D. C Rise has been engaged this week in spraying his big prune and apple orchard west of town. This orchard is in prime condition and promises an abundant crop next fall. The rumor is current in Salem that Willamette University is to have a new building for the college of music to cost $15,000, and anoth er rumor is that auother building for the oarapui-, to ost $50,000 So fir, they are but rumors. Judge W. S. McPadden, of Cor- val'is, is in the city attending court. A petition is being freely signed in the city to have tLe judge appointed prosecuting attornev for ibis judicial distri ;t as provided for by an act of the last legislature. Eugene Regis ter. Sidney Smith went to Corviillis yesterday, to watch the basketball game between the Crescents five of Chicago and the OAC team. Sid has a soft spot for basketball and makes a splendid manager. Eu gene Register. It is expected that construction work on the independent telephone system in Corvallis will be com pleted tomorrow and the men go from this city to Albany to work for two weeks. At the end of that time the gang goes to Salem, where it is probable there will be con struction work for a year. At a joint meeting of the Linn council and seven granges, held at Sand Ridge a fpw days ago, it was resolved that "We favor the estab lishment of independent blacksmith , shops by the farmers for the pur-' pose of avoiding paying trust prices and working upon the principle of "Live and let Live." W. A. Buchanan has been ap pointed administrator of the estate of William Thomas, deceased. There is real property estimated at $500, and personal property valued at $600, all in Benton county, and the wife and six children are the heirs. Lincoln Chambers, C. Reed and Sam Kerr have been appointed ap praisers. Special revival services wi'l be gin at the M. E. church, South, next Sunday, March 10th. The pastor will preach, Sunday, on the following subjects: 11 a. m., "The Holy Spirit;" 7:30 p. m., "The Up lifted Saviour." Rev. E. B. Jones will reaoh Corvallis, Monday, and preach each evening through the week. All are cordially invited to attend these services. Henry Wortham has been visit ing friends at Long Tom this week. County court has been in session this week, the usual grist of bills being disposed of Wednesday. Miss Bessie Irvine left Wednes day for Brown -ville for a two weeks' visit with her brother, J. D. Irvine, and family. The Chicago Crescent five defeat ed the Dallas basketball team by the score of IS to 14, in Dallas, Tuesday evening. James Kelly, of OAC, returned Tuesday from his home at Lents, Oregon, where be was called about two weeks ago to attend to busi ness matters.;' - Frank Cole ind family have leased the Clarence Vidito house, near th saw mill, and will occupy it in a few days. Mr. and Mrs. John Kiiwr have gone to their island ranch, where they will spend two or three weeks, spraying their fruit trees and doing other necessary spring work. W. C. Metcalf and Sm Dixon are expected to return tomorrow from Davton, where they have been the pist few days, looking at real estate, with a view to purchasing, Charles Butler, of Portland, has been in Corvallis, this : wek, look ing for horses, and Wednesday a number were taken by boat to the metropolis, Mr. Butler having sue ceeded in his search. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Vidito de parted for Newport, Wednesday, where they are to reside and engsge in operating the cay View hotel for the summer in partnership with Clarence Chipman. A nother popular musical event is to take place in the college chapel on Saturday evening, March 16th. It is a recital by tbe pupils of the school or Music, and will begin promptly at 8:30 o'clock. The Presbyterian Ccristian En deavor young peop held a busi ness meeting and social at the home of Miss Mary Sutherland, Tuesday eveniog, which was enj yed by quite a crowd of members and friends of the society. Mr. and Mis. D. D. Pittman cele brated the 15th anniversary of their marriage at their home in this city a few days ago. About 25 . guests enjoyed the occasion, and many bf-autnul presents were bestowed on the host and hostess in honor of the event. Monday and Tuesday the county clerk was bvsy attending to pension paperB for the old soldiers, 44 sets ot papers being presented on Mon day. Blackledge, on a recent trip to Portland, invested in ral estate, purchasing three lots in Jiaet Port land on the Vancouver car line. Property of all kinds in the metrop olis is advancing by "jumps," and there is a remarkable building boom on, just now. Miss Nora Miller is several thous and votes ahead in this, the eighth district, of tbe Telegram contest work, and it now seems probable thatshe mey enjoy a free trip to the Jamestown Exposition as a guest of tne Telegram. She secures her votes by getting subscriptions, and her friends are standing by her loy ally in the race.
