WILL IT BE DONE? T Much has been said as to the ef fort of the nrimarv election law in destroying party organization. It is unquestionably a blow with that intent . because that was thought to be necessary to de throne party "bosses" and de fitrov nolitical rines. So far as the republican party is concerned it has always and everywhere had enough courage, vitality and patriotism to purge and ourify itself without destroy ing or impairing'ita usefulness to the rank and file who cling to its rjrinciples. Were this not true it would belbecause the great mass of republicans, that is the entire nartv. had ceased to care for re publican principles and purposes and had, become as selfish and porriiDt as a few men who had gained mischievous control of the nartv machinery. - Such a conclusion as this would be absolutely false, and it would remain true that, however long and bitter the contest, republi cans have never abandoned their principles to effect purification of nartv conduct. We take it that there are as ma ny republicans in Oregon as at anv time heretofore. We believe that notwithstanding the prima ry law and without disturbing any of its provisions party organ ization can be effected and main ' tained.. If this is not done it will simply be because of the factional sDirit which animates a few leaders, lhese ino- tntrfither make the value of the crop greater than usual, and well illustrates the economic law that "supply and demand fix the price of, commodities . But; after all, 'the export de mand for wheat and flour, was in value only about $150,000,000. Thi o-ives f400.000.000 as the value to the farmer of the home market for his wheat. Here is a demonstration, so far as it goes, of the value or cne home market above all toreign mnrtcets combined. Were we to consider other farm products for which there is little or no demand for export the value of the home market to the farmer is greaciy enhanced. If we seek to know why this market is so valuable we shal firJ the reasons are that it pre sents a crreater demand and by consumers who are better able and more willing to pay for what they buy than any other market in the world Consumption - 01 those commodities we do.not pro duce depends almost entirely on. our ability to purchase them from the producer. It follows, tnen, that the rjrosperity of the farmer largely depends on the ability of those engaged m pursuits ; otner than farming to buy the farmer's nroducts. Anything which will create and preserve this ability is to his benefit Now some careless writers, moved bv hatred for protection. would have farmers believe tnat if consumers of farm products miVht avail themselves ot dom ing and other necessities of life which are cheap in foreign coun tries but hisrh in this country they would be better able to pay thei farmer high prices for his prod ucts. This is a lame conclusion, truly. Smith, who already buys all the flour, pork and beans he can consume buys a suit of foreign made clothing for $20, for which his neighbor Jones, the tailor, $3U. Smith has now $10 more to ex pend in farm products, but he does not increase his purchases because he already buys all he remiires. It is plain that Jones io Mn less able to buy anything, vj . , . and that the purchasing aDinty of several other Americans is de creased in the aggregate by $20. Writers in the interest of free- trade should not assume that far mers are ignoramuses. liio-h crrade gold and sil verore shipped from Fallon than ever originated at one poinc,,in the, history oi mmiug. . - Nevada is not a blot on the map.
