Reid, of Milwauttie, is arranging -for a series of meetings at various places in Clackamas county,. and will be at Maple Lane Thursday, December 28, and at Milwaukie Friday, December 29. : Mrr Reid will be accompanied by Prof. Kent, Government officials and state officials of the land department are much concerned over the whereabouts of S. A. D. Puter, Horace ; G. . McKinley, Marie Ware and Emma L,. Watson, all of land-fraud fame, both Federal and State. The bondsmen of each are also looking with long ing eyes upon the effi rts being made by the authorities to dis cover the fugitives, and are wait ing with anxious ears to hear ef their location. Indicted in the Federal Court on general counts, under sentence ot conviction in the tamous 'n 7" land fraud case, which opened the Oregon land-fraud drama and under bonds oi $4,000 in each other instance, tne now doubly tamous land sharks are much wanted persons, though the presumption holds that it will require the united efforts of both the Government secret ser vice and of the Land Department agents to locate the elusive criminals and bring them back to the state for punishment and justice. ' ' . ,: v The Government Secret Ser vice Department is co-operating with the state officials in an, at tempt to locate Puter, McKinley, Watson and Ware. All of them seem to have dropped , so " com pletely out of sight that even Dan Tarpley, in palmy days their shadow, and in some mat ters their confederate, has lost track of them and cannot tell where they are. Horace McKinley has gone to Tapan, according to the latest slory, and the supposition is that Puter is not far away. Mc Kin- ley has been leading a will-o'- the-wisp life for the greater part of the time since bis honeymoon has waxed' and waned. .Some weeks ago he was seen in The Dalles, where he was making inquires concerning many per sons, many 01 them Holders ot state land certificates, the others presumably those whom he would like to have hold the papers. Since the trip to The Dalles, McKinley has not been seen. It is reported that he went to Seat tle from the city on ; the Colum bia and from there to the East, Since then, however, nothing has been heard directly of him. - MCK.iuiey was convicted in the Federal Court before Judge Bellinger in the "11-7" case of having defrauded the Govern ment out of public lands. ' For the offense he was never sentenc ed, the judgment having been suspended oxiag to the fact that all of the defendants with the ex- cepl;ion of - Marie Ware turned state's evidence. Bonds were set by the Court at - $4,000 and these were furnished after some delay. : v' ': - Marie Ware has also been hav ing a traveled ana. troubled ex perience since her marriage - to wicis-iniey. some montns age After the marriage in Chicago Mr. and Mrs. McKinley came to Portland and alter a short visit here, returned to the JBast again They made a visit to La Crosse where some time was spent wit McKinley's relatives. - Afte that they returned to - Seattle. where they resided, for a partof the time at the Etherton. Both mr. ana - Mrs. Mctuniev were seen as late as September las Chicago. After the Ciiic trip, however, the couplt; return ed to Seattle, from which place they' seem to have dropped out of sight. Puter, throughout the summer, made - his headquarters at Chi cago. From the statements of George K. Hibbard, one of those implicated in the Oregon state land deals, Puter - was also at Grand Rapids - during the fall. He has not-' been west of: the Cascade " Mountains for weeks. It is thought that he will perhaps to know where his associates are. Mrs. Emma L Watson, an-l other of the convicted ones, is ost. She has not been heard from by the Federal officers since immediately after her conviction. It is probable that she has kept in communication whh Puter and McKinley, even though the Secret Service officers are after her." - , , All of the quartet were and are now under federal indictment, Ail out mane L,. Ware was proved - to be connected with the nrst land-fraud case, the famous "i i-7" contention. au were indicted under what is known as the "$2000 indictment," and on this are out on, $4000 bonds. Since the gigantic swindles in state land certificates have been brought to light, the state au thorities are eagerly looking for Puter and McKinley, especially, while the government would like to see all of the four as their cases will soon be before the Fed eral court. Officers . from each, department of the government are now working haad-in-hi nd to find some clue as to'the where- ct per word for each additional inser tion.
