The Coos Bay Wagon Road. Joh n Haley, Superintendent of the various stage lines of the well known firm of Salisbury, Haley Co., for carrying the United States mailt, ws iu town last week. Their com pan. having se cured the route from Koelurg to Coos Bay, "Mr. Haley negotiate! with the Coos Bay Wagon Road Company for the old toll road, which was washed away by the heavy rains some years ago and has leeu impassable ever since. He started out with a large force the first of this week,1 to put the road in repair and will, within forty days from this time, have hacks for the accoin nutdatiou of the public, running the entire dirt i nee from here to Coos Bay. The ope'iin? of this road will prove a blessing to the (eope of the Coquelle, . who. have been virtually blockaded for the last two or three year, unless the rate of tolls should be sol high as to preclude travel. . A Reporter who Sat on his Thumb. While meandering through the cow paths in the tar-weed conquered streets of Roseburg, our attention was attract ed by what at tint appeared to be a mule's roach, just under the head of a weed which towered skyward some two feet into the ciicuuijacent atmosphere. Upon examination we discovered that what had appeared to us to be a mule's roach was only the shaggy mane of an indignant "Oregon?an"reofter, bathed in to-tacco juice and team, sitting on his thumb And bewailing the Cailif of Bagdaddy degeneracy of the times. He was evidently a pink of perfection in politeness, and a daisy cutter of aestliet icism, for he was blushing with shame at the indignity which he had eeu compelled to impose upon his thumb, and he was evidently Kung in a style mote elaborate and diificult than ele gant, for some purpose, which we after ward discovered to be that he might the more acceptably and earnestly apostrophize Rosenurg, which he seemed to imagine had turned over rnd folded its hands; We might remark, in parenthesis, that he is not the first fnart who has posed, on tbe streets of Roseburg, laioring under the delus:on that everything was wrong side and plodding the wrong way. Havinar procured a microscope, the lietter to examine this "animal," and having dis covered sympathy, encouragement an' opportunity in tl e features present, we mentally apostrophized: "Oh 'Ore gonian' rejiorter, 'Qregonian' rejiorter, wealthy, learned, humble, lowly, radi cal 'Oregonian' rejwrter! Thou art ahead of thy times just one hundred years, and hast lost thy reckoning just on hundred a.d eighty degrees, and art off thy nut irretrievably, I nit still thou art the conderaed and simmered quintessence of courtesy and amenity. Get off of thy thumb and take our hat. Considering thespark of civilisation that yet flickeis in ltoseburg's bosom,' let her flicker, but her moral atmos phere will never annihilate thy energy, nor smother thy intellect, for wwe men agree that it is impossible by any known means to reduce nothing to nothing. We do not believe that thou art a 'poisenous vapor,' nor that the city 'fathers are nursing thee. We admit that a speck of 'blight rests upon Rose burg;' we have discovered it by its va- poring, but unconscious, innocent, energy-annihilating,' intellectual-effort-smotherinfc, retrograding Roselmrg, doe not know the vast power which the speck affects, j Leave us, 0 Orego ; nian' reporter! O blight! Return not to thy delightful pastime of perching upon thy rejiortorial thumb, and tear ing the Wards' of poor little Roseburg. V WILBUR ITEMS.. . Thinking that possibly not all of the many readers of the Independent have had the pleasure of visiting this pleaa aut little village, and that a sort of descriptive letter might not be alto gether uninteresting, your corres;ond ent has taken upon himself the pleas ant task of writing such a letter. To the stranger who for the first time steps from the car at the station, Wilbur appears to be a very iusigniti cant village, but after an hour of ex ploration he discovers that no small part of our little hurgh is hidden cosily away in tbe shadows of a beautiful grove of. black and white-oak trees, forming that portion which is face tiously known to the inhabitants of the other end of the village, as Sodom, and they in trrn receive the sobrie-.iet Gomorrah. The latter in the bunness portion, and consists ot a general mer chandise stoie, conducted by Me gi-a. Grubbe Si Chapman, than whom ih ie are no mure honorable, square tl a ng merchants in Douglas county, a wagon and blacksmith shop, owned by Mr. John Lawton; a good hotel, kept by that U known and genial host, F. R. Hill; threa warehouses, a carpenter and undertaking establishment, a drug store and a few residences. Jt is worth y of mention that in tbe foregoing enu luerutiou the word saloon does ..ot ap jiear, and it is also worthy of mention that there i? not a place nearer tha.i Oakland or Roseburg where a drop of liquor of any kind can be purchased. The other portion of the village con sists of the academy, a large two-story building, well furnished, and ret deuces. During the past year Mr. B. J. Grubbe has built an elegant resi dence in the grove, which he is still im proving, and which would Ihj no dis credit to a more pretentious village. Mr. Lawson has also built aud hiiisiieu a neat cottage u:U is now mniuin nice story and a half house, both ot which are ir. leaded to be 1 -t to fami lies coming hire for educational advan tages. Within the pest three months several large families have settled here, among which may lie named Mr. Da vis, James Sutherlin and Mr. James Darrow. Others are simply awaiting the completion of suitable residences. The chief attractions which Wilbur boasts, are a freedom from immoral surroundings, a soler, upright and in dustrious class of citizens, and. a first class academr. Of the latter it may be setViy slid that no school of tbe kind in Douglas county has bail an etpiallv rapid growth iu the same length ot time. A little over two years ago the Bcnsou brothers took charge of it, opening their Fall term with otilv fif teen pup. Is. During the past year they enrolled 130, and the prospect is good for enrolling more than 150 dur ing the coming vear, boarding facilities being abundant and cheap. The faculty of the bcmuoI have purchased a new piano and have engaged the services of Miss Helena Holman, of Portland, as teacher of instrumental music, a de partment which has recently been re ceiving special attention. But I find that I am occupying too much space and will close this article with an inci dent which occurred last week. A gentleman who, wih his family, bad just arrived trom Kansas, drove up to the village store and remarked to Mr. Grubbe that he was looking for a place to settle and make bim a home, that a few miles back he had heard of a small town where no grog shops were permitted, and there he wished to abide. He is new here, busy at ork with his team in tbe harvest field. In conclusion we will say that if the citizens of other places could n.uter the same moral power, Iowa's prohibition law would be superfluous. Observer. NEWS ITEMS. On Saturday, the 12th D. C. Morris stabbed and killed Sterling P. Officer, a young man 20 years of age, near Mo lalla, Clackamas countv. The coro ner's jury returned a verdict that tbe killing was felonious." Tuesday, the 15th, an unknown as sas'n fired three shots and struck and killed Mrs. Mary Petch, an old lady of forty, as 6h was driving along the road in Moore's valley, in company with her son, a yeung man sixteen years of age. Mrs. Patch was struck near the shoulders or neck and fell from the wagon -dead. The horses took fright and ran some distance, but the joung man succeeded in checking them and returned to the lifeless body of his mother, which he conveyed to their home: - Tuesday, the 15th an Italian by the name of E. M. Giannini, shot aud kiMed Georgia Ricco, an Italian in his employ, near Cape Horn, on the Co lumbia river, tn Skamania county, W. T., and hid the body. He was arrest ed in Portland on suspicion and .con fessed the killing, but claimed that he did it in se'-f -defence. Friday, the 18th, Guss Allen was shot by a soldier, in a drunken row in Walla Walla, and fatally wounded, the ball striking near the navel Ser. gcant Dunwoody was shot in the hand at the same time, by a man named Harry Nesbit, and badly hurt. Saturday, the 19th, John Crawford, a young man of 24 years of age, went into a field belonging to John Good win, near Dayton, W. T., to look for -some - horses, and was shortly after wards found with his forehead broken in. He was probably thrown and kicked by the horse he was riding. B. B. Redding. Land Commissioner of the Central Pacific Railroad Com pany, an old pioneer of this coast, died in San Francisco, on the 21st LLE. The new town ol RiddlevUle Is utu ated on the line of I he railroad through Cow creek canyon, about eight miles from Canyon villa, w itch is ujwn the old stage road. It is the centre of the large agricultural district known as the1 Cow creek valley, and will hereafter be the depot for al that section of country lying near anyonviue, ana t cannot fail to be a rilace of importance ) in the near future At present the town conrists of a hotel, kept by Bous Riddle, where every accommodation for man and beast Will be found, on the old-fashioned style; a grocery store aud one of general merchandise; a fur niture store, conducted by our old friend Frazier; also 'two saloons, one conducted by Roliert McCullough, who eveiybody knows, and the other by a person we do not kuo'. There are already three family resi dences, and Mr. Abraham kC. have built a warehouse at this placr and th Railroad Company hive located the de pot and turn table, which will be fin ished by the time the track is laid to that place. The whole will be com pleted in about two weeks. "New Mill. Tie old flouring mill, formerly owned by the late Mike Eb erlein, and purchaseVF' by Mr. Lincoln, has been entirely refitted by the iiew proprietor, and is now prepared to run with or set of burrs. When the mill is finally completed there will be two sets of flouring burrs and one for chop ping. The mili is now running and has all the iat-.st improvements for pro ducing the most and best flour from th grain. It Iras a Barnard & Co. clean er, new flour chest and an improved bolting chest with a return, and alarg quantity of the best of genuine Ancht t.rand bolting cloth, which secures the b-Mt quality of Hour. A new watei wheel has been put in to answer the in ceas-il demand fur power. Mr. Lin coin has been fortunate in securing th services of the well known millwright, I D. W. Ransom, whose wrk is alva.s a guarantee of success. The whole work will be completed in about .two weeks, when the old South Umpqna Mill will be one of the best in the State for its capacity. Died.
