WJBRS WILL IT END? This appears to be an era of labor strikes. All over the ILiit-e-l States men who lab r and are aiJiliated with trade unions are going on a strike. Let us con sidar the matter seriously and note as best we are able the con ditions at present and hazar 1 a guess at what the end is to b3. In the first place all of our sympathies go to the working m m so long as he is in ihe riirht. But at the present tim? it 13 a noteworthy fact that labor, o i the average, was never bat ter paid. The laboring man who is worthy of his hire need nor be idle for want of a position, and at a respectable stipend, too. Bat the hog seems in the little fallows an well as the big ones for the demand is for more and mire money and shorter hours hore, there, and everywhere. The working man is entitled to fair compensation and this com pensation must accrue from the profits of the business which the working man helps to create- No m itterjhow much or how little t le working man demands for his labor if this demand be in excess of the profits to his em ployer it cannot be allowed and the laborer demanding: more wages mast be replaced by ; cheaper man. If there be ; union back of all this and ; strike is ordered then the busi ness shuts down. The proprietor cnn better afford to go out of Isusines than to conduct it at a lo-ss. When it com:;s to' the gams or starve out" the man of means must in reason be expect ed to have the best of it. There is a scarcity of labor everywhere and this makes wages good, but when priaes for labor become excessive there must be retardation of genera' advancement and depression fol lows Close observation has made clear the fact that in soma instances men who were never ia all their lives so well paid have recently gone on strikes for still greater remuneration and shorter hours. Such a policy is ruinous, not alone to the capital nts of the country but to the mm who must labor for the sup port of himself and family. With all honor to the working man, in order to maintain the sympathies of the thinking pub lio he must be reasonable in his demands. Let these demands be just and on right lines and a good healthy sentiment will back him up. There must eventually be an end to this strike business as it is worked today. It must result in such a manner as to dis gust the better class within the trade unions and then conditions will a?ain become as they were before the birth of unionism, by which is provided a job for some addle-headed boss. Let the laborer be fair in his demands and also demand that the capitalist do the right thing The interests of capital and la bor are identical. The laborer is but a leech on a rich man it cannot be otherwise. Today it seems a case, to use a slangy ex pression, of "dog eat dog." Where will it end? Invitations have jast been received by Cjrvalli8 friends to the wedding of Miss Ve Etta Jones and Mr. Fred Bradlev The affair tikes place in Salem at the linde'd borne at high noon, May lat. Miss Jones is well known and highly espected in Corvallis, where she has epent considerable time in the capacity of trained nurfe, and many friends sin cerely wish her all possible happiness. Th" Oregon Development Iveague tbrougn its secretary, lom Ktctiardson, is urging the co-operation of all the towns in the Willamette Valley in tht movement to advertise Oregon in the East, especially to secure in creased im migration during the petiod that the low colonist rates are operative. The last letter sect out by the League urges that ministers be ! rtquesteJ to make announcement 1 irom their pulpits in regard to these rates, and that teachers be asked to put the matter before the schools. The letter goes on t say : Every resident of Oregon should at once m ke it his or her personal duty to write a letter to some acquaintance, relative or friend, or better still to some old home paper, advising that the colouist rates will expire April 30th; there is no time to lse. These are one-way Ta'es and good to almost any point in Ore gon. Hon.
