ones planning and working for the fu
ture, Republicans are just as busy
They are laying their plans aa assidu
ously. Even Thayer's partner would
like to repeat his trip to Washington
as a congressmen, and he would not
i object, to being elected Senator of
having his partner elected. To a more
or less extent the very faction that
fought the return of Mitchell to
the United States Senate, is now
working for official preferment. Per
haps some will excuse the members
thereof with this regard on the grounds
that having been a long time away
from the public and official table they
have become quite hungry. This is
only the excuse of every office-seeker.
They may win in the conventions, and
they may not. The danger to the Re
publican party is that they may
all turn traitors as tbey did before and
find a iwouthpiece In the Oregon ian.
J he danger, however, is lessened by
the failure of last year of the faction
to send Corbett or a O rbett man to
the Senate, and in electing members
to the State Senate they will not sac
riflce the party so'ely to gratify per
sonal nullce as before for the simple
reason revenge secured in this way
would be a too eostly article They
may be so . crazy, however, and in
their madness prefer general ruin to
particular success of the opposition
inside the party, thus placiug the
party on an equal footing under any
circumstances with the Democaracy.
Time will also show what will be the
, result in this matter.
The location of the harbor of refuge
on the coast is yet unsettled. It is
about time a decision was made. Con
gress will soon meet, and a delay in
the selection of the desirable point of
location should not be continued so
tbat the matter will not receive se
rious consideration at Washington at
an early date. So far s ape Arago
is concerned, Nature made it a natur
al harbor of refuge, and it is used as
such half the year. Under these cir
- cu instances we cannot see why Cape
AragA will not be selected, and why,
when the whole country Is anxious
for a decision, and anxious to build a
railroad to the bay, that the decision
is delayed. -

Let us see what Independents have
done for themsei7ta in Douglas county-
Prior to the beginhitig of Inde
pendent rule there certainly was a
large county indebtedness. That coun
ty Indebtedness has no longer the
frightful proportions It evinced prior
to the first Independent j success In
Douglas. In fact there is nothing now
of. the county debt. Tl4 first Inde
pendent doso was that of a skillful
doctor, so far aa the health of the pa
tient was concerned. The disease was
a mixed one ono embracing a mix
ture of dishonest Republicans and dis
honest Democrats, and the Indepen
dent doctor prescribed a jmixture of
bonest Republicans and honest Demo
crats as an antidote. ; . In this case it
has been proven that the remedy was
better than the disease -inj fact, cured
the disease to that extent that it drove
It entirely from the body politic, and
made in opposition a champion so
healthy that since then the disease
has been afraid. to put lnja bold ap
pearance- In other words,; the county
indebtedness created through conniv
ance of the ring, and divided in the
wsy of profits pocketed by both seem

donates a dollar for the Fourth of July,
base ball club or church, is gratefully
rememberd. Ob, it Is a sweet thing to
be an editor. lie passes, 'free, you
know.''
The question now is with politicians,
"Who will the Independents' support
in the next contest for county offi
cers?" Well, our answer is : the best
man ; and before the timej comes the
best man's name will not be made
public for the reason it will not be
known. The Independents do not set
up primaries, Btock conventions or lay
plans for any man's advancement.
They, however, have the sense belong
ing to thinking men, and their pur
pose is, under all circumstances, to
show a determined opposition to all
dishonest and incapable office-seekers.
And having the balance of; power, the
independents will carry any election
they desire to. ;
Another ca.-e of accidental shooting
is reported by an exchange. The ac
cident occurred last Friday A young
man named Fisher, working for An
drew Millard, a well-known resident
of Cowlitz county, amused himself on
the afternoon named by snapping caps
on a shotgun, supposed to bit empty, at
Mrs. Millard and Miss Burt, a visitor,
and frightened them. The ladies beg
ged him to desist, but Fisher said he
would snap one more and -quit. The
cap exploded the charge, 'which en
tered the heart of Mrs. Millard, killing
her instantly. . , j
The defeat of Robinson; in New
York is now considered in the East as
having settled Tllden's chances for the
Democratic nomination fori the presi
dency of 1880, and Democratic journals
are satisfied that Bayard, of Deleware,
is the coming man. If Bayard is nOm
inated for president, Hendricks will
hardly have an opportunity to decline
a second pTace,.on the; ticket more than
once. Bayard is the strongest man
the Democrats have, and '.there will
be found plenty of men who will
gladly join Bayard in the race.
The editor of the Chicago Inter-
Ocean is very careless in his remarks.
For Instance, amiably refers to the
editor of the Times, of that city, as
the hoary-beaded old Reprobate,
whose life has been a war On purity
and patriotism." The editors of the
Standard and Oregonian, in their dis
cussions, have never improved upon
this, and they should at Once sub-
sbscribe for the Inter-Ocean that they
may more effectively blackguard each
other. j
The New York Herald, a Sort of ad
viser general to the whole American
people, and a good share of the world
besides, takes its pen in hand to say it
"will go so far as to assure him
that it does not believe tbat 'any third
term Republicans wants or exnecta

promising. In nearly every New
England manufacturing town the
mills have been put in operation, and
are working full fores on full time.
Employers and employes arei prosper
ing, and all are satisfied with the sit

Our exchanges announce the Indict
ment of John A. Carr for attempting
to bribe a member of the Portland
city council. Carr is not a man who
would allow himself to be caught In
a manner very easy, and it will be a
matter of surprise to us if his convio-
vlction follows his indietment
The warehouse of Gaston Ferral,
Albany, was destroyed by fire on the
12th Inst. The total loss footed np to
$36,000, and the fire was the most
destructive ever known In the place.

It Is not every oae who asks himself

live," because, strangely enough, it is
the belief of most persona that their
lives will bo exceptionally lengthy:
however, life assuarance companies
are aware of the credulous weakness
of those whose lives they assure, and
have, therefor,: compiled numerous
tables of expectancy of life for their
own guidance, which are carefully
referred to before a policy is granted.
The following is one of those well
authenticated tables In use among as
surance companies, showing the aver
age length of life at various ages of
persons of average health, and in the
second column we are enabled to peep,
as It were, behind the scenes of an as
surance office and gather from their
table the number of years they will
give us to live. This table has been
the result of careful calculation, ana
seldom proves misleading. Of course
sudden and premature deaths, says
the K Y. Mercury, as well as lives
nnnauallv extended, occasionally oc
cur; but this is a tame oi ine average
expectancy of life of an ordinary man

SOUTHERN OREGON MINES.
Reports received from all part9 of
Southern Oreeon are favorable to a
prosperous mining season. From
every point we hear that heavy smr
storms have visited the mountains
surrounding the different camps ; and
that they came just in the nick o'
time," when the earth was charged
with water from heavy rains. Snow
of itself, without the earth has been
btfore thoroughly watered, amounts
to but little; but snow following a
heavy rainstorm and several nights of
heavy frosts insures about three times
asurface flow of water and is three timi s
longer in duration. There have been
heavy rain storms in the mountains,
iheavy snow storms, every flake from
which has only made the white cover
ing deeper and more solid. It is the
opinion of the miners that the season's
run beginlng earlier than usual will
extend three months beyond the
time occupied in making the last
year's runs, and that the yield of the
precious metal for 1SS0 will exceed
that of any year dating back a period
of eight years.
The dead body of James McKillup
was found on the 8th inst. on the
farm of Mr. E. F. La to son, near Wil
liamina, in Yamhill county, partially
buried beneath a huge pile of rails,
and horribly crushed and mangl
ed. He had been missing since
about the 20th of October. In
driving down a hillside with a heavy
load of rails, his wagon was upset
and he being caught beneath it and
its heavy load is supposed to have
been instantly killed. The wagon
still lemained, and attached to it was
one ot the horses, the other having
escaped.
The official count has given the
New York election to the Republicans.
They have elected every one of their
candidates for State officers with the
exception of the candidate for State
Enquirer, and have a large majnrity
in both branches of the Legislature.
-A woman who was called as a wit
ness in an assault case tried in the
Edinburgh police court recently, on
being asked by the magistrate what
was the profession of her husband an
swered promptly: "My husband Is
a bankrupt, sir."
Rev. Wm. McKay.- after reading
several notices from his pulpit in the
Methodist church at Genoa, Ind
said there was another matter to
which he desired to inform his con

Mr. Hat ton a neighbor.

A white man in Maryland shot at a
negro with murderous intent, but in
stead of killing him killed his grand
child. The republican papers declared
this to be another democratic outrage
until the discovery was made that the
white man was a republican.

Chinese have emigrated into the Sand'
wich Island in such large numbers as
to create considerable alarm in the
little kingdom. Nearly 2,500 of the
Celestials have landed at Honolulu in
the above period.
Senator Grover has announced to
the Albany Democrat that he will
retire to private life at the expiration
of his senatorial term of office. We
