THE. INDEPENDENT. ROSEBURG. SATURDAY. JULY 29. THE PEOPLE'S CAUSE. The issue in California to-Jay j ia clear-cut and well define!. The battle of the people against corjKrate pewer has been, declared. The Democracy under the leadership of Gen. Stoneman has ablj espoused the cause of the people, The Republican party with its well-known affinity for wealth and cor ruption will champion the cause of the corporations. "We shall see what we ehall see 1 Ho political contest frr years will be watched with so much interest as the conflict in our neighboring j state. Blessed as she has been by gold fields unsurpassed, by a delicious and health giving climate, by grand ami awe inspiring scenery, by a most fertile noil and men of push , energy and nerve, California to-day should be the most prosperous, thriving and advancing etate in the Union. Th it she is not is due to the methods, the corruption and the villiany of the Republican jarty. That party brought ujon her the curse of Monjjolianism and cheap labor; it cursed her with Sir Claiis jHpecklesand his sugar monoo'y; it cursed her with- railroad legislation that to-day makes the Central Pacific railroad the despot of her borders; and it has driven from bar territory the wtrkingmen and made of those that remain outcasts and political agitator, wrho are compelled to cry aloud from th 3 sand-lots. The blighting influence of the Republican party will never be irradicated from the political system of California. The ; Demooratiq party has now come to the front to do battle for justice for the workingman and to control and contract c rporate influence. It has all to fight. We predict that if Gen? Stoneman is ebcted Governor jthat it will bring an era of prosprity and happiness hitherto unknown. The Central Pacific will be forced to let go her hold cn the throat of the people; and it will be that entering wedge that will show to the people, the oppressed people of America that they have rights which railroad magnates must respect But )e Democracy has much tu contend against. Money wilt fle like Tater. The Republican party and the corporations will light with tba desperation born of despair. The psople will be lulled into security by pledges which are made but to be broken. Every littlo pettv post, master and Federal official will have to .come down with his twenty per cent of hia salary to aid the cause that gives him bread and butter. The corpora tions will bleed freely. There will be no end to the means used te cerrupt and debauch the voter. It is the peo ples fight though, they must rise nltove party ties, above all personal prejudices And above -' everything except the knowledge of the fact that they are fighting for justice, liberty and life. We have not yet lost fa'th in th American ' people, but our faith for the future advancement of our country will be rudely shocked unless the Democracy carries California. .Something new in Dot's 'Stripes and combination fu Hp, J net received at pioed's. 1 , ., ; Aij Extraordinary Offer. Address. KJQ.MCR AAfty)? ACTjriiG Co. J S . . i Jl8 SnUlleM Street Pitm'rb, J a THE SITUATION IN PENN SYLVANIA The disaflcction of the Republicans in Pennsylvania, threatens to be more serious tojtheir erganization than was at first anticipated by their bosses. With the ovei throw of the Cameron Dynasty iu that State will follow the speedy disembarkuient of the Repub. lican party. Democratic triumph in Pennsylvania at this time means a Waterloo defeat to the Republicans in 1884. Strange as it may appear no person has ever served as President who failed to get a majority of the electoral votes of the Keystone State A defeat of the Republican ticket at this time with the existing breach among their leader?, and the tendency to break from party allegience, that is their manifest, and the increasing dis regard of tho esple for bossisnj will so completely overthrow the organiza tion within that commonwealth that it will be impossible for the Cameron faction, with all their, wealth and in fluence, backed ss they are by tho United States Treasury to rally their clans successfully for the Presidential. Campagn of 1884. So much import ance is attached to this fact by the moneyed power, who own and control the -organization which administers the Government, that since their failure o placate the disaffected lenders, who have set up an Independent ticket in opon hostility to the regular organiza tion, that they are concentrating the influence of the entire paity within that State with a purpose and design by corrupt practices and open defiance ot law to defeat and overwhelm the Democratic party, and smt other and crush out the disaffected organization within their own ranks. On the other hand the Democracy have placed in the field a strong ticket composed of men of known probriety, in whom the great latoring masses of the people have confidence, and whose only weakness is that they will be opposed by the gigantic corjiovatious with which that commonwealth is envroned who want no parson in power except those whom they can control, whilst the half-breads or Independents present a bold front and refuse any overtures which the Stalwarts are willing to conceed. The situation becomes more perplexing to the Machine Manager', and they re don b'e their exertion to avert the landing danger to their corrupt exist ance, and secure for themselves a longer lease of power and plunder. To what extent they wiil go to hold fast to the public patronage remains to be seen. That they will not stop sho t short of bribery, perjury and corrup tion, to carry their ends, will not be questioned by any reader ef history who recalled, how tho old Grant ring in 1872, after the registry law, went into force in that state,, voted through their repeaters -and strikers over seven thousand tombstone inscrip' lions in the City of Philadelphia alone, many of the petson who voted by their repeaters on these false certifi. cates of registration, had been hurried for more than a generation. As the time for the election approaches and the canvas waxes warmer and it be comes evident that those who have grown rich, through unjust legislation will resort te desperate means to retain the power on which they have fattene !, and if enough of the profligate class who lounge about, without any calling or politics, who are ever ready to sell for a few dollars, can be found in the ni'iuerons cities, towns and villages within that commonwealth, to over ride the will of the industrious and working class, the means will be at hand t command a solid phalanx of phiu army of profligates, and the iron bands of arrogance and oppression, will become more firmly rivited upon the lal'or of that State. But if we read the signs of the times aright boss ism is At an end, and the power which has hold of the laboring people of that State in the iron grasp of oppression must succumb to justice and equality before the law, and with a return to peace, plenty, prosperity and quietude within that commonwealth where cap ital will respect and reward labor and labor wiil appreciate capital, and the day for strikes . will have passed for ever.
