Newspaper Page TextTHE INDEPENDENT. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10TH, 1883. A Steamer Wrecked- The steamer Tacorua went ashore Monday night, the 29th of January, four miles north of tha mouth of tho TJmpqua river, and ten of her crew were lost The Tacoma is a large 3000 ton steamer and was built in Philadelphia far the Central Pacific railroad cooopa. xj and cost $250,000. She sailed from New Tacoma on Saturday, the 27 th of J anuary, for San Francisco, Jaden with 3,700 tons of coal. Capt. Kortz, the master of the vessel, some- bow lost ma reckoning and at noon Monday stated that they were 25 miles from shore. At 9 m. vhe vessel stranded in 18 or 20 feet of water, about of a mile from the main land. The second mate was en watch at the ime the ship struck but did not see of hear the breakers. A heavy sea was rolling at the time and the vessel broke amidsaip. The passonget-a and crew were on the wreck for fotcy-eight hours. Tuesday, morning Captain Korts landed ou th beach to go for Assistance. He got the tug Sol. Thom as, at Umpqua river, tp go to the wreck, but could not get to the vessel. Captain Korts and men made every effort Tuesday afternoon to return to the wreck, but the heavy sea on the beach prevented them doing so. On Wednesday t'ia boat sitcc eled in getting to the ship, and when Mr. Wells left all but seventeen had been Janded. A dispatch from Empire City dated February 3d, says: The steam tug Fearless has arrived from the wreck of the Tacoma. Nine of the crew were lost, and First Assistant Engineer Grant died after getting ashore. Tho fiaip is completely broken up. Noth fig can be saved from tho wreck. Five bodies were recovered, and will be buried to-day. Engineer Grant was buried yesterday. . " Nothing can be seen the wreck but the top of the cylinder , at low water. Seven men were lost off tho fore yard when the mast went overboard. Captain Hill, of tho steam tug Fear less, reports that he, with' the tug, lay in twenty-eight feet of water and eould hear the men on the ship calling to them, but could not tender them any assistance, us they had no boat that could live in such a sea as was running at that time. He saw a boat put off from the beach, but it was capsized be fore it got to the wreck and after being washed to the shere they righted tl.e boat and made the attempt a second time, with like result The sea was so heavy that ho boat such as was there could do any good. Captain Hill saw ve men, on he fore yard. The names pf the boat's crew that did such heroic deeds in trying to save the men on the Wreck were Breckman; Dexter, Par- eons, Breen, and one of the ship's crew and they deserve great credit for their heroic efforts to save life under the ad verse circumstances in which they werC placed by not having a boat that was suitable for such work in such a sea as was running at the time. As Captain Hill ceuld do nothing to render any as sistance with the tug he then vent into the Umpqua river: and on the next morning he started to go to the life saving station at Cape Gregory for the life-boat and the gun for throwing lines on board the wreck; but when he got out of the Umpqua river and in sight of the wreck, Jbe foremast on the Ta coma, with the men on the for yard had gone overboard and all were lost. As there .was nothing more tp be done he returned to the Umpqua river and eame here this morning. The tug Sol. Thomas will bring Captain Kortz n.d crew here Jornorrow. The wreck will be sold to-day. INHUMAN LIFE STATION KEEPER,, A.a Empire pity dispatch" of February 3rd sayst On. Wednesday afternoon when the first news of the wreck of the Tacoma was received here, requiring assistance of the life-boat tP rescue the men then on the wreck, a crew of eight men volunteered their services and pre ceeded that nightafter dark, to the life saving station at Cape Gregory, a dis tance from here of about nine mile.", whore they arrived 'at about eleven o'clock that night and informed the keeper of the slatiorr of the wreck that they came ag a volunteer crew; that the steam tug Escort No. 2 would be off the station at daylight to take them to the wreck, and they were under the direc tion of the said keeper of the life station. They proceeded tp put the boat in con dition for the trip and launched her, and with the keeper in charge, went about two f?$es to sea, to practice thecrew in pullinsj the boat, and thn pu(led the boat back to tho station; and when a thor-t time after, the tug Escort arrived off the station to take them to the wreck, the keeper of the station retused to go or allow the men to take the boat, fhvje ef tho men then get a small boat from the lighthouse keeper and went off fco the tug Escort, and informed Captain Magee that the keeper would not 'jo, or let the boat go. His oaly excuse for such conduct was that he would not go without an experienced crew. As toe tug wouiu not oe auie to render any assistance without the lifeboat, Captain Magee came back to Empire. Captain Hill, of the tug Fearless, re turned from the wreck to-dav. He thinks that if the lifeboat and the gun for throwing lines had been at the place on tne dav tbat tne volunteer crew went to the station for the boat, a'l those lost on the ill-fated Tacoma would have been paved. There is no apparent reaf on why, German, who as a class arejwealthier and more prosperous than the: Irish, should so largely exceed the latter in suicides, unless it be the na-' tional temperament. The Irish show a less number ot suicides, in projwrtien to their population, than any other foreign born inhabitants. The number of males who committed suicide during the past eleyen years was 1193, while the number of females was 328. i . -. Washington society is just now giv ing a good deal of attention to the President and Miss Bepk with.. Last summer it was reported he was engaged to j Mrs. Wadsworth. He certaiuly paid her a great deat of attention and robbed tho hot house of the executi ve mansion of its choicest , buds and blos soms in order to furnish boquets to that charming widow. Mrs. Wads worth is now in Europe and rumors are busy with the name of Miss Beck with. She is now at the Arlington house with her mother. She is a New York lady, about 26 years. of age, and is not only 'beautiful but i has many graces of figure and mind, j The Presi dent has given several very nice little dinners at the White house; in her hon or,! and her table at the Arlington is all th while decorated with the choicest flowers of the White house conserva tory. To-day the President organized a little party for her benefit, to make a visit to Mount Vernon. The govern ment boat Dispatch was used to con-vep- them to the tomb of the father of of (his country. Aneminint society lady a day or so ago remarked tbat the President was a great flirt, but she probably only means that he has tho good taste to like the society of pretty and accomplished women. s PE0M CLEVELAND. Such persons would be comforted if they would read thrt from fifteen to forty degrees below zero reports which are continually ar riving from the east. Yes, Oregon has the. best climate after all The inhabitants of Coles valley have been very healthy during the winter, witli few exceptions. Mr. Chas. O Criiteser, who has been confined to his bed for some time on account of sick ness is now rapidly recovering. Mr. Wash. Ward is visiting with his brother in French Settlement M Ward resides in the Yaquina Bav coun try and tpeaks in glowing terms of that part of Oregon. Prof. J ohn Day, of Hosebui g, has during the winter delivered several en tertaining lecture at the French Set tlement school house. On Sunday last he gave an interesting lecture on the "Life and Growth of Language," which wasi highly spoken of by all who heard it.
