Gloucester,'". Massachusetts, gives a
fearful record of the men lost in the

for in the simple use of grammatical
terms in opposition to her billingsgate

The writer of the article signed
Anxiety," in the first place, shows
too much temper ami too little respect
for . himself in his expressions to be
otherwise than a tool in the hands of
the Supreme Judges, i who have uu
doubtedly suffered under the caustic
criticisms of the author of "unfiled
opinions. --Perhaps in the second
place the writer is a judge who first de
cided privately against the clients of
Mr Dell, aud since Mr. Dell has shown
bis Want of knowledge, proposes to
get even by blackguarding him. Tt
might be, that a certain clerk in the
supreme court, In order to curry favor
with his master?, lias consented to
piay the role of the fisherwotnan. Oue
thing is certain, the uue who wrote
the article is familiar with the su
preme court upon the propriety of
disbarring Hon, Sidney Dell from
practice in the courts of the otate, and
allows his knowledge of what the
Judges (?) are thinkirg of when he

Had "Anxiety" a case is it to be
supposed that under an assumed name
he would attempt to blacken the
character of a ceull.-mun ? Would he
not return to the fight with unanswer
bl legal learning, demolishing with
ore stroke of his pen all that "Junius
Brutus" bus written ? Would lie de-
ceud to the deirrediition of a black
guard or the languwge of a street
walker, had he a mind equal to the
occasion or tiutbs to support an argu
ment ? Writer who have truth oh
their side Lave arguments to sustain
their positions, or there is nothing iu
the axiom that truth is invincible.
Words, iu the nvinU of those who
think for themselves, are but chulf;
when set iu type they mean nothing ;
when put i.ito the mouth of a black
guard they assume a form so disgust
ing to all that is well-bred or who
have sensible parents, that such turn
away from the one who utters such
pastiness with loathing or abhorrence.
If " Ju nius Brutus " is not a lawyer
time will tell. The feet that he ha
lost several cases before the present
supreme couit does not affect the
case. If "Anxiety " bad known his
duty, under sueh circumstances, and
had lie desired to prove the correct
r.css of his complaint, would he not
have attacked and upset the argument
of "Junius Brutus" by furnit-bing
better knowledge of law, instead of
writing personally of the writer? It
is a rule laid down, that he who
is first made rcad Is the one
who Is defeated in aa argument, and
the rule holds good in the case. In
his first reply to ."Anxiety,'' Hon.
Sidney "Dell wrote in a polite way
He did not call "Anxiety" a thief, liar
or scoundrel, or by an insinuation
point to the cowardly fact that "Anx
iety' was hidden behind an assumed
name. Hon. Sidney Dell to-day is
in the position of a brave sol
dier fightiug against a masked bat
tery. "Auxiety" is nothing less than
the cowardly enemy, who recognizes
his inferiority by falsely lending on a
combatant to a seemingly fair field of
contest. An ambush is not always
successful. Often the good sense of
the brave warrior overestimates the
coward and upnets his planning. The
Standard is the paper through which
"Anxiety" finds utterance. "Anxiety"
cannot there find much consolation.
Through Hou. Sidney Dell's writings
the Standard has become the leading
democratic Journal of Oregon. The
Standard cannot n:w altogether go
back upon its author ; for it says of
Mr. Dell :

Perhaps, the Staudard knows Mr.
Dell as "Auxiety" will learn of hiui,
aud should have known of him be
fore ; aud, perb..ip, the time will
come when the present supreme court
will be no more, and "Anxiety" find
that Mr. Deli's arguments have re
sponsive thonght in the minds of the
people, in the understanding of judges
of the law, and "Anxiety,'' iike Othel
lo, "has no further occupation." Even
then the claimed "subsidized organ'1
may laugh at tbe fool that attempted
and now shows his anxiety be'C
be does not perceive any other warmth
resulting from his efforts than which
proceeds from the warming that has
beeu administered to him. Such
warmings are only merited and re
ceived by anxious upstarts whom Na
ture ha deprived common sense, who
grumble anxiously against fate, and
who would defy Nature's best works
by declaiming against them.
Latest reports received by the secre
tary of State show that the republi
cans have two majority in the next
California State senate, with one fu
sion republ'can liable to go with
them, and a chance of one more from
the W. P. C. and N. C. P senators
elected. As these senators all hold over
for tbe next election of U. S. senator,
that body is certain for 1882 by from
three to Ave majority on the senatori
al successor to Booth. In the assem
bly the republican leaders claim S'J
or 40 Btraight republicans, though the
i papers only give 37 Btraight republi
cans since the death of Maelay of
Xapa. This body will be organized
!; with but 79 members, and 40 w ill be a
majority. ,
A correspondent from Tygh walley
says : That dreadful scourge, diph
i theria, which made its appearance in
. the neighborhood known as Womach
dtlement, about 1st of November,
has since that time caused ten deaths.
Mr. B. Savage lost four of his child
ren, Mr. A. Savage lost five of his
children, and bus one alck at present
who is getting better, and M. John
Mayfield his little boy.

It seems that the democrats have
given up the Idea of carrying any
other State north of Mason and Dix
on's line proper but New York. Bay
ard's purpose is to rob the greenback
of its legal tender qualities, and in so
doing he must necessarily lose Indi
ana, wed4ed aa Is that Slate to certain
fiuaneial theories, and to its love, the
greecuback. Therefore, New York
will be the turniDg point la the presi
dentlal coutet-t, and he who secures
New York will secure victory. Penn
sylvania used to be regarded as the
keystooe State, and the saying was,
"As goes Pennsylvania so goes the
Union;" but times have changed, and
in 18-0, as gtea New York so will the
presidential election so : and the Em
pire State will really furnish the bat
tlefield for supremacy between the two
grat political parties.
It is certain that Cornell, the last
repuM can nominee for governor wai
very unpopular with the members of

In r.ur last i.sue we briefly noticed
the fact, that a majority of the city
trustees bad decided to coimueuee suit
in the circuit court against Sol. .Abra
ham to open a s root through his gar
den to the river. Now, in all candor
we ask, what use or benefit would it
be to anyone to have a street opened
through Abraham's garJeu ? Is it
not clear to every taxpayer in this
city thut this stilt is to be both tedious
and exiiensive, and does not every
citizen of the town know that it is
dictated by spite aud malice. The suit
is brought at the expense of the tax
payers. They have to foot the would
be heavy bill, for no purpose iu the
world but to gratify a Fink, who has
not at heart the good of the city tr
any one in the city but Fink.
The proprietor of this town has
over and over again told us he never
at any time intended to have the
street extend through Abraham's gar
den to the river. Does anyoue seri
ously want it ? If so, for what pur
pose ? Why should it be opened !
The answer is, to gratify Fink at the
expense of tbe tax-psjers. And now,
we ask why not insteaJ of expensive
litigation that is to result in no good
to any one, go to work aud by proper
sewerage try and improve the health
of the city and save valuable lives ?
The reason Is obvious that would not
gratify Fink.
l ast Thursday, says the Statesman,
James Hovey, a nhomakerof Sheridau
was drowned iu the larga ditch

place. He left town about 5 o'eloek
iu the evening, heavily under the in
fluence of spirituous liquor, for the
purpose of hoarding the train, but
when near the depot he slipped into
the ditch that runs along the road
side. 'I he train men saw him atid
offered assistance, but only lectivtd
curses iu reply. The tram moved rr,
and Hovey a: ai ted for the town, and
still in the ditch. He r cee.ied ail
right until he came to a fall of about
fifteen feet, into which a number of
rails had hitched, one end being above
the upper level. When the uniortu
nate man struck these, he was thrown
headforemast into tiie water, while
his feet were C;ttight and held by the
upper end of the rail. In this posi

The quickest railroal building ever
done in Nebras.Ua was performed at
Lincoln recently, on the Burlington
and Missouri extension, when a gang
t'f sixty men with two trains laid one
mile of new road, putting in two bridges
and two crossings, aud making connec
tions at both ends with the main line,
between 8 o'clock in the evening and
breakfast time, and the men whodiove
the spikes were obliged to havelauterns
held close to their work. The work
was hurried because it passes across
the proposed right of way of the Union
Pacific branch.

ton, the Ban Francisco Chronicle says:
"It is impossible to overestimate the
awakening that is in store for that
splendid but undeveloped country.

States has decided that where a note
bearing an agrend rate of interest Is
not paid at maturity it must thereafter
draw only "legal" interest, unless it be

A SUGGESTION.
The Jacksonville Time expresses a
doubt as to the completion of "the
wagon road to the sea " Perhaps the
idea of a practical wagon road to this
place, wherein both Douglas and Jack
son counties cu!d unit to build it
would meet with geueral favor aud a
warm and substantial support In both
counties. This U merely a suggsstUn,
and yet there is argument In its favor.
In the first place, to give to Jackson
county an outlet to the sea without
proper means to carry away i;s pro-
ducU and iu return bring hock i's im-
pertation?, would be useless s far fa
the people of Jackson are concerned.
It must be admitted th-.t sailing ves
sels could not be depended upon to

to sailing vessels is to trust to the

able, all well and good ; if not, iit not

teachers of that State will hereafter
hold their positions during good le
havior, nor can they be removed, even
for cause, except after a notice of thirty

be imitated in every Siate in the

Texas is trying to' get up silver
excitement. Large stories sre told of
discoveries in Presidio county of that

it might be well to wait for authentic
