The leading Republican papers of the East have started the slogan that the Democratic newspapers of the country are about to ruin their party by forcing the issue of a tariff for rev- enue only. The little fry of this coast have taken up the cry and tho feeling which they seem to manifest for the de plorable situation that issue will place our party in, would lead one to think that this time they are cherishing an unalloyed amount of filial love for the giand old party. We remember that in 1876 the Democratic party gained a splendid victory when an emphatic declaration on this question formed a most con spicuous part of their platform, and was endorsed by an overwhelming ma jority of the legal votei-s of the entire country; tnat it was the paramount is sue in all those States where the De mocracy made the most unprecedented gains, in the last October and Novem ber elections. Persons desiring to settle here are compelled to boavd their fam ilies at the hotels until houses can be built, or go elsewhere. J The company having definitely fixed this as the end of the first division of their road, and now are about to erect their round-house and machine shops here, it will prove of far more and in calculable value to us as a city, when the road is completed, than the honor of being simply the termiuus of the lino.
