Oi.0. W. Jokes, Master J- P PrsCAS. frre!ary. BATUKDAY. NOVEMBER 13, 1S80 . POOS SHEEP: I he prospect lor 6heenraiers is r.ot altogether pleasing at this eeason of the year in Southern Oregon. Those who have not overcrowded their rane-ea will nnt be ninth losers; but those who have tionght tbe more sheen the better, and have crowded their pastures without consideration will loss at least one-third of their flocks before the winter is over. The trouble, in the first place, is O " 11 - ' - . i . that our stock-raisers have not planted any lasting grasses, but depended alone on the native varieties. These have in- tbe sheep ranges been almost entire ly tranped out, and in them it has otily been during favorable seasons that the sheep have fared veil enough in the fall to be able to , witbstasd the hardships of winter. The mortality in sheep last winter was more owing to the scarcity of grass in the tal months than to cold weather And u is beyond doubt a fact that w have Ies grass this year at this time than in November last year, and in consequence the ' sheep are in worse condition to meet tbe winter. If the sheep are poorer than they were last Tear at this time, and with less - -feed, it is but reasonable to sup pose the Joss in flocks will be greater, The want of forethought in our sheepraisers, m not planting hardy varieties, oi grass, is now etabli9hed, we think. Were . they to look to such work their sheep would not be tcday trying to eke out a starvation hvine on - i during the winter for the reason they had stsrved nearly to death during the fall. The native grass on the hills will not grow thrifty and become fattening nnless it has a si art from early fall show err.and it is true, while late raius may bring forth grass, that same -grass does not mature and have proper strengthening powers Grass to grow properjy raust have the warm rays of the sun; and if the variety isnot hardy enough to hold its own comparatively speaking, similar to the one we have experienced Una fall in Soothern Oregon, on til the rains come, in the mean time gathering fattening sob stance?, then it is ol no account for this year, before the grass can .come theBun will be too far m the south to give the grass its ne cessary aid. Let our sheepraisers think of ibis; arid let them re member that while we say one third of the sheep in Southern Oregon will perish tnisyear, tosee it we are not a prophet when next spring artivss. Jacob Thomas, a St.. Louis cooper, came home drunk the other evening. He retired to his room. Not long after closing tne door his wife heard a pistol shot; Xnowing he was drunk she did not go into the room. She said aays she thought he had discharge -ed the pistol foe amusement. She heard him breathing' very hoarse- ly for awile, but suddenly all was bushed and she knew he must be asleep. She did hot retire until ftbeut half-past nine. When she went into the room she found her husband in his cntomary placo on the front side of the bed. She got in at the toot and climbed over to the other side. She did net , , awake until nearly nine o' CIOCK the next morning. When 6he fcui p 10 cross sae . was sari jjiisea to see a pi.tol in the clenched fist .of. her husband. ijoouig closer she cauld see blood on his face. She called him, shook him, and lound that he was dead. lie had shot him self. , There are soma republicans (? in town ' who taj they hare "spotted" other republicans who Toted for Uaueock. The evidence howed thitt the m order was committed on a warm lnmmer nfght, while Kline and his wite were slsepicg out on the porch, hia head being blown to atom with a ahotzan. The widow of the bordered man W" recentlj confihed with twins, inount sne was going to die, and confessed that she prepared the pallet on the- porch lor the deed to he committed, and wag not be tide him when the deed was com mitted, aa believed, but had arisen while )mr husband was asleep it the assassins might do tbeii wcrK. bne sajs the shots were fired by one Gardiner, but he was seconded bv Noftsioger. The total length of the main line is 3C miles, and ex tensions are made almost every year. The road was commenced under the management of an in corporated company, interest of 7 per cent on tbe capital stock being guaranteed by the govern ment. But in building tbe first portion of the road it was neces sary to cross the mountains sear Bio, and by the time a hnndred miles were completed the capital was entirely exhausted. In 1865 the government bought the road of the stockholders, and it has since been bunt and run as branch of the imperial service, On the invested capital of rather more than $40,000,000 the gov ernment realizes an average year Iv income ot five and ono-half per centum yearly. A wrinkle to brain-workers especially for those who are sud denly called opon for an extra amount ot work. Too generally they fly to tea and coffee, power ful auxiliaries undoubtedly, but they exact too heavy payment for their services. Brillat-Savau re commands a cup ot chocolate, with the smallest piece of amber added at, one would sugar, though not a substitute for sugar. lie declares this mixture enabled him to get through an immense amount of work, while allowing him to sleep tranquilly when his labors were over. On the other hand two cups ot coflee prevented him from sleeping lorfry hours. Marsha Richelieu, who took. Minorca from the English, was the invent or of this innocuous stimulant Its only fault is that it costs money. A man at Antwerp, Michigan thought he discovered "the way to throw his sister-inslaw out of his house, without commuting Vhat the law regards as an assault. This was to take up the chair in which she sat and dump it out ot the window, including its occu pant, lie had a leeal right, ac cording to his theory, to do what he pleased with his own furni ture, lie executed his plan with violence.' Though he was care ful not to touch the woman, she was badly 'hurt by the lall. A justice disregarded his argumenj and fined him $25. In illustration of the peculiar dangers which attend the bring ing np of babies in St. Louis, a paper ot that city relates the fol lowing: In the parks ot this noted summer resort some ot the benches have but one standard, and the other day, atter one of the nurse girls set a baby down en one of these benches, and turned away to devote herself to her duty of gossip, a substantial gentle man sat down on the other end of the bench, and, as it had no leg the baby flew up into a tree and had to be taken down by the mas with a step ladder. The consumption of mules and horseflesh is steadily increasing in France. The weight has risen from 171,300 pounds ia 1866 to 1,982,620 pounds in 1879. In the principal cities of the province the consumption of home flesh may be considered to huvo liiirly taken root. The average price of horse meat is from 25 to 35 cents per pound. Each horse famishes . about fonr hundred weight ot ( maat, which is capable of being prepared in many ways, such as pot-au-fen, boiled, roast, hashed, haricot, jogged, fillet, etc. We should all go to work, now the election is over, to build up the county. . Douglas county needs many improvements in the way ot county roads; she needs branch lines ot lailroads-to the coast.
