Bear that Liked Fish, but a
that Didn't Like the Bear.

We won Id like to give the nam of the
hero in this story, but he has been laughed
at co nmch by t. e boys that we are afraid
his usual patience aud good nature are ex
hausted, and he wonld not feel kindly to
ward us should we publish him to the
vorld. Suffice U to say he does not live a
thousand miles from Roseburg, and hi no
ted for the many stories he tells of mar
velous bear hunts. He is also quite a fia-
rrman, and this last passion led him to
s nk the ; headwaters of the North
Cmpqua in quest of mountain trout,
l b. re were two other boys with him la
the trip, nd they were hunters. One
ox-ruing our hero took his line and pole
snd started up the river. ' He soon found a
place where th-i water dashed over a cas
cade and settled In a deed pool below, . It
wax just such a place as a true fiaherma
is pleased to see, bat to reach the pool It
was necessary to wade out into the watsr a
distance of thirty feet This was done, and
the line cast. The m ment the artificial
fly of th angler struck the water and be
gan tripping over the ripples in the cur
rent, a ha!fi ound trout struck the hook
with a snap and was swung out oi the wa
ter without trouble. Having no basket the
fisherman tossed the fisu over his had to
the bank behind without turning round.
The fly ageiu struck the water, avrain it
was taken by a huotrrv trout and strain the
trout was thrown to the bank after being
unhooked. So the sport continued until
thirty flue trout had been caught ' Just
then there was a sm-cttna of lips and a
snapping of tevth. The fisherman turned
about, liebind htm on the bank sat a cin
namun bear who was piavinir "short stop."
The prvsence of bruin was discovered by
the bbherman just as he had tossed a fish
to the bank and the bear was in the act ot
catching it on the fly. One glanca ook in
the whole situation. The bear had ate the
fish as Iki-t as caught, and had, In gymnas
tic s'.yle. taken them in while in the air.
The fisherman wasn't mad at the bear ; he
didn't even feel like wadlnsr back to the
bank and cuffing bruin's ears. Ho simply
remarked, Great gaud !" aDd waded over
to the other side ot the river, to be greeted
by the laughter of his friends who had been
patient watchers of the sceue, and who, by
well-directed shots from their Winchester
rifles, soon put an end to bruiu's existence.

.Narrow Escape of Mr. Jas. Billard.
Mr. Jas. Dillard bad a narrow escape
from being eaten by wolves in the neigh
boihood of Steamboat creek, some thiity-
five miles from this city last week. Ha
had two horses with him, and was engag. d
In prospecting.' The wolvee (large gray
fellows) evidently wanted the horses at
first bat as they were then but few in
Bombers Mr. Dillard retreated and man
aged to keep the animals back for a time.
Their continued bowlings soon brought
more waives to the band which at last
numbered fifty. Mr. Dillard then stripped
bia horse of their packs and saddles and
turned them loose, and . the frightened
brutes soon crossed Steamboat and pot a
gord stream of water botwaea them and
the wolves which then turned tor the rider,
Mr. Dil'ard escaped after a hard run by
climbing a tree,
This Is the first time that the wolves
have dared to show fight in this way ; but
Mr. Dillard was high np in the mountains
where the animals seldom see a man. and
probabl v have not yet learned to be afraid
of one.

C. C. Brogan and lady, who have Ire a

interested in the hydraulic mine of Rob,
Kckenon & Co., was compelled to leave ns

tive, and. his health comparatively bad. We
regret his going away and trust that he
will find comfort in his migratory de
srture. ,
Dan Hunt, a resident ot Josepbine coun
ty, and one of the stockholders of the
Grand Applegate mining company, has an
interest, in the diigimrs to the amount of
45,000 shares. The olaim is proving to be
better and better, and future indications are
that the more it is worked the better the
prospects. The company has ground enough
to work for fifty years, and from the opin
ion of mining experts it i said to be one
of the best hydraulic mines in Southern Ore
gon. The quality of the gold is coarse and
quart bearing in places, bnt tha moat of
it is fine and smooth and soina $19 per ounce.
Singular Death.
'Old Doc," an old stage horse known as
Dan Smith's off leader before Smith was
sent to the penitentiary for complicity in a
robbery of ti e V. S. mail, died Tuesday
morning - under singular circumstances.
During Monday night he struck hi head
sgaiust the heavy timbers ot the stage
company's barn, and received a blow that
knocked him down. ' Old Doc" never got
up again, but lor four hours the old XeU
ow kept his feet Ovine: as if trottiucr in
the stag trace and asaiast lime, and
when he had exhausted himself so he could
not make the motion of trotting more, and
was c)v-red with white foam from his ex
ertions, he gave a groan and died. ' Old
Doc" Virtually trotted himsnlt to death.
Will Have a Midwife.
The other evening a young gentleman ot
this place called open a youug lady. Dur
ing his visit the sul jeot of marriage came op
for discussion, and in the conversation that
followed the young man deplored the fact
that married ladies ware compelled to do
housework. He became eloquent finally, and
with all the dignity at his command, he de
clared he intended marrying some day,"and
whai is more," he oontinued, "my wifeshall
not work, for I propose to always keep a
midwife about the house." The young
man had to consult a friend next day before
ha could account for the blushes and smiles
of the ladies present when he made his dec
laration concerning hia proposed kindness for
1 future wife.
Lynch and Park's Benefit.
As shown i by the correspondence published
elsewhere, Beath's Minstrels will give a
complimentary benefit to Messrs. Lynch and
Parks at Masonic Hall next Tuesdsy. Over
one hundred tickets have already been sold.
The performance will be first-class in every
respect aud one which will surpass every
thing ot the kind ever witnessed in Rose
burg. We hope there will be a crowd
ed bouse, for every performer will do his
best and all are artists in their line. Give
the boys a substantial benefit.
New Enterprise at Myrtle Creek.
The Alden Fruit Preserving Company
met at their office last Saturday and elected
Hans Weaver, J. Chadwick, Geo. Dement,
W. C. Evanta and D. S. K. Buick, Direc
tors; D. S. K, Buick, President ; and John
Weaver. Secretary. The building and ma
chinery are all completed and the eompany
will commence drying plums tnis week, to
be followed with corn, apples and other pro
ductions in their season.

Donglas Connty Road Co's. Candidate.
It is now reported, and upon pretty
good authority, that' all the power in the
hands of the Doug'ss County Road com
pany will be used to re-elect Judge Fritn
to the Supreme Court, since the Judge
gate to that company the Canyon road.

The Oakland Trouble.
The other day the Marshal of Oakland
impounded two horses in the city pound at
that place. The owner learning of the Mar
shal's action proceeded to tho pound and
pounded the lock to the enclosure to pieces.
and while the Marshal stood by w ith up
lifted club another guarded the Marshal
with another club and the owner of the
horses walked awav with :hem. And this
is not all. Wednesday afternoon Judge
Watson issued the necessary legal papers

house in this city and show cause m-hi they
should not be arrested for contempt of Court

Lost Mine Found.
Messrs. Otey and Woodruff have made a
luoky discovery. Several years ago a gold
and silver bearing ledge of great richness
called ths Olilla Reef was found, and after
wards lost, The o-entlemen named a U

hav withm twenty-nve miles of this city
perhaps the richest quai tz ledge in tbe
State, Several specimens of the ore have
been brought to Roseburg, and other spesi-
