Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Wicks leave the first of the week for Cascadia for their outing. A. L. Stevenson and family started Wednesday for the Yac Jiaats for their summer outing. Mr. and Mrs. Lou Rycraft of Alsea were guests Wednesday at the L. H. Hawley home in this city. Charley Young and - family have been moving this week in to their cottage recently vacated by Dr.Handford. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Vidito are moving this week into the residence on Third street just vacated by Charles Peterson and wife. - J. J. Howser, a Gazette sub scriber residing at Blaine, Tilla mook county, is in the city this week sizing up our burg and its attractions. Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Mrs. Lazzie King, wife of the well known mail clerk, who is an old Corvallis bov, was operat ed on in a Portland hospital, Wednesday, for appendicitis. Miss Zeta Johnson returned the first of this week from a visit to her mother in Portland. Mrs. Johnson's health is improving since her operation in a hospital there. Material is on the ground for the new cottage that Mrs. Geo. Brown is to build on her lots, j Norton Adams has the contract j and work will be started- in a few days. Prof. J. C. Bridwell expected to leave yesterday for Hood Riv er and The Dalles on business for the OAC. While absent he expects to make the ascension of Mt. Pasadena, California, on a pleasure trip." Rev. F. B. Zimmerman of Portland, will preach in - the Evangelical church next Sunday morning. During the next three Sundays there will be no services in the church as the members will join in the union meetings. Joseph Edwards of Bellefoun tain and E. . J. Harrington of Corvallis arrived from Portland, Monday, where they had been serving on the U. S. grand jury. S. B.'3ane of this city was re tained on the next case. Miss Cleo Johnson entertained' a dozen friends Tuesday even ing in honor of Miss Jessie Hib ler, of Seattle, who is her guest Music, conversation, and refresh meats were features and a very pleasant evening was spent. The Ed Horton house, on Twelfth street, has been rented by Mrs. Chas. E. Lunt and fam ily, now of Portland, who will move here next week. Mr. Lunt, who is in business in Pittsburg, Pa., is expected to join them in a few weeks. Mrs. C. C. Huff, who is visit ing relatives in Indiana, writes her husband in Corvallis that "there is no place like home and no place for a home like Ore gon." She is anxious to get back to a climate in which she hasno fear of tornadoes or cyclones. Rev. E. E. McVicker, pastor of the Evangelical church, de parted yesterday to attend the campmeeting at Jennings Lodge. The fore part of next week he is to meet and visit in Portland with his brother from Omaha. - Mrs. Emma Hawley, mother of Congressman W. C. Hawley, came up from Salem, Monday, for a visit with relatives. She was met in Corvallis by Mrs. W. F. Starr, her daughter, of Belle fountain, and went on to that place to remain indefinitely. Prof, and Mrs. G. A. Covell have returned from a several weeks' trip East, where Prof. Covell did special work in his line, preparatory to resuming his labors at OAC this fall. The first of August the Covells are to move to College-Hill, where tiiey will occupy the Dr. Gatch property, purchased by them last winter. ' J. C. Evans of near Monroe was thrown from a wagon and severely injured a few days ago, while returning from Junction City. He, was sitting in a chair, behind the seat when the wagon ran into a cnucK-noie ana Mr. Evans was thrown out, alighting j on his head and shoulders. The lungs were turn loose by the fall. The injured man is at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Claude Starr. Mrs. William Schmidt of Cor vallis, who has been in a Port land hospital for three months and has undergone several very serious operations, submitted to the surgeon's knife again last Friday and will be obliged to remain in the hospital for two months longer on account of this operation. Many friends in Cor vallis sympathize with Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt in their trouble. Because of an unexpected change in plans, Rev. and Mrs. Handsaker did not go to Sum mit and Walla Walla: , respective ly, as stated in the last. Gazette, although suchwastheirintention up to the first of the week, lhe arrival of Rev. Hubble, however, .! and the condition of Mr.- Hand- saker's health caused them to de cide to go to Eugene, where they will remain with relatives until the first of September. The large tabernacle tent that , is in service while the Baptist church is being repapered, re painted and otherwise improved, was crowded last Sunday night with the audience that gathered to hear Rev. Davis. An excel lent choir has been organized and is being trained by the pas tor. Next Sunday evening there will be special music, and ser vices morning and evening, ev eryone being invited. - " . The home of Steve Van Order, two and a half miles yst of town was destoyed by fire last . Satur day noon, with all its contents except a bureau, sewing machine, and a few bed clothes. The fire originated from a defective flue in the kitchen. No one was at home except a little girl and her aged grandfather.
