St vies have' been hoping that President Roosevelt would finally be Dersuaded to dissolve his resolution not to again be a can didate for the presidency and accept another term. . It now looks as though such hopes were futile. Roosevelt is said to be fur- -thering the interests of Taft an d doing all he can for him in a quiet .way. This certainly looks as though Roosevelt were determined to stand by his reso lution just-after his election when he issued a statement to the effect that under no conditions would he accept another term as president, ui course ne is in a position to greatly assist another man to the place and, from all reports, is assisting his friend, Taft. Taft may be all very well, b ut we doubt if he will prove the equal of Roosevelt who could, for that matter? Taft may be capable and of as honest inten tion as any man, but it is more than doubtful if he possesses courage in so high a degree to give battle for what he deems right, regardless of whom he may injure. Few men in the history of the world have proved themselves such champions of rijjht for right's sake as Roose velt, still in Mr. Taft we may have another such champion. No mar. can say until the- matter has been put to the test. In case he is the choice of the people I next year Mr. Taft may make good in fine shape. Let us hope so if he is selected to wear Roose velt's mantle. We recall the fact that a few years ago when Theodore Roose velt was nominated for the vice presidency there was more than a little consternation in the aver age republican mind and not a few were inclined to look upon said nomination as a calamity. If Mr. Taft is to be president it is to be hoped that he will prove just such a calamity as Mr. Roosevelt has been. NOTHING DOING. For some six or eight weeks the universal peace congress has been in session at The Hague. The men composing the confer ence are supposed to be leading lights and heavy weights in the world's affairs, but so far as the accomplishment of anything to assure peace is concerned there is little or nothing to be proud of. Men may cry "Peace!" but there is no peace. To get to gether a body of men for the dis cussion of matters relating to the re., ulntion of war does not insure peace. In the history of the world there has never been a! period when peace could be as-' sured even for a short time. It J is an impossibility. Even the' making of rules of war will do little good if they are not of such a nature that the civilization and general enlightenment of the I warring parties are not in sym pathy with them for humanitarian reasons. That nation which is best able to protect itself in case of war is more secure in its desires for peace than a nation too weak to protect itself from the ravages of a stronger power. When two nations are determined upon war all The Hagues and peace con gresses in Christendom will be powerless to prevent, or even de lay it. From what we can learn The Hague is a real nice place for a summer outing. The govern ments foot the bill and those who are so fortunate as to be in the saddle have a picnic This is about the size of the matter, look at it from aDy standpoint. Additional Local. Thomas Callahan spent Sunday at the coast with bis wife. R. H. Huston and family retaraed Sunday night from a two weeks' onling at Elk City. " Earl Heckart of this city is now holding second position in the Portland Journal's educational contest, and his energy is certainly to be commended by all. Every citizen who needs a Portland daily paper should rally to the support of this yonng "bustlei" and help bin to secure a scholarship. True pluck and ambition merit reward. The Gazette acknowledges the receipt of a neatly printed pamphlet on tlic question,, "Did Sir Francis Drake land on any part of the Oregon Coast." The writer is E. M. Brereton, C. E.,who sends the pamphlet with bis compli ments. Mapr t E. Fdwards left Corvallis, yesteraav. for San Luis Obispo, Cali fornia, where he will have charge of the , Chemistry department of the California Polytechnic Cdlege. For years the gentleman has been a professor in the State Agricultural College located in tbie city and has proved his efficiency beyond question. As a man and a scholar tle Major ranks high and we feel that San Luis Obispo is to be congratulated o i the acqnisition. Many friends in this section, whiie sorry to see Major Edwards depart, wish him unbounded success in his new field. William Leadbetter arrived home, Sat" urday, from a trip to Portland. Misses Mae and Elate Gerhard returned from their outing at the coast, Sunday j evening, and Con Gerhard went over, to oin his f amily. G e ore MeWillis of Fossil, Oregon, was in Corvallis over Sunday, driving a lot of b nneh grass horses. He left here for Toledo. - At Suver, en route to Corvallis, some oi me norses nroKe away and in running under a brides to bead them off, Mr. McWillis struck a timber or a nail, cutting a gash about three inches long and severing an artery. In spite of the wound, which bled profusely, the injured man came on to this city alone, and Dr. Parnot caught up the artsrv and sewed up the gash. LETTER LIST.
