While spending the past season in California with several large and ex perienced bee-fceepers I was taught sev eral vaiuabi lessons. One was the mak ing of a bee-brush that is, in my opinion, the acme of perfection. Take 20 inches of one-inch hemp rope; double together. AN IDEAL. BEE BRUSH. and bind with stray threads of hemp or foundation-wire to the length of four Inches, for a hnadle; then fray out the ends of your rope and soak it half an hour in water, and you have a brush that will neither disable a bee nor mar in the least the cappings. When dirty, or daubed with honey,, you can wash and wring dry, like any cloth. I have used both whisk and hemp brushes in the management of 500 colonies of bees, and I would ndt use any other but the home made article. By the pressure of your thumb you can regulate the width of your brush so as to cover a Langstroth frame at one stroke. . You can credit Mr. C. I. Graham, of California, with the above method, for he is the gentleman who taught me. George Herrick, in Bee Gleanings. PRODUCTION OF EGGS. Interesting "Experiment to Compare the Value of Different Grains for the Purpose Named. Some Interesting results have been obtained by the technical instruction committee of the Cornwall common council, of England, in an experiment co compare the value of different grains for egg production. Thirty pullets were selected and divided into six pens of five birds each. The nature of the food given to each pen of five pullets and the number of eggs laid is shown in the statement below: No. eggs laid Food. in 12 months. Half malse and half oats 732 Wheat 72J Maize Two-thirds oats and one-third maise.. M8 i Oats 646 Barley 447 The inferiority of oats as a whole ra tion or even when constituting the ma jor part of it is very marked la these result. Wheat gave much the best re sults of any single food, while, with the chicken as with all other stock, a mix ture of grains gives larger yields than any one single grain. We think very likely the failure to make a better showing on oats alone was due to the fact that the hull makes this such a bulky feed that the hens could not secure sufficient nutriment to make a large egg yield possible. WITH THE BEEKEEPERS. Strong colonies protect themselves against robbers and bee-moths. In rendering beeswax, use a tin. brass or copper Teasel. An iron one will darken it. I In making candy to feed bees be careful not to vuni m eurui caaux will kill them. i Trance, according to government figures, for the ten years ending with 1901, the average number of colonies was 1,608,412; honey per colony 10 pounds, 11 ounces; wax per colony three pounds. Rainwater is the right thing to use in melting wax. Well water, especially that where yellow clay or red sand abounds in the soil, contains iron, and this browns the wax. no matter how carefully the melting be done. Dr. C. C. Miller says in Glean ings that heretofore the largest yield he ever got from one colony was 192 sections, but last year he got 300 sec tions from one colony, with a number of other colonies yielding nearly as well. He credits these large yields to the selection of the best stores to breed from, and to the phenomenal flow of white clover, which the bees stored un til nearly mid-October. 7eed and Color of The appearance of the feed oa the color and appearance of poultry meat Is of sufficient importance to require careful attention. If tha market de mands a noticeably white meat aad akin fa its dressed poultry, the cheap est and surest way to attain this is to se much skim-milk In the diet. The a-raln ration should be mixed with it, and the drinking vessels constantly provided with a fresh supply. It win require extra good care to keep the fowls healthy on this diet, however. If a yellowish tinge Is desired. It may be obtained by feeding a grain ration to which ten per cent of animal meat has been added, and the whole mixed with water. . A grain mixture wet with, whey will also give good results. Prai rie Fanner. IT.
