W. Jones, Master. J. P. Dckcan, rHsiretary. IT MEANS LIBERTY. There is in iudependentistn fro? dom. It i is the embodiment of all there is m the word liberty. It means notkiug mora and is nothing less than that a citizen shall do as he please?, and that he ehall work tor hia own interests and the promotion ot those pr.ns ciples of government' which to day allows the American to boast that he is permitted by the laws of his own creation to govern himself, to loster bis own inter ost9,aod to protect himselt against the dishonest office-Reeker and the intriguing politician. It is the carryirg out ot the ideas which first tound a home in the minds ot Jefferson, Adams and those others whoso wisdom and disre gard of personal aggrandisement gave to uh the grand and glorU ous republis which to-day is ours by right of heritage, and to whose far-reaching thought provided that which will never be other viee than the wonder of all man kind eo.long as tho people assert, their freedom, and by honest work try to maintain it as handed down by them who gave it existence...,'- , ,;. . - . 1 To prove this it is not neces Vary, to call attention to the fact i that those who were in the be i gincing did not allow party ties to "prevent them from opposing ' dishonesty in office. lie who was s h thief was' named as such, and he who committed another wrong : wna called by his right name and speedily punished, n . , - t -1 j . u,i.umo uas cnangea parties question is no longer : "Is he ' capable is he honest?" The point aimed at by party leaders is .to secure' ofHse, and even in our ' own State do we find it irao that an official thief escapes for fear tlifc exposure of his misdeeds will lead to an injury of the party. The success of the party is above all otter considerations, and if a man has money, and has a will to spend it he i more likely to be placed at the head ot a : State or county ticket thau a poor man; for the reason he will use his money to secure election, and throoerti ni8 money witnout a single other recommendation in his behalf he will ride into of fice to make more money. And the same wealthy man is otten, too often,, an aspirant for office, ttringmg the subject home to ' those of Southern Oregon who are more directly interested, we would ask how many times has 'ouch voter kuown men of meuis to work and forestall the ac tion of primary meetings, and after wards not only control; the county and State conventions for he benefit for themselves but for the election of their friend ? A Lundred times perhaps Las this been the case in Southern Oregon, and that many times have the rank and file ot the members of . the parties went to the polls to ratify by an election nominations which money and .wire-pulling had secured contrary to the pop- ' 1 - ' 1- ' Tw . ..... mar wisn. Aieiier proor I tnis fact cannot bo furnihed than is .found in the frequent Independ ent movements ot the countrv, and the. restless spirit evinced by the tax-raving classes which finds utetrance through independent nominations. That spirit is nn outburst of . feeling from those who ask atyi-Tesiro nothing more than honest, economical and capa ble government, and by the citi-. zens who think tor themselves and will not bo driven, contrary , .to the intenions. ot those who founded the American republic, to the polls as so many cattle to tne slaughter to vote tor the eleo tion of those uominatec1 by rings ttuu c-njuen itbu in political par ties having for their guidance the convenient though questional ble met to of "princi&les, not men." With Independents it has come to tbem through pad expe dience that .the motto should be rocn not principles, and tbey have found out that t6 elect hon est men to office U to trust prin ciples in saftj luiiji'a ard to vote ' far the best, .man is to work for Oio salvation of the nation. VV hen they do this they enjoy the rights of freemen and are free, and if they have greater prosperity, ore b!ee?ed with a hearty oppeti'e and their sleep is sweet nt night, they rightly can attribute it nil to the Idot thatthey are good citizens. true Americans, and have no de signing politician a waiter W tilt them how to vote "tor the Kood of the party." BENTON COUNTY ALLRIGHT. All Southern Oregon is ac quainted with Hon. Green B. Smith, of Ct. litem county, and everyone eo acquainted knows Mr. Smith to be n nonorublu gertleman, an influential citizen and a man of undoubted verac:ty. lie is universally accredited with being possessed with sound and careful judgment, and h'.s friends, enemies and ueigbbora will say of him that he never espouses the cause of anyone or; of any party without he fir9t becomes fully convinced that such cause i9 that of the right and in the end will work out a righteous purpose. Since 1872 Mr. Smith baa been an Independent, end in , that lune he has asked tor no office. He has remained since j then true to the cause of the people, and been bitter aud nnreleutkss in his op position to all rings and cliques ot parties - Knowing the gentleman to be as stated above, prompted us to write him a letter inquiring as to the Independent cause in Benton county. In answer he sends ,ns the following: i i ConTATXia. Aogast 11, 1379. ; TOTHB EDITOR TUB tsDKPiNDENT Dear Sir : Your letter ia received ami its ccn'ems duly uoie.l. living away from hmie when your letter arrived, accouuts f.r my daisy in writing you an answer. I have been an Independent since 132, and am now of all political rings and Cliques. benton county is more Independent to day than ehe was in 1874, anl Benton county will be with Southern Oregon in the n:xt contest in lavor of reform. Tours truly, Ukekn B. Smith, VTith Beiitoc county allright, with Laue ripe for the movement, and the Independents strong m the faith in Douglas and Jackson counties ' as well as in Coos and Curry, there is nothing now in the way of a general aud success ful revolt against strict party rule a revolt that 'will be sweeping in effect aud carry with it houcst and capable men into office. All that is necessary to make the movement without tear of failurt-, is first, a convention of conference, attended only by men of irre proachable character Wbb have no axes to grind and have a common sympathy with the people as tax payers, oucn convention can draft a platform and man out the plan of battle, aud then each member thereof may return to hi3 home and prepare for the work to bu accomplished. And at home every citizen must attend the primaries and convention, and no man must be given a place on the ticket or receive the en dorsement of Independents Ml there is one better man who will take tho place. If this is done, and it is established that the fight is to be made -not to put any particular man in office, but to promote the interests' of 'the entire people the people will rally to the support Of the ticket with an enthusiasm which will not abate until the i victory is won. ' . ; - ..,....-., ,. The Jacksonville Times gives us credit for attempting to cause a third party movement in South tni Oregon, and makes light of what it terms our eftorts in that direction. It the Times man wps not afraid we will, accomplish what we are trying to effect, he would not have so much to say about ue. Teople, generally, do not complain of what does not disturb them, and the Tinws pus us very forcibly in mind of tho boy badly frightened who whis tled and laiiglted , to keep np his courge. A tnird party move ment in Southern Oregon means that ' such party organs ns the Times shall havo nothing to do, and the cliques and rings which such papers support and aid to of fice, that their member- may speculate with the people's mon ey, shall have an end; consequently it behooves the Times and its sup porters to make light of honesty and cry out against that which, to them, is more frightful than was Banquo's ghost to the conscience stricken Ktchard. But affected laughing will not eerva as a bid ding to the ghost to; go down. More substantial than i the ghost of Shakespeare' imagination tho Independent movement will con tinue, grow strength and in the battle will be found to be al!ich mond in the field. ; The ITew York Times S8ya two remarkable discoveries have been made. First, a public creditor who vrefers to have his pay in sils ver dollars; the other, a federal office-holder who has filed.a petition tor a reduction of salary. The latter is an Indian blacksmith at Sacs " and Fox ugency, where the pay 5 3700 yeaily. The former is a colored pensioner. ; - PROF.(?) TIERNAN AGAIN.
