HE CORVALUS GAZETTE TtTESDAYS AND FRIDAYS, Editorial Comment. Mr. Hearst has lost none of lis antipathy to trusts, particular ly the kind which raises the price of votes to $9333 each and limits the output to 150. West Virginia JCailroad and Mining trusts are n the ticket-of-leave list till after November. p f if It won't do to take too much "stoek in the alleged "athletic feats f our nexi Democratic vice pres ident to be (?). The story that le run a half mile in 2:10 and t&sn turned a hand spring, looks a little bit fishy to us. But it aiay be thaf we are prejudiced. The prominent Democratic papers of the East are putting out the plea, as one of the basic articles of their creed, that "even ri Parker ar.d a Democratic house should be'electcd ia 1904, neither Parker nor his party could harm the currency because a Republi ean senate will be sure to be in power for the next four years at least." This looks like an ad mission that they are ready and willing to iuin the country if they could get the chance. ' It also brings into prominence the great all-important lact that the snly way to make the gold standard secure is to keep the Republican party in power until t'he Democratic party is whipped into dropping the silver folly ...altogether. And this is just what is going to happen. The New York Times is one t'he londest of the Parker shout rs in that city. In its issue giv ing the account of Parker's trip from Esopus to New York on April 15, 1904, it states that the Judge met Belmont and Sheehan, Sxed up the platform, declared that "it was desired that the trip ito-tbe city on the eve of holding ths- state convention be kept a -3cretr" and added: "The plat form which has been approved and which will be presented to the convention on Monday, is understood to be drawn on ultra - conservative lines, and to avoid -all reference to the rocks on which the party split in. the two 4ast national campaigns." ' This ? show that Parker approved this platform before the convention saw it The wise heads of the party: knew that the straddle in the platform would give -Rocse v elt a walk-over in the cam-' paignv So- the sender of the gold telsgram took especial care not to send it until after he had the nomination - securelv in his hand- This convicts Parker Of being. a trickster. No man of that sort has ever been elected president by the American peo fle and none ever will be. 'Great Crowds At. Newport.. Excursions to Newport are of almost daily occurence now. The travel ;bayward has been grad ually increasing until, it is diffi cult to distinguish which are re ..gnlrr passenger trains and which -jtrejexcursion. Saturday and Sun day two trains loaded with pleas nre-seekers wound their way sea - ward. There are probably 1200 steady "dwellers there at the present time, many come and go away but on .- .special occasions there are several thousand there at a time The highest temperature in the ; past twelve years was 95 degrees, - ojfcne 7, 1903, and the lowest - temperature was 12 degrees on 1 Fe6a, 1899. Th average num ' berot tvs each year "with the temperature above 90" degrees is only one and the average num t ber ot days each year with the -temperature below freezing is only 32. The first killing frosts vcome about Christinas and the last ones occur about March. which gives a growing period of . 281 days each without the danger f harmful frosts The mean annual precipitation is 72 inches, , being the heaviest in November, and the least in July. The num ber or rainy days is 186. Snow .ieldoms-falls and remains but a short .time. The prevailing winds -axe northwesterly except during . ;tike .colder, months" whea-ythey come liom the southwest The most striking characteristic, next to the mildness of the winters is the coolness of the summers, especially the night temperature which during the hottest months average as low as 51 degrees." - For A Greater Oregon. A convention for the purpose of organizing an Oregon Develop ment league will be held in Portland, Tuesday and Wednes day, August 2 and 3." Every editor in Oregon is a dele gate at large. It is the invention and property of Luhrman Bros., of Salem, who worked it success fully atSalem duringthe carnival. The road is now being construct ed ; it will be three-fourths of a mile long and will run from New port to Nye Creek beach. It is a narrow gauge, rails 3x3 scant ling strapped with iron, dummy engine and cars. It is the design to transport passengers to and fro between Newport and Nye Creek and also for i pleasure riding. Only eight people can be hauled at a trip. The cars are, green and red. Luhrman Bros. think the proposition will pay at New port as it paid well at Salem.
