, Miss Isabelle Gray, one of the
oldest and most popular teachers
in the county, has removed to
Heppner, Eastern Oregon, where

During the last few days that
the colonist rates were effective
more than twelve hundred peo
ple came to Oregon on one-way
tickets to make this state their
permanent home,
Dr Hanford, the dentist, was
exceedingly pleasant Wednesday
morning, caused, perhaps, by
the return of Mrs. Hanford who
has-been visiting friends in Port
land for one month.
There is wailing at the home
of Henry Price over the loss of
the family cat that has been
a member of the home for many
years. It strayed away and dil
igent search is now being made.
Tonight at the opera houes
Sol Smit,h Russell's beautiful
comedy-drama "A Poor Rela
tion." This play ran for more
than six months" in New York
" City and it is worthy the atten
tion it is receiving.

that even this is useless people

Marion Wood, a graduate of

20 miles on horseback to see the
game Wednesday. He rejoiced
with exceeding joy when the
boys cleaned up the visitors so
nicely.
The many friends of Mrs. Red
Wells will be pleased to learn
that the serious surgical opera

successful and this very estim
able lady is improving nicely.

Mike Bauer is moving his
residence on 5th between Harri
son and Van Buren across the

Wednesday, Nov. 11, and Mrs.
Mary Smith, of Grants Pass,
president of the State ' Rebekah
Assembly, presided. It was ex
pected that a ' good delegation
would go from the local Rebekah
lodge, but arrangements were
not made to that end.

It would certainly be a com
mendable act on the part of the
city council to establish a uni
form grade for the construction
of cement walks on the various
streets of the city. Many new
walks are now being constructed
and it would materially aid the
builder. It would also avoid
troublesome complications in re
gard to lining up the walks.
Wednesday evening was La
dies' Night at the Commercial
Club and the large' attendance
had a very pleasant time. The
club is now perfecting its plans
to have Corvallis properly rep
resented at Portland on Novem
ber 21, when the big OAC-U. of
O. game . is played, the object
being to root for the college boys
md to boost for Corvallis first,
last and all the time.
Turkeys have been coming in
quite freely during the past few
days and the cruel butcher is
busy putting on the finishing
touches, trimming his whiskers
ready for the market. The price
paid is 16 cents per pound and
many, of the. farmers will go
home smiling with a neat little
sum of money in their pockets.
The turkey certainly has no
cause for rejoicing at the thought
of Thanksgiving day.
Casper Zierolf, of southern
Benton, came home Wednesday.
He attended the Albany Apple
Show and says it made his mouth
water as he stood . and looked at

Now that John W. Kern, of
Indiana, knows that he cannot
become the next vice-president,
he has turned , his attention to a
seat in the United States Senate
and will be a candidate to succeed
James A. Hemenway. As the
Indiana Legislature is democratic L
by 12 on joint ballot, there seems
to be more hope for Mr. Kern to
bury himself in the upper house
than there was of. his playing
second fiddle to Bryan.
