The most strenuous republican among all men is President Roose velt. He is rugged and blunt in his purpose, but at all times hon est. Honesty is written in every word he utters. All of his con sideration is for the good of his people' as a whole not for any particular class. So apparent is this that the people feel and acknowledge it to the fullness of their ability. . One of the greatest battles fought by any man in years is that of President Roosevelt in his endeavor to secure just rates from the railroads of this great republic for and in behalf of the common people, it required no small amount of courage to do this; it required not alone atnor ugh understanding of the mat ter of railroad regulation, but the ability to see far into the fu ture and discern possible impedi ments in such a course. It is noteworthy that in every utterance of 'the president there js apparent the determination to do the right thing not only by 'the common people, but by those who own and control the rail roads. In a recent speech made in Colorado President Roosevelt stated that the . great common wealth had been served in a de gree far beyond estimation by the railroad men in times past. They made connection of the At lantic with the Pacific; they . builded into undeveloped regions; by the investment of their capi- tai, tneir energy, tneir genius, it . - and emDlovment of srreat Derse- verauce uiey puiceu tiie peoyie 1.1 i j it. i -of the United States to a great extent in their debt. In- view of all this President " Roosevelt is just as anxious that in the matter of regulation no injustice be done these men as that they shall cease oppressing the ueonle. The debt of the people has been paid. In the , matter of railway regulation the people of every political faith are with the president. -The one great obstacle is tne u. b. sen ate. Will it dare hold out against both president and people in an issue of such vital importance? It scarcely seems likely.' One would naturally guess Teddy, backed as he is by the people, to win. But justice must be done so nearly as possible to each and every, one. " Home-Seekers. The common council of the City of Corvallis met in regular monthly session last Monday evening. No business of any great importance was transacted Bins were auowea on the gen eral fund in the sum of $351.80; on the street tund to the amount of $144.40. An ordinance was passed pro hibiting merchants and others from depositing their wares on the sidewalks along Main street. Bicycle racks are also to be re moved from the sidewalks; in fact; anv obstruction whatever is strictly prohibited. . There .was some discussion re gardmg matters pertaining to the fire limits of the city as re gards dilapidated buildings. The matter came up over the advis ability of allowing Dave Irvin to repair his building on South Mam street, work having been suspended by the fire chief. On this matter the council was some what divided. Some of the coun- cilmeri contend that the present ordinance regulating matters oi building and repairs within the limits are top stringent and offer in support of their argument that it is better fot all concerned that buildings be repaired than that they be forced to remain in a state of dliapidation. ; ; New Partnership.
