On account of certain preju dices aroused in China, more largely in Shanghai than else where, the children of the celes tial kingdom now propose to boy cott the United States. In fact, the boycott is already on, if one is to believe reports. By this action there is lit tle doubt but the United States will lose, but China will suffer more largely than we will in the long run. We- have been send ing China great quantities of ma terials and goods of various char acter each year and at most rea sonable figures. Considering the quality of our exports, our prices could not be met by any country in Europe, and this has aroused the jealousy of Germany, Eng land and France. China is now ; playing into the hands of these peoples. The Chinese now claim to be indignant over the matter of the exclusion of themselves from this country. They fancy their dig nity has been hurt. This senti ment is more largely due to the attitude of the San Francisco la bor unions than any other cause. While they may not be aware of the fact, they are playing right into the hands of the Frisco unionists, for in boycotting this country they antagonize elements known to be friendly to the in stitution of a new treaty between this country and China a treaty whereby China was to receive more liberal terms for certain classes of her subjects, such as students, merchants, travelers, scientists and the like. - So far as throwing down the bars to countless millions of China's coolie element is concern ed, it is safe to predict that this country will never act with such madness. Any Mongolian seek ing to bring such a state of af fairs about by aiding and abett ing the scheme of our European rivals may as well save himself the effort. An open door for Chinese offscourings ! Never. AS NOW PLANNED. There is something unusual in the attitude of some leading poli ticians throughout the state re garding the primary election law. Here is a law that some of our leading statesmen are striving to defeat even before it has been tried. It is now proposed to hold conventions in the same old way. What is gained by the passage of a law that is never given a fair trial ? The intent of the primary law is to give all a square deal. Such being the case, the scheme of certain leaders ap pears to be to defeat that which was intended as fair for all es pecially before the primary sys tem has been tried "and found - wanting. . , The people have a right under the circumstances to be suspi cious, for the attitude of these leaders excite belief that the de feat of a just lav is the end sought. With so many of our - leading office-holders and other men of wide acquaintance in the state under indictment at pres ent, one is forced to the convic tion that corruption is rampant and the time is ripe for the peo ple to raise their voices. No man seeking to defeat the pri mary law before it has had a fair trial is going to strengthen him self with the public. This law may be a bad one, but the proper and upright thintp do is to give it a trial. - Lost. Sunday evening on the Corvallis-Soap creek road, a lady's plaid jacket. It is to be open only to members of the club and in choosing new members the club will use the ballot system of othrr social or ders. The club and order of run ning the smie is patterned after the Arlington Club of Portland. Ech member will be assessed regularly pay dues the same as he would in any order . he might join. He will have a locker to which he will nolo the key and it is claimed that what he may have in the locker is a matter wholly of his own business. A steward will be in attendance at all times to look after the interest and welfare of the members. There are said to be in the neighborhood of 75 or 100 char ter members. It is the intention to allow nobody admission to the club who are known as chronic "drunks." In this matter no attention is being paid to the charter law or authority of Cor vallis. The club is incorporated and will be run in accordance with the laws of the State of Oregon. The club is now ready to accept new members. Have Incorporated. For some time in the past the college Y M C A and various students and citizens have in terested themselves in the matter of securing a student building at the college. In this endeavor they have encountered and over come many obstacles and it now seems that their efforts are to bear fruit. Friday, articles of incorpora tion of the Student Building Asso ciation of the State Agricultural College of Oregon were filed with Clerk Moses. The incor porators are E. R. Lake, Arthur G. B. Bouquet and C. L. Shepard. "The object of the incorporation snail be the erection, equipment and management of a student building at the State Agricultur al College of Oregon." " I he value of all property possessed by the incorporation at the time of filing articles was placed at $12,000. The articles further state that the building is to be located on college land. . The building as proposed is in tended for many purposes: a set of bath rooms, a gymnasium, a number of rooms for the various college societies, a general as sembly room and a place lor re Hgious services. In lact, many uses are planned for the building. When work of construction will begin is not yet determined so far as we have been able to learn: Hpllenberg & Cady donated to the W. C. T.
