COIf.1 THE INDEPENDENT. nOSEBUaoTsATURDAY. JULY 23. THE NEXT U. S. SENATOR. Wlile the Republicans have a good working majority in the next legisla ture there is aVeady exhibited :a want of harmony among them w hich prom ises a serious difficulty in the election of an United States Senator to succeed Senator trover.; It is unfortunate for that party that ; it should be divided upon such a vital principle as the divi-.- sion of the spoils, yet such is the fact. The Stalwarts at present have the loaves and fishes which are said to be dispensed under the present adminis tration by ex-Senator Hippie Mitchell, and it is not surpiiBing that the Stal wart members of the legislature should ba-very anxious to remove the ex from his title. The Featherheads, as they -jure designated by Mr. Couklins, have ' many members m the legislature who will strive with all the desperation oi hungry office-ieeksrs to secure the - election of a Senator who may be able te reinstate them in place. It is a very pretty fight as it stands. While the Stalwarts aro a unit en-the election of Mitchell, the Featherheads are di vided among themselves as to the choice of a candidate, besides laboring under the disability of being outside of the U. S. treasury. The Oregonian, while it emphatically declares against Mitchell and predicts that his election would destroy the party in the State, affects to treat the subject, as Tocts Bays, "of ne consequence at all." The Statesman takes a more decided stand upon the subject and i3 terribly in e fir mest It warns Democrats and Demo cratic editors not to espouse the cause of Mitchell, evidently fearing that the Democratic members will join the Stalwarts and elect him. The Feath erheads may as well abandea their fears; no Democrat will vote for a ' spoilsman of either faction, Mitchell, Thompson, Boise nor Harvey Scett. Should they nominate a pure man like f!. C. Beekman, of Jacksopville, the result might be otherwise, but as it is impossible to elect a man who is not pledged to divide w?th his own set, there is little, probability of such an event. If the opponents of Mr. Mitch ell' are really in earnest in desiring to secure civil service reforms and restor ing the Government to its original purity of administration, they can eas ily demonstrate it by selecting some Democrat whose character and princi ples are a sufficient guaranty for his acts, and many such can be found in the State. Until they do this it is nolie of our fight THE WARIN EGYPT. The present war in Egypt is no doubt incomprehensible to the majority of our readers, and a short explanation may be necessary. The British crpitnh'sts owned the majority of the stock in the .Suez canal from the Mediterranean to the Red sea, which they purchased from the Khedive of Egypt, who in the .chief ruler, holding his power from' the Sultan at Constantinople. Arabi Pasha, the chief of the rebel foi ces, claims that the country is an indepen dent nation under no obligations to ' England nor the Sultan, and as the canal was an injury to his country' he threatened to destroy it To prevent this England sent a fleet to Alexandria, the principal seaport of Egypt, and upon the refusal of Arabi Pasha to dismantle his forts, they destroyed the city with a terrible loss of life. Arabi has retreated a short distance from Alexandria and is preparing to resist an attack. Public sentiment in Eng land 'S divided on the policy of destroy ing Alexandria, and John Bright has resigned from the cabinet on tht account. It is a matter of vital im portance to England that she shall maintain the control of the Suez canal as her nearest route to her East Indian possessions, but the jealousy of her neighbors is liable to induce complica tions which may precipitate a general European war. Already the price of wheat has advanced. The political situation in Pennsylva nia is daily growing more serious for the Republicans, and the election of, the entire Democratic ticket is a cer . tainty. This condition is brought about by a third ticket placed in the field by . independent Republic ins in opposition to the Cameron or Stalwart wing. One of tbe gallant 306 is the Stalwart candidate for Governor. From a very hig'i Republican source it is asserted that Henry Villard will name the next Senator from Oregonl It has comi to bo that many of the representatives at Washington are nothing but paid attorneys for corpo rations, and so it will continue as long as the Republican partv rules the lane m m m ii i . . The condition of Senator Hill, of Georgia, is growing worse, and h;s death may occur at any minute. . ( B ACK BONE WANTED. We have tried to impress upon the mind of the Democracy tlat certain qualities are necessary for success. A'nd we Lave tried te point out the errors of our leaders and the passive submission of the people. We have yet another field to explore, and more advice to give. Let it be lemembered that we s:iy nothing in a spirit of fault-finding, or as a chronic growler. We only desire the success of the Democratic party ami the triumph of justice and right. With this we wiil be satisfied and until that success i accom p! li ve will not consider that our humble work in the wneyartl of Democracy is finished. We lay down as a premise that every Dem ocrat does, or at least should believe that the earunal principles of his party are necessary tc the good government of our Republic and for its guidance to that high destiny which is is due and which we all hope and pray for. Let us therefore- ho umlerto-.td us uuttiiig to me raiiK ana , me or. me Democracy. What we need is back bone. We need to stand by the party for the party's sake more. No good can come out of the Republican party. If there is no balm in Giiead, if there is no salvation in the Democracy, then indeed is our country lost. Back our leaders up, pat them on the back, to use a homely phrase ; let them know that whatever they do we wil! have faith in their honesty. Let the old enthusiasm that clustered around and fought for- Jefferson and Jackson be aroiieed. Let it gather peace around some C'f our leaders now, no matter who; let it exalt ..him. Let him understand that the party is with him, that it looks for him to link his name with Jefferson and Jackson and make a triumvirate of Democratic heroes. No matter who the man may be Tilden, Hancock, Thurman, Bayard are all honorable and great men ; or gome younger leader even. Make hi m the Democratic idol, rally round him, declaim his good qualities to the world and let all man kind know thit we are going to make him the people's Pres ident, p.nd let us do it 1 TLen when we i have him for President, he will recorr I . . . nize the responsibility upon him, and with the assistance of Statesmen in the Cabinet corruption will bo rooted out, navy robberies will be dispensed with and our navy put on a decent footing ; suit ajjainst government thiev s will not turn out farces, the railroads and the corporations will not vile the coun try, and on the other hand honesty and reform v.'ould lead the country, the revenue would be brought to an equitable basis, the Indians would be justly and firmly dealt with, the Chi nese problem would be more satisfac troly and i permanently settled. The good old times would, come again. Let U3 have backbone enough to stand together and accomplish this. Give our leaders a fair show. The Standard says: From the news corning to hand ficm day to day it would 8eem that Bliss, who is prose cuting the'jstar route cases on the part of the Government, h not above suspi cion in his; management, but that he is either the j"villain in the play" or sim ply a tool in the hinds of officials above him. One! case is dismissed upon the thread of jbreaking the Republican iDHjority ini the TJ. S. Senate, and another, involving the payment of a million of money, is to be arbitrated. The latter is the cases against Salisbury and Parker, w ho had secured some thing like sixty diil'ereut mail con tracts, and afterward obtained exhor bitant advances under the pretense of increased service. The willingness of the parties to arbitrate is a tacit ad mission of their fraud and will be bo regarded by the people. The public is rapidly losing confidence in the abili ty or desire of the Government officials to prosecute these fraudulent case3 to a successful issue. Instead of a vicor ous prosecution, there are no results apparent except vasodilating action, suoterruge ana evasion. The death of Airs. Abraham Lincoln is announced. Her remains were depos- i ited in the vaultj under Lincoln's mon ument at Springfield, 111., on Wednes day, with other members of the family. For many years she has net had entire control of her mental faculties. Jones, of Nevada, and Miller, of California, are the corporation Senators from th?s coast. Oregon will send a third. The Central Pacific has its tools, whv should not Villard 1 7 r Ths star route thieves are no be let off scott free. How long, O Lord, will the people keep the Republican party in power 1 ! 'The satisfaction and . enthusiasm with which the Democratic State ticket of Pennsylvania is received" beats any thing in the reeollection of the Pitts burg Post INTEMPERANCE. The temperance canss seems to have lost all its vitality in the community while the habit of social drinking is in creating to an alarming and jj ling the ranks of the drunkard by the score from the mere youths of the rising generation and ko prevalent is this that we see almost daily upon our slre.its voung men who but the ilav befeiv were uudu' the tem'er ewe of loving parents, sober ami industrious, filled vkiih hope and animation,' with a bright future before them; reeling under the iufi inee of the tempter with eyps red and swollen, countenance destroyed, mind clowded, turn gone and manhood lowered Lo a level below that of the brute all from the habit of eodai drinking. This too comes in a great manure from teisous who are engaged in the business of vending the ardent, violating the law of the staie .which mak it criminal to sell or give it to persons under age, or permit tuich youths to loit:-r or hang about - their places of busina-s, which is encouraged no doubt by the neeming iiiuiilerence of ti e officers whoso dutv it is to en force these laws ; during the last term a cause involving one cf these provi sions was before the circuit court, and so universally was it known that its provisions are disregarded by nearly all persons engaged in the saloon bus iness, and treated as a dead letter upon our .statute books by the public a;i.i our officers, that it was with the utmost difficulty that a jury could be prevailed upon to enforce its piovisions o i the ground, and for 'he reason that th 3 single cause; when there were known to be ' so many more, looked like partiality and savored of oppress" in. Now we have no quarrel with any person engaged in the saloon bus- iness, it is recognized by tiie laws of te State, and one peison has the same right to engage in the business that ev?ry other pers.u 1 as.. Hut some measure should be devised to arrest the increasing diimken nes among the rising-generation. It is a duty which we all owe to the State, as well as to our children, for when the habit cf laying around saloons fumbling over dirty pasteboards and guzzling beer ; becomes fixed upon a young man, his usefullness is gone, he soon looses his own self esteem, neg lects his business if he has any, and soon becomes incapacitated for any use ful calling, and it takes almost a super human effort to throw oiT the habit when it once becomes thoroughly fixed, especially while tho temp eris eon.star.tJv before them, and as lor the old eon firmed drunkard there is but little h pe, but as for the youth the stat should see to it that tli j temptation should be removed as far as possible.
