Brazil Has a Fine Tea. .
United States Consul Ayme writes
from Para a recommendatien of a .Bra
zilian beverage, yerba mate tea, which
. Ls prepared from the roasted an4 pul
verized leaves of an evergreen "forest
tree.
Yerba mate is largely, consumed in
Paraguay and in the Brazilian States,
where it is made. It Is extensively
consumed in Argentina, in Uruguay,
and to a less extent in Chili. There is
a small consumption in other States
of Brazil, a small quantity is exported
to Europe and still less to the United
States and Canada. Estimated exports
may reach 45,000 to 57,000 tons annu
ally. Yerba mate has a peculiar bitter,
smoky taste, which Is usually consid
ered unpleasant, and this has largely
operated to prevent Its more extensive
use as a beverage, This smoky bitter
ness ls chiefly due to the rude meth

It seems likely that the. improved
methods of drying the mate on iron or

I am compelled by a sense of gratitude
to tell you the great good your remedy
has done me in a case of Contagious Blood
Poison. Among other symptoms I was se
verely afflicted with Rheumatism, and got
almost past going. The disease got a firm
hold upon my system; my blood was thor
oughly poisoned with the virus. I lost in
weight, was run down, had sore throat,
eruptions, splotches and other evidences
of the disease. I was truly in a bad shape
when I began the use of S. S. S., but the
persistent use of it brought me out of my
trouble safe and sound, and I have the
courage to publicly testify to the virtues of
your great blood remedy, S. S. S., and to
recommend it to all blood-poison suffer
ers, sincerely believing if it is taken ac
cording to directions, and given a fair
trial, it will thoroughly eliminate every
particle of the virus. James CUXRAX.

WHEN SCHOOL OPENS: .
SOME 0 VIS" TOR PARENTS
Do not believe all that your children
tell you about school. There was only
one George Washington, and he ls
dead. ' .
Do not tell the teacher that Willie
will not lie. She probably knows bet
ter. ' -
Do not condemn the teacher with
out a fair hearing" That is accorded
to even the worst criminal. There are
usually two sides to a story.
Do not send a scathing note to the
teacher by Nellie, the contents of
which she knows. Her aggressive look
of triumph is not soothing, and the
teacher ls only human. ....
' Do not make unfavorable comment
upon the methods of. the teacher in
the presence of your child. Send him
to carry In? the wood while you are
doing so, if- it must be done.
Do not plead lack of time to visit the
school. There is no excuse . for shirk
ink a duty. " . ,
Do not reproach ' the teacher with
the fact that 'Tommy has not learned
a single thing the.' entire year." She
is not responsible for ; his- - lack of
brains. -'. . ".
Do not send a verbal request to have
Jessie's seat changed. There is often
no vacant seat, and one change usu
ally means at least half a dozen.
Do not expect the teacher to man
age without friction a child whom you
yourself have never been able to con
trol. Do not Insist that the teacher is
keeping your child back through spite.
She will hardly risk her reputation as
an instructor to gratify a personal
grudge, however disagreeable the child
may be.
Do not forget that the parent owes
a duty to the teacher Just as surely as
the teacher does to the child. Alice
Cook Fuller.
THE POSTAL 8ERVICE.
A High Standard of Devotion to Duty
Is Maintained.
One clerk was busy throwing mail in
a combination smoker and baggage car,
when suddenly, without an Instant's
warning, he felt the. car leap from the
track and heard a terrific crash. When
he regained consciousness the wreck
presented this chaotic condition:. The
two forward cars had been plunged
down a seventy-foot embankment; the
combination car landed in an upright
position with the rear trucks on the
roof, every seat In the smoking com
partment being utterly demolished,
while on the floor of the mall compart
ment was a huge angular stone weigh
ing not less than half a ton. How the
mail clerk escaped unhurt will always
be a mystery, says the World's Work.
There Is probably no department of
the government service in which a
higher, standard of devotion to duty is
maintained than in this. During a
heavy freshet on the Susquehanna Riv
er, in 1890, all bridges were swept
away and the railroad tracks along the
banks practically destroyed. Four mail
clerks remained In their car nntil the
water rising and flowing through the
doors compelled them to take to an im
provised raft which consisted of pieces
of floating sidewalks and other debris
of the inundation, lashed together. On
this frail craft they put their pouches,
and carefully propelling by poles along
with the current, gained the postofflce,
a mile away. They found this aban
doned, with eight feet of water In the
street at that point. They were almost
exhausted and their condition was pre
carious... Finally, however, they were
rescued by boats and taken Into
houses through the second-story win
dows. The letter mall was all Intact
and In fairly good condition.
Some time ago the "run" on a West
ern road was "short" a clerk because
of sickness.. An official of the. service
happened to be on the train and volun
teered his services. For fifteen hours
he stuck to his work at the letter case.
In the Journey of more than 600 miles
he had only a sandwich or two for
food, and stood on his feet without re
lief. There are other instances on rec
ord where entire crews have stood to
the work without food for twenty-four
hours.
Preferred Arrest.
A thief broke into a large mansion
early in the morning and found him
self in the music room. Hearing foot
steps approaching, he hid -behind, a
screen.
From 7 to 8 o'clock the eldest daugh
ter had a lesson on the piano.
From 8 to 9 o'clock the second
daughter took a singing lesson.
From 9 to 10 o'clock the eldest son
had a violin lesson.
From 10 to 11 o'clock the other son
took a lesson on the flute.
At 11 o'clock all the brothers and
sisters assembled and studied an ear
splitting piece for the piano, violin,
flute and voice.
The thief staggered out from behind
the screen at half past 11 and, falling
at their feet, cried, "For mercy's sake
bave me arrested, but stop!"

BTORY FROlrt AN ABSTRACT.
Farm Now In Kansas City Sold by Sen
' ator CocltreU in Boyhood.
If Senator Francis Marion Cockrell
could have foreseen when he was a
boy that the great city of the Missouri
valley would be built here at the junc
tion of the Kaw and Missouri rivers
be might now be a multimillionaire. In
examining an abstract to a lot on
Tracy, between Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh
streets, R. J. Holmden, the
attorney, made the discovery that
Cockrell, in 1817, when he was a boy
of 13, owned eighty acres there, and
he sold it all for f 900. The lot which
Mr. Holmden was looking up sold re
cently for $5,000. '
The land. 640 acres of it, was deeded
by the United States government! in-
1827 to the State of Missouri for semi
nary purposes. The tract was all .of
section 21, township 49, range 33. , In
1833 Joseph Cockrell, father of .tho
Senator, bought eighty acres of it from
the State! for $2.02 an acre. Mr. Cock
rell died, and in 1847. when Francis
Marion 'Cockrell was 13 years old. he
petitioned the court, through his guar
dian, to sell the. eighty acres. '-
In his petition he said that he al
ready, owned a farm in Wnrrensburg
sufficiently large for his needs when
he should become of age, and, besides,
he said, the big storm of 1844, the
year, of the great flood, had blown
down all the trees on his eighty-acre
tract in Jackson county and therefore
it would be useless for him to hold it
because, when he would come of age,
the timber would be all dead. Hicks
and Smart of Independence were Cock
rell's lawyers. - The court granted his
readiest and the land was bought by
Joseph Brown for $900. Kansas City

Storm Cannons.
The storm cannons now in use along
the southern side of the Alps, where
damage from hailstorms during har
vest time is imminent, look like a huge
megaphone, such as boat-crew coaches
use, and they are set, with their wide
mouths gaping skywand, beside little
houses that look like sentry boxes.
When they are fired they boom like
"sure enough" cannons, and send re
verberating, echoing, boom-booms car
roming about among the hillsides; but
instead of a ball or shell, or other sim
ilar projectile, they emit a ring of
smoke which grows larger and larger
as it ascends, until at last, before it
breaks, it Is big enough to surround a
ten-acre field. What the effect of a
smoke ring upon a mischievously In
tent cloud is I cannot exactly say, but
instead of hail, only ram falls when
the guns are used, and damage to
crops is prevented. .

The .Royal Color.
Purple has always been considered
the royal color. The ill-fated Charles
was, however, at his own desire,
crowned in a robe of white. Alrhone-h
he was seriously reminded that of' the
two exceptions to this rule, Richard II.
and Henry VI. who wore white satin
robes at their coronations; both had
come to a violent end one at Ponte
fract castle and one in the Tower,
Charles I. was resolute in his decision.
and, when, twenty-three years after
ward, almost to a day, his body was
conveyed to its grave through a heavy
snowstorm, the superstitions could not
help remarking that the third "white
king" had suffered a violent death.

The savage tribes in the interior of
