THE CORMLIS GAZETTE Published Tuesdays and Fridays tx the Gazette Publishing Co., for $2.UU per annum, or 25 per cent discount if cash is paid in arivn.nce. Republican National Ticketr FOR PRESIDENT WILLIAM H. TAFT of Ohio. . FOR VICE PRESIDENT JAMES S. SHERMAN of New York." For Presidential Electors J. D. LEE, of Multnomah County F. J. MILLER, of Linn County A. C. MARSTERS, of Douglass County R. R BUTLER, of Gilliam County CHANGED HANDS. With this issue of the Gazette I sever my connection as editor and business manager to be suc ceeded by Mr. Charles L. Spring er, of Washington, who has pur chased the interest of Mr. M. S. Woodcock whom I have had the honor to represent in this com mendable enterprise. In so do ing I desire to express to my friends my deepest sense of ap preciation for the many express ion of good will and hearty sup port given me and sincerely hope the same courtesies may be ex tended to the new management. I kr.ow not what the future has in store for me, but for the pres ent, at If ast, I will still be found laboring hard in hand with Bro. f Drinarer earnestly striving1 to present, for the considerat'on of the public, one of the best local newspapers to be found in the Willamette Valley. Mr. Springer comes to us with an enviable reputation as a citi zen and business man with many years of experience in the news paper business and, although a stranger, he seems peaceably in clined, hence can easily be do mesticated by a liberal advertis ing patronage and adding your name to the subscription list. Very respectfully, W. P. Lafferty. sjj a . , ANNOUNCEMENT. With this issue the manage ment of the Gazette is assumed by the undersigned, whose earn est endeavor it will be to make it deserving of the respect, confi dence and support of all the peo ple of this city and surrounding country. No radical departure will be made, either in policy or politics, nor is it now intended to make any extravagant promises for the future, believing that it will be much more consistent to let trip nnrilif n.irlovi roViorVuvr t Via ra per shall be entitled to its ap- i i . . . .i , pruvai anu patronage, cue oniy positive assertion being that the progress and prosperity of Cor- vallis and Benton county will be its chief aim and constant effort. While now a stranger in this field, it is sincerely hoped that this condition will not long re main, nor be any obstacle to gen eral public patronage, should such be merited, for, in assuming the control of the Gazette, the new management confidently expects io uccurae an HPnvp nnn nppma. nent factor in the business life of Ihe community. Respectfully, Chas. L. Springer. While there may not now be heard the measured tread of mar shalled hosts, the deep booming of heavy artillery 'nbr the sharj rattle of musketry, yet. upon the" issue, the fate of' the country for weal or woe hangs with ; no less certainty than did the perpetuity of the Union ia the crisis - that f marked the eve of Gettysburg during the darkest days of the late civil strife. """ Bloodless though this conflict may be it is equally as bitter in feeling and even more moment ous in effect than any of the san guinary struggles for supremacy that startled the world while the war of the sixties was being fought. - Then it was that the very life of the na ion, the integrity of the republic was at. stake. Now it is the maintenance cf the sacred honor, the wonderful progress the unexampled prosperity and the exalted credit of the greatest country on earth that is being fought for and, as in the past, so at present, is the battle between men who pride themselves upon being Americans. Now their one weapon of warfare is the bal lot, that inalienable right and priceless privilege of every true' citizen and, w hile silent, it is no1 less irresisible arid effective than were the leaden messengers of death in deciding, the fate of the contending armies on many a har J fought field. The battle today is between re publicanism, which represents all that is best in the history of the nation, as against democracy, which stands only for retrogres sion and repudiation, for it is generally accepted as a fact that the guerilla bands of socialism and kindred isms, which hover on the outskirts of the two great armies of voters, cannot he reck- i oned as factors in the cept as they stand ready to prey upon the luckless stragglers from the ranks of either of the princi pal opposing forces. Taft, as the commanding gen eral of the republican hosts, stands in . the van of that great army as its chosen standard bear er and upon his banner is em blazoned every principle, every policy that goes to make a great er America. Bryan, who has repeatedly sought the privilege of leading the democratic forces, and who has as signally been de feated in two previous battles, seeks to enthuse bis followers with specious fallacies and im practicable promises of national reform. The issue of the conflict, how ever, cannot be greatly in doubt, for J;he God of battles, who has upon so . many occasions in the past given victory to the right and made the greatness of this nation possible, will assuredly in this crucial struggle influence the minds and direct the actions of a vast majority of the American electors to the end that justice will prevail, national integrity be preserved and continued prospei ity assured to all the inhabitants of this great country by making certain the election to the presi dency today of William H. Taft. will be inspired with better, purer thoughts and you will feel that you have doneyour'duty towards your neighbor and the beautiful-, little &iiy2 in "which, y o'uvlfve J Mak your 'nedhbor ashamexprf himself by ,sbowiii'g him how clean and neat your home looks. Throughout the length and breadth of the entire country to day there is being waged one of tr e fiercest battles ever fought in the history of the American re public. In every city and hamlet from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from the great lakes to the Gulf the mighty conflict is in progress that shall determine the policy of this great nation for at least four years to come and up on the result of this giant struggle will depend in the larg est measure the commercial life J - :i :. tt. United States. Scarcely a day passes without some letter of inquiry in regard to the Willamette Valley and we receive many requests for pa pers, thus indicating to us that there will be many new ' people seeking homes with us during the coming summer. With the low rate from the east on account of the Seattle Exposition, many will take advantage of the favor able conditions. Let) us make a special effort to improve the golden opportunity afforded us by sending literature everywhere possible. Clean up the falling leaves that look so dreary and desolate around the home; rake off the yard in order that the green grass will have an oppor tunity to grow; put down cement walks instead of that old dilapi dated wooden thing that plays a tattoo in your ears every time a bicycle runs over it, and when you stand , off and look at the transformation scene your soul CONTEST NOTICE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR United States Land Office ..
