Last Sunday closed the first year of the present pastorate at the Christian Church. The report for the year, given by the pastor, show ed a decided gain in the church ac tivities. "Wilson, who was appointed by the county court in July, to audit the county officers books for the past two years was presented at the last session, Wed nesday last. ' Mr. Brunk, the genial landlord of the Occidental has been quite ill for the past few days. Rev. Woodley, of Eugene, in the absence of the regular pastor preach ed at the Christian church Sunday. Prof. E. C. Hay ward and family left Thursday for a visit with re latives and friends at Victoria, B. C. R. W. Adams and J. H. Albright erected an addition to the lesic'epce of Samuel vyatt, who lives just west of town. Two hundred cords of wood ar rived Sunday from Hillsboro, for use at the S. P. depot. A large force of men is employed there now unloading the wood. Prof. O. V. White, of Philomath, is in Eastern Oregon drumming up students for the College. Word re cently receiyed indicat es that he is meeting witbjsuccess. Prof. Caldwell, the newlv elected and recently married president of the Philomath College, started westward from York, Neb.', last week and is expected home the latter part of this week. P. G. Bonebrake, a former re sident of Philomath, is now presi dent of Campbell College in Holton Kansas. But in that cyclone in fested land his heart still yearns for the green fields of Oregon. She has been in Corvallis since last October. In the matter of the mountain road a petition for which has been before the county court for some time, a postponement was granted tote viewers to prepare a supple mentary report owing to objections raised by several land owners living along the proposed route. E . Allen and wife, and daughter Edna, and Mrs. John Allen re turned Thursday from Portland, where they went to attend the wedding of Miss Anna Allen. Mr. Allen also attended, as a delegate, the recent session of theOregon Development League. Miss Elva Aiken after six years faithful seryice as the C. & E. agent atPhilomath resigned her position yesterday. Clyde Fox, the agent at Summit, will take the Philo office and H. H. Ling, of Albany, will have charge of the station at Summit. Are you doing anything for the Lewis and Clark Fair? If so, the managers in this city are anxious to know it. The exhibit of this coun ty is an charge of H. L. French, of tnis city, and if you have anything to put on exhibition let Mr. French know about it at once. Drop a postal and someone will call and consult you about it. They want anything that will be a credit to Benton county. The S. P. depot at Suver station together with most of its contents was destroyed by fire last Thurs day and about 60 feet of track bad ly damaged. The fire could have been put out easily, even after it had assumed good headway, if the depotmaster had one of the Dry powder Fire Extinguishers in the depot. The cost of one of these useful articles is only three dollars, while the loss to the railroad com pany must have run into the thous ands. Head Printer Keady and Otto Herse, assistant, ceased operations this week for a few days, in ordr to slip over into Alsea and kill a few deer. - ' Berry & Carl have in a new line of guns and ammunitian. Rev. Landy, the newly appoint ed pastor of the College of Philo math preached his nrat sermon Sunday morning to a crowded house. Rev. and Mrs. Parker, of Philo math left yesterday for a trip into Coos county. The trip will be made mostly by vehicle and will be in the nature of an outing. Mrs. O. V. White, of the music department of Philomath College, will leave this week to take special instruction along her chosen . line, in Portland. A picnic in the grove west of town is on the program at Philo math, Thursday. The U. B. Sun dav School will eiye it and West- wood and Plymouth will join in for a jol ly good time. In honor of the election of Prof Frederick Berchtold ' as Grand Master of the A. O. U. W. and the election of Mrs. Sarah Moore as Grand Usher of the Degree of Honor a reception was given in their honor Friday evening. f The Crefield case' is to go to the Grand Jury of Multnomah county. Crefieid waived examination before Judge Hogne and asked to go be fore the grand jury saying '"the Lord will plead my cause." People are already very tired of this un wholesome affair and it is hoped the grand jury will soak Crefield for all the Lord will allow theui and get him quickly screened from puoxic view. XT ci it u .1 : AnA Swipe, known bv everyone, and everybody's friend, passed away last week while making friends with a common, ordinary scrub, a cayuse colt. Mr. Danneman was titular owner of Swipe, but Swipe was everybody's dog, and the cruel kick that caused hia demise was received while he was going about his regu lar business of making friends. Many will miss Swipe when they want their umbrelles and baskets carried, but he is gone. His familiar form wiU no longer be seen upon the streets. He is gone. A B.J. Kelly died in Portland last week not as the result of an explosion of a locomobile as was reported at first but from burns received. There was no explo sion at all neither was there an automobile. Mr. Kelly was mauipulating a gasoline tank at the time and accidentally satu rated himself with gasoline, the gas igniting from the sparker on the tester. Mr. Kelly turned the wrong valve stop allowing the gasoline to come out, says Mr. Kelley's brother in a letter to the Sundav Oregonian.. Miss Anne Allen Married. A beautif ul wedding took place Wednesday evening, . August 3, at St.- Mark's Episcopal church, Portland, when Eidred Kuizenga and Miss Anne Allen, daughter of Mr. and : Mrs. tE. ; Allen,' of Corvallis, were united in mar riage, the ceremony being per formed at 8:30 o'clock, in tht presence of relatives and inti mate friends, by the rector, Rev. John E. H. Simpson. There were no attendants, The bride was charming in a. lovely gown of white crepe de chine, trimmed with point,, lace. Her veil was held in plate with orange blos soms, and she carried Bride rose buds. ; After the" service, a recep tion, was held from 9 until 11 o'clock, at the -residence of the bride's brother, A. W. Allen, the different apartments being exquisitely decorated for the happy occasion. ' The hall and parlors were embellished in white and green, with sweet peas and palms while the dining room was in pink, the blossoms being delicate sweet peas. Miss Edna Allen, sister of the bride caught her bouquet. The groom has been with the Knight Shoe Com pany ror several years, and he was held in high esteem, con gratulations being showered upon them by friends, far and wide. S,:' From Purgatory to Paradise. Casper . Durst, an old resident of this county, who left" here and went to live in Oklahoma, is now arranging to return with hi family to old Benton. Mr. Durst expects to leave Oklahom about the 15th of this month, and will make a short visit to his parents' home in Crabtree, while looking up a location in this county. In speaking of his present home Mr. Durst says: "We can't express our joy of being able to come back to Ore gon again after, living here in Oklahoma a year. We did nof have rain from the 30th day of October till the 28th day of April and heavy winds all. winter, or rather sand storms. The day dawned with a light fog hang ing over the city, a good omen that the weather on the coast will be clear. But the fog disappeared as soon as the foot-hills were reached, and the eun shone out clear and comfortably warm. About sixty Corvallisites were at theC. & E. de pot when the west-bound train pul led in at .dU. lhe cars were com fortably filled and the clear, bracing air of the mountain made the three 1. ours ride one ot exceeding delight The steamer, "Roscoe" took three loads of inexperienced sailors out over the bar, many of whom, on their return, were considerably crestfallen. The Life Saving crew gave an exhibition in the surf, demonstrating some of their meth ods in reaching ship-wrecks. It seemed as though nearly all took advantage of the .fine condition of the; surf and went bathing. The little folks dug in the sand and rac ed along the beach hunting agates and pretty shells. .
