
had been cured. He wrote me regarding
his recovery and advised me to try the

standing the power and the influence of
the lobby, but few of these vicious meas
ures pass. ,Were they successful it would
be a sad commentary upon our system of
government, and would virtually annihil
ate one branch of it. The great majority
of them are either reported adversely or
smothered in committee by the watchful
ness or loyalty of our congressmen."
