A good, consistent relieion will not harm any people and what we propose saying here is not to he considered as a fling at what may be termed "true religion," nor 13 it desired to injure the feelings of any of our people. It is with a view to protecting the interests and welfare of our com munity that we propose to touch on a tew things. " A couple of days ago unpleas ant recollections were brought to mind by the sound "of Salva tionists' cornet and drum on our streets. If these men have any knowledge of the outgrowth of former Armies in this city they are certainly brazen in their at tempt to again inflict themselves upon us. They are aware of the enenviable reputation and notor lery that was ours because we were the hotbed of "Holy Roller- ism." ' -. - - WEAKNESS OF TARIFF REFORM. ' These Massachusetts Republi cans still call themselves Pro tectionists and affect a fine scorn of what they speak of ( as the Democratic Doctrine of Free- Trade, yet they asked for a larger measure of Free-Trade than'any Democrats would ' be willing to consent to. They want free raw materials and free coal for their factories, and that means f ree hides,sf ree wools, free iron and free wood pulp. Out in Iowa Governor Cum mins has long been known as favoring a measure of Tariff re ; form; but he would no doubt ob y ject to free wool and free hides. The West generally would ob ject to both; but the West wants a reduction of the duties on manufactured goods, to which Massachusetts would object. The difference is this: Massa , ehussstts wants to buy cheap wool and hides and sell clothing and shoes at high prices. The West , would lik3 to sell wool and hides at the best possible prices ' and buy cheap tothing and shoes. Tii3i 3 is a great variety of local interests operating in the same eontrary fashion all over the country, and that is why the Tariff reformers cannot get to gether and why the Tariff reform sentiment is always weaker than it would appear to be from the noise it makes.
