We Want Your Business Hodes Grocery Verdict for Dr. Pierce AGAINST XHB Ladies' Home Journal. Sending truth after a lie. It ts an old maxim that "a lie will travel seven leagues while truth Is getting its boots on," and no doubt hundreds of thousands of good people read the unwarranted and malicious attack upon Dr. R. It was boldly charged in the sland erous and libelous article that Dr. Pierce'l Favorite Prescription, for the cur of -woman's weaknesses and ailments, con tained alcohol aud other harmful ingredi ents. Br. Pierce promptly brought suit against the publishers of the Ladies Bsme Journal, for $200,000,00 damages. Preparations are about complete for the annual winter short courses at the Oregon Agricultural Col lege, and this vear the scope of the work has been so enlarged that farmers, fruitgrowers, dairy men, mechanics and even the teachers of the State will be af forded an exceptional opportuni ty for self-improvement. Thee short courses have been Siven at O. A. C. for the past ten years, with ever-increasing inter est, and the benefits to be derived are now so generally recognized that the demand for the short courses comes from many classes. Many farmers who have fol lowed this line of work for years are glad of an opportunity to learn Hew and better methods than those with which they are familiar, and no better way of af fording them the opportunity has been found than that of the farm ers' institute and the winter short courses. Beginning January 7th, next, the following will begin at O. A. C: . 1. General Agriculture, two weeks. Dairying, six weeks. Horticulture, six weeks. Mechanic Arts, six weeks. Household Science, six weeks. ' Forestry, six weeks. The course in Mechanical Arts will consist entirely of practical work in the shop or in the draughting room; the other courses will consist of a series of lectures, supplemented by dero- ous'nations and by practical exer cises in the dairy, the orchard. the labora..or"es or the domestic science rooms. The work offered will mset the eve. yday needs of farme-s, dairymen, fruit growers, mechanics and of the women in Ihe ho It is also the belief t'rat 'cch-eis, who are required now to teach elementary agricul ture in the school room, may be greatly benefitted by attending the short course in general agri culture. lne U. A. (J., in this manner affords a rare opportunity for farmers and others to gain many new and helpful ideas to aid them is tneir wo.k, and there is no doubt that the attendance this year from all parts of the state wm eclipse that ot all previous years. CHOICE IMPORTATIONS Thorough-Bred Stock For Oregon Herds--Many for Corvaliis. Editor of the Rural . Spirit "We are. seaong out. to your beautiful country two cars double decks, of legistered Lin- colns, bhropshires, Hampshires and South Down sheep. Most of the consignment consists of Lincolns and 101 of these go to J. is. btump, of Monmouth, 55 to M. S. Woodcock, of Corvaliis. 25 Hampshires to A. J. Johnson Corvalli- ; 2 Delaine lambs to R. W. Caiey. Salem ; 6 Delaines P. Patton, Gaston; 1 Shropshire ram lamb for John Schapp ; 1 Shrop shire lamb tor Chas. Cleveland, and two South Downs for Hub bard. These sheep are of our own se lection and we are in no way asnamea that they are going to breedeis or long standing and good judgment. We know these sheep are going to a better sheep country than they ever saw and feel confident under their owners skill will piove an addition of new blood for your country. We caa't say they are better sheep than you can raise for no bettet long wool- sheep can be raised anywhere than are raised in your beautiful coast country.' The shorter or medium wooled breeds will no doubt ; prove themselves wortnjr. r my 01 tneae Lincoln ewes are enoice Klactieas froa the mast noted flocks in Canada and are di rect descendan ts from the famous Duddiag and Dean flocks ot Eng land, These 50 ewes go to M. Woodcock of Cofvallis, who says he is starting In with the ' inten tion of breeding the best, and no doubt in a few years will have much better sheep, than he can get in the East or anywhere else. ' Mr. Stump's collection consists of the entire flock of A. , D. Mc- Gugan, of Canada, consisting of 65 ewes -from one to three years old, and 35 ewe lambs and the imported Dean ram. These sheep are direct descendants f:ora selec tions made from the Duddihg flock at Riddy grove in 1900 and are all a very choice lot and it was fortunate for Mr. Stump that we could get these high class sheep for him as Canadian breed ers were very anxious for selec tions from this flock at most any price. Mr. Woodcock gets two ram lambs out of this flock which if they were now at Riddy Grove would bring $1,000 each. A. A. Bates, . Pres. A. A. Bates Pure Bred Sheep Commission Co.', Irwin, O The above communication is from the last issue of the Rural Spirit, and is self explanatory. It shows the foothold that the pure bred stock industry has se cured in this section of Oregon, ana now "scrub" stock is giving place to the thoroughbred. Fred Stump, mentioned in the article, is an O. A. C. graduate who is meeting with splendid suc cess in the stock business. HIS NEW STEAMBOAT. To Ply on Willamette River A Big Undertaking The Plan. Woiie was started ivionaav on a new steam Doat that is to be built tor use on the Willamette river between Eugene and Port land. The builder is R. J. In Canada Mr. Galbreath oper ated a coal mine, and previous to that had twelve years' experience in steamboating on the great lakes. The site where the new boat is being constructed is on the river bank, two miles trom Corvaliis, where launching will be easv when the craft is complete. In size the boat will be 70x16 The pipe boiler is being made in Chicago and the bo-horse power engine is to be made at the Al bany Iron Works. The steamer will be used for both freight aud passenger service, and sMr. Gal breath has perfect confidence in the success of his undertaking, It will be several months before the b:g boat is completed and its growth will be watched with much interest by Corvallisites, Al Kemp is assisting Mr. Gal breath with the work. L'l s "B- - Hu." and "The Pass 1 Pl -v" this reproduction, to ev rtd ear of the culmination f the life of Christ is more reverent in spirit, both from the standpoint of the audience and behind the scenes, than ate the utterances from many a pulpit. As the theatrical has invaded the pulpit often m the high pla ces, so is "The Holv City" the e t dramatic storv, that is the cornerstone of Christian belief has sought the stage and through this medium has brought home its lessons to thousands that the churches do not reach. Let no one express an opinion of such p'ys until one has seen a produc. tion with his or her own eyes. A child will learn more of the lite of Christ, be he Genule or Jew, Christian or unbeliever, in two hours at "The Holy City" than he will in an ordinary Sunday school in a year. 'The Holy City" tells its story in the same spirit lha.. Raphael and Michael An gel o painted their master pieces. Viewed from whatever stand point one wishes "The Holy Ci y" is one of the best prodnc f'o is that has come to Ibis city iu months. Historically it is cor rect in scen y and costume, and follows almost literally the story as told in the Bible. Artistically there is not a poor player in the piece. The best work is done by Lu- ella Morey as Salome, the Cleo patra-like daughter of King Herol. -Kely intelligent, subtle in the snake-like ways of the Ori eatul, she looks, acts and thinks the part. Walter M. Sherwin's John lne Baptist and his Judas .e m striking contrast, tor he 1 p'ays these Lwo parts equally well. The remainder of the cast played their parts with finished skill, and their costumes were perfect. No living character represented the Nazarine. Hts presence was indicated, as in Ben Hur, by a flood ot light from the wings, and two cases by reproductions of the masterpieces of Michael Angelo. The music throughout was iu keeping with the spirit ot the play. If all the churches were as historically correct, as intensely d amatic and as true and reverent in spirit as is "The Holy City" there would be fewer empty pews and a wider knowledge ot the Bi ble and a truer appreciation of its teachings." This most excellent attraction will be seen here next Thursday n'sht. The management takes pleasure in recommending it as a thoroughly high-class production.
