A scribbler, whose earmarks are
plainly difcernable in hisconiposition,

might hide his hea-l under a nom de
plum or his " caudle uutler a bushel,"
but even then there would be enough
left outside to expose his redieulous

'letter cane from elsewhere than Rose
burg would have as little thought aa

The whole story of the writer is an

was a slate made up by this paper, is
it . to be supposed the editor of the In
dependent would tell of it T "Slates'
and particularly those of a political
nature are always kept silent and a
secret ; and even hi this caw it Is uot
even possible that th facts would be
given to the head and front of the
Roseburg ring, the natural enemies
of this paper and the people of Doug
las county: To argue in thisway is to
argue in. -defiance of the rules fold
down in the laws of evidence, and the
findings of honestjudges upon the ju
dicial bench. . ,
But laying the foolishness of the
charge contained in the communica
tion aside, aud taking It up otherwise,
does it riot appear that the writer had
some other motive than that of an im
partial relator of news ? " There's the

speak of Hon. Binger Hermann as he

As to Hon. Binger Hermann, be no
tifies us thnt there has been nothing
in his speech or actions to show that
be seeks a nomination. So far as this
paper is concerned, it has no " slate
it has no candidates to put forward to
forestall the wishes of the people.
With us the people must speak first.
When the proper time comes the peo
ple's battle will be our fight ; and
then . there will be no reason for
' countcrfiit Eugene letters to tell
whom we will support, or whom we
will oppose. We will then speak
plainly and in terms unmistakable
We hud anticipated from the first
that Gov Thayer would find but few
friends even in his own party, but we
never imagined that the proof would
come to early as it has. The Salem
Mercury never fails whenever the op
portunity oilers to deal the Goveruor
a left-handed compliment, and the
Portland Standard finds the Gover
nor's cause so hopeless as to feel com
pelled to oppose the Governor's ad
minintr.iti..n. When it comes to that
pass that the Governor Is not sup
ported by the two leading Democratic
organs, it is surely time for him to re
peat, In the language of the poet :
" Farewell, a long farewell, to all my
greatness" so far as the Democratic
party is concerned, and in doing bo,
tell nothing more than the truth.
A lower-country exchange brings
the report that Hon. Jas. K. Kelly
will not be a candidate for Supreme
Judge at the next election, for the
reason the salary paid is not large
enough. We had heard it reported
that it was not the salary business,
but somethlug about Patrick's .dis
patches in the last : presidential
squabble, that changed Chief Justice
Kelly's mind. Perhaps somebody who
despises newspapers and wishes to
rob them of an Imrortant item of
news has warned Judge Kelly or the
future. We don't know anything in
the premine.
Since the Secretary of the Treasury
bas Instructed the Custom House offi
cers to receive greenbacks In payment
of duties the same as gold, the yellow
eagles and twenties have increased to
such an extent in the Treasury that
for lack of room in the gold depart
ment the clerks are storing it in the
silver room. People prefer the paper
money to gold as long as It possesses
e-pual purchasing value in all public
as well as private transactions.
Though there were only 157 Chinese
in 1S57, they have since then increased
until they n amber many thousands,
and in the Chinese colony they have
established they have 800 laundrie,

! SENSIBLE REMARKS.
The Portland Standard is sensible
in these remarks, and the visit of its
editor to Coos Bay ha been a benefit
to that section of the State. Many
who live In Portland have believed,
and do believe, t hat the construction
Of a line of railroad from this point to
Coos Bsy, will be injurious to Port
land ; but the editor of the Standard
has seen for himself, and we wish ail
Portland bad the ' same opportunity
before passing judgment. Th e Stand
ard say :
, "A railroad fromRosi-bure tothehead
of the Cbquille river would be of great
benefit,"aud in our opinion, would be
a prontaoieinveHtmeut. as tne country
through which it would lie constructed
is already settled and of the richest
character. The idea that such a roa J
would be injurious to Portland is ri
diculous. Tficre is no business connec
tion between that point and. Port
land at the present aud this: road
would form a liuk which would
result to our advantage, as we could
become a successful competitor for
trade of which we are at present de
prived entirely. But it should not be
a question as to whether Portland is
to be directly benefited by such an en
terprise. We are satisfied that it
would be to the interest of Portland,
and know that it would result in a re
markable developemeut of a wealth
which to-day is worthless, simply for
want of facilities for exporting. If
the rivers and bays on which the coal,
agricultural and timber wealth of
Coos county are located were im
proved so ttiat exporting would be
practicable, there is no reason to doubt
out Mat section would soon become
one of tiie richest and most prosperous
in our State, and would add millions
or dollars anunally to our wealth, of
whicb Portland would receive her full
aiiare."

train daily from this point, there
would arrive In Portland two and
three, and instead of only a million
dollars in goods arriving from South
ern Oregon the amount received three
millions. Time will prove, In fact, this
much, and if Portland helps to build
the railroad, and it is constructed, the
people or tne metropolis will reap a
benefit, and feel the shame of every
one who foolishly stands in bis own
light and afterwards, late in the day,
is convinced of his shortsightedness
by indisputable, self-evident facts.
NEW LIFE.
Newspapers now argue that the
death of Brigbam Young bas given a
new lease of life to Mormonism in
Utah. There is truth In the argument.
Statistics of passengers from Europe
show so plain that there is such a re
markable increase in immigration of
Mormon converts to the United States
that there remains no doubt as to the
rapid growth of the religion and in the
number of its adherents. Even the
authorities at Washington have at
last become alarmed. At last is the
proper word. Though there have
been Whig, Democratic and Republi
can administrations Mormonism has
been allowed to defy the law and con
tinue polygamy. Pike's armed march
upon Salt lake was a farce. The vie
tims of the Mountain Meadow masacre
were never avenged outeide the death
of Lee ; there are to-day in Salt Lake,
roaming free the streets of the city of
the Saints" more than one of the
participators in that bloody massacre
of innocent people. In defiance of the
laws of the land It exists to-day Mor
monism flagrant and Mormonism de
fiant, laughing at the government and
those who direct its powers. And if
the -present administration does any
thing more than those who have pre
ceded it more than wrting letters beg
Ing foreign powers to keep away from
America those of Mormon belief then
the people will have Just grounds to glo
rify over a pleasant surprise. But the
people must not hasten In the prepa
rations for'a torchlight procession It
may be that as in the time of Pierce,
Buchanan, Lincoln and Grant Hayes
will content himself with a flow of
words, an expression of regret for the
existence of the moral sore, and finally
give fresh protection for Brigham
Young, Jr., and those who vote him
prophet.
Will the next President of the
Unked States be an Independent ?
There is a possibil.ty if not a proba
bility of such a thing. In case of the
election being thrown into the House
of Representatives, Congressman De
La Matyr will have the casting vote
with the Indiana delegation, without
which there can be no election. " Sup
posing De L Matyr should be ob
durate In his independent way, might
not the mountain go to Mahomet? If
the opportunity arises for one man to
name the President and the Indiana
Congressman does not seize it he wilj
fail in immortalizing himself iu
American history
The Argus inquire why we m irked
the value of land in Douglas county,
on an average, at $3,016 per acre.

we were fooled in our dispatches con
cerning the reputed "gold" discover
ed. The truth is, the " gold " was
not provenjo be copper until after our

the time of our publication everybody
on Coos Bay thought a great gold dis
covery had lieen made.

and the frantic appeals for troops

mands of demagogues, many of
whom boast of the prowress and glory
of the nation, and yet, for a little
cheap, notoriety or party ad

Qen. Hancock is proposed as the
Democratic presidential candidate,
and it is hoped by the party to defeat
Tllden in convention with him. Han
cock lias been spoken of as a candi

past twelve years. Lightning may
strike him this time, but wq doubt its
doing so. The " unterri fled" must
and will have Tilden and his " bar"!."
The Star has not yet decided that
our statement of the "Democratic
slate " was incorrect. It dodges the
point by making counter and foolish
charges. It should think of the pe
culiarity of the ostrich, which hides
its head and thinks no one can find it.
Misa Addle L. Irish, : of Mono
county, California, was lately elected
county school superintendent. She
appointed a man as ber deputy, and
then married him.
; Alexander Stephens says there has
been so much corruption in offlce and
so much mismanagement of State
affairs in Georgia that the Independ
ent party has become very strong,
and be expects to see it carry the
State this Fall.
Speaking of fast time on railroads,
the Rochester Herald says that the
special train that carried Mr. Vander-
bllt to Buffalo recently, made 81 1
miles from Syracuse to Rochester in I
74 minutes.
Secretary Sherman's latest advices
from Ohio lead him to predict that
Foster will have a larger majority I
than has been given to any Republi
can candidate in the State for years.

bles. The remainder of the town was I
burnt clean.
Contrary to the Star's assertion,
John Kelly, the Custom House Col
lector, would aa soon attempt to
