HUBBAEB FARMERS, LOOK! P. P. Creek Mills! FOR THE BEST WIARIXQ '-Stan. SATURDAY, -JULY 7, 1883. T HE INDEPENDENT. TUTT S fob Heartless Triads. The crash ef the Freedman's Sayings Bank, Washington, D. C. , is attended with sadder consequences than usually come from the collapse ef these eften soulless corporations. Not that all the trust funds deposited were swal lowed, but because the majority of the depositors were needy, ignorant col oreu peopia. Hj a zertuitous rise in some of the bank's real estate tt was enabled, notwithstanding its stealings whicli appear in recent fortunes for its managers, to pay 33 cents on the dol lar. The bold stage robber is a prince in comparison with such cruel and cow ardly rogues. Among the many radi cal reforms indispensable in the "best some scheme br which sarins banks may be made honest institutions. In seme of the States of the Union arson is punishable by death. The law is wholesome, for a scoundrel who sets to a house is a diabolical, cold blooded villian, who for plunder or spite destroys property or endangers life. The fraudulent bank man is guilty of the same crime only on a larger scale: besides the loss and di tress of others all go to add to his lucre and increase the comforts of his luxurious living. If the men who wrecked the Freed man's Bank could hare seen the poor, needy people, whose little earnings they had pilfered, wandering about the burst depository until worn out and discouraged, day after day, for two weeks, patiently waiting to get what had been left for them out of the rob bery, they would have been moved by the spectacle if their hearts are net of Hint Few ef the poor colored people received more than $10 or $12 and many got a balance of only a fe cents. "1 had $70," said an old aunty, "and r I 'spected that it was safer in the bank than for me to keep i I had saved that by a few pennies at a time from a geod whilo before the war. Thank tne ijora, x says, tnat x can get so much of it back again." a f M w m isoss, saw an aged colored man. 'I know'd I d have the rheumatiz when I got old, and I saved $300, When the bank was begun I knew'd me of the gem men so well that I put it all in. But the eld mas won't get but plaguey little more'n half of it out gain." A Thif d Party. Politicians who are now skirmishing for a third party for the Fresidentia contest, says the New York Sun, have probibly forgotten the complexion f the present House of Representatives, which would elect a President in case of a failure at the ballot box. In sach a contingency the vote is taken by States, the majority of a delegation controlling the State. These States are Democratic: Ala bama, Arkansas, California, Connecti cut, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Ken tucky, Leuwiana, 2Iarylndt Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Ycrk, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennesee, Texas, West Vi-. ginia and Wisconsin 22. These States are Republican: Colo, fade, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hamshire, Npw Jersey, Oregoni Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia 15. ' Florida, divided 1. The most neticeable fact in this record is that the Democratic States include every part of the Union, and all iti ex t re Dies, North and South, East and West This is the first time since the civil war when the strength of that party has been distributed over se vast an aiea. California, Conaeetieat, In diana, Michigan, Nevada, New York, Ohio and Wisconsin speak for the North. The old sectional lines are jfone. "Ssnator Edm jxds would make an x celleut standard-bearer for our party next year," is a remark that f requentlj drops from the lips of interviewed Re publican politicians. But these gen tleman know very well' that, even if there were any probability -of the nom ination geing to Vermont, Senator Ed munds could not be induced to accept it under existing circumstances. It b not at all unlikely that Mr. Edmunds would like to be President possibly he "would rather be right than be President," but he is not so self-distrusting as to be capable of believing that he might be Wli, if the condition were favorable. As the case stands however, the nominatioa u not such a prize a to tempt the distinguished Vermenter's ambition. He ia toe lhrewd a px?liciaa to iook with any confidence for success to his party next year; and quite too sensible to wish to U"Own his record with defeat SYMPTOMS OF A i SriK lial v ibrae Tjosh of Appetite.
