A Teacher's Testimony.
Hinton, Ky., Nov. 28 (Special) It
has long been claimed that Diabetes is
incurable, but Mr. E. J. Thompson,
teacher in the Hinton school, has pleas
ing evidence to the contrary. Mr.
Thompson had Diabetes. He took

which the British Admiral Drake sank the Spanish galleons, after pursuing
them to the Spanish coasts. Vigo has a fortress and the town Is surrounded
by a wall and trenches. The older part of the town is a picturesque Jumble
of quaint, white walled, red roofed houses, rising up and up over against
each other and a background of rocky greenery. These roofs are a study
In themselves, looking over each other's heads, into each other's windows,
and almost down each other's chimneys, all balconied and galleried, and

of the under sheet are carefully
pinned to the under side of the mat
tress with safety pins. Draw the

Sufferers from rheumatism should
dress entirely In woolen clothing, and
dust the Inside of their clothing with
flour of sulphur. They should abstain
from taking beer, acids, sweets, .sugar,
or pastry, but should take plenty of
milk, celery stewed in milk, or pre
pared In other ways, and onions. They
should rub the joints night and morn
ing with a brine of salt, rubbing It in
until the skin Is dry. Turkish baths
do much good to rheumatic persons,
but, being a severe remedy, should
never be tried without first consulting
a medical man, or the result may be
most Injurious.
It is not generally known that cas
tor oil may be most easily taken min
gled with orange juice, a little sugar
being added if the juice of the orange
is not sweet. The difference between
this and any other mode of taking this
valuable medicine is surprising. Into
a very thin glass a portion of juice
should be squeezed; then the oil
should be poured upon this and more
juice should be squeezed upon the oil.

between the two layers of orange
juice. If .the edge of ' the glass is
rubbed with orange, the fruit will be
the only thing tasted as the dose slides
down the throat.

As is only to be expected, consider

the physique of the natives of India
will" not compare with an English
man's, though they possess a litheness
of form and quickness of eye that we
lack, and which makes them among
the finest gymnasts and Jugglers iu
the world. Such perfect balancing
powers have they that, even supposing
them bereft of the tenacious grasp of
foot possessed by all barefooted races,
there would still be left much to ad
mire in their skill. No contortion
seems too difficult for them, no bar too
slight or smooth to be negotiated, no
height can try their nerves, and no
standing ground appears too small.
Even a slip Is of little consequence to
such clever tumblers; they seem to
have all the climbing powers of a cat.
As runners their staying powers is
most remarkable; a dakwallab deems
the task of running twenty miles a
mere trifle.
It Is strange that in games pure
and simple they do not display the
same excellence, though the cricket of
the Parsees is meritorious. Of other
native pastimes the one which may
cause the most surprise is football, as
It seems essentially a game fitted for
northern climates only. Yet It is not
merely played, but played rather ex
tensively, considering Its somewhat
recent Introduction into the country.
Its growing popularity Is still more
surprising on aeocunt of the bard na
ture of the ground and the heat of the
atmosphere, conditions which scarcely
favor either the playing or players.

ulations are in force, but the natives

'As footballers they are fafrty fast

fortunately their lack of muscular
stamina would tell against them If
ever they should chance to encounter
an English team of professionals.
Some native players are Individually
really good, very speedy, very keen,
and, what is more important, they
pass well and seem to realize the sci
entific side of the game. As yet these
are few and far between; the kick
and-rush game, intermingled with
dribbling, Is more common. Still their
progress has been remarkable, and
with European influence the rest may

How Toko's Nerves Were Steadied.
Admiral. Togo, commander-in-chief of
the Japanese navy, whose prowess as a
fighting man has won world-wide
praise of late, comes from an old
school of Nippon warriors. His naval
education is of the best, and he has
been trained in every way to be a
fearless, calm, and tireless fighter.
. In his youth, he and his fellow stu
dents at the Japanese naval academy
were accustomed to attend an annual
banquet. They sat at a circular table
around a slowly revolving cannon load
ed with a ball and trained to the level
of their heads. The trigger was so
arranged that it could be touched from
a hidden source outside of the banquet
hall. That at some time during the
banquet the cannon would be fired
every one at the table knew; but Just
when, or in what direction it would
be polntingwas a mystery. Of course,
there was a possibility that the ball
might crash harmlessly between tha
heads of two banqueters, but it was
equally probable that it might carry
off the head of some student. Yet no
one flinched. The chances were equal
to all.
The picturesque obect of destruction
revolving during the jovial hours of
the banquet, pointing from student to
student, and ready at a given moment
to blow any one of them to pieces, was
considered in Japan admirable training
to steady the nerves of a fighting man.

Bought a Farm to Own a Tree.
' All the country knows , Ellhu Root,
the lawyer, man of affairs, and cabinet
officer, but there are less-known sides
to his make-up which are, perhaps,
more indicative of the man himself,
and which are, too, more Interesting
for the very reason that they are less
appreciated. For Instance, he is
enough of a sentimentalist to have
bought a farm that he might own a
certain tree.
He was born In Cabinet Hall, one
of the buildings of Hamilton College,
New York, where his father, Oren
Root, was a professor. In his boyhood
years the two used to take long walks
together, and, time and again, on their
homeward way, it was under a splen
did hemlock on Kirkland Farm that
they would rest The hilltop com
manded a magnificent view of the
Oriskany Valley, across to the Adiron
dacks to the north, and often the elder
of the pedestrians would aay, as they
started on again: "I wish I owned
that tree."
In the years since there have been
many changes at Hamilton and In the
country round about, but the old hem
lock has remained untouched and the
other day Ellhu Root bought Kirkland
Farm and the tree which, he declares,
has long been a landmark In his life.
