C2J (HE CORVALllS GAZETTE Tuesdays axd Fridays, O. A. D-EARING. ED. and BUS. MGR. 1 T. L,. Charnian. of Oregon CStv was in the city last week, discussing the question of piiterl water with the city council. He recommends a filtering system similar to that used in the city by the ialls. The cost of lbeir;plaot i was about $25,000. Derate tne council spends that mtfch mbav on filtering Willamette . river water it would do well to consider the Question of a purer water, by gravity system from Rock Creek.; It is Ume that this, master was again brought up, and spfjie steps taken looking to a speedy solu-; tiou of the all-impbrtant guestibri: of better water and better health. fc jfr It has been left to a Pennsyl vania Jurist, Judge Buffington, of Pittsburg, to render a decision on the strike question that con tains an element of fairness that will be appreciated by both sides. In the case before him growing out of the strike at the Rochester tasnbler works recognizes the right to strike and to use peace fnl measures in supDort of the strike, but very strongly denies the right to prevent by force or intimidation, men from working where ihev desire to work. The loeic ot the decision is contained in the judicial epigram that "To male a man work for another when he is unwilling: to work is slavery; to prevent a man from working who wants to work is tyranny." When the courts show an eoual boldness and incisive- ness in halting the more insidu us transgressions of the law to which combinations of capital sometimes resort the present prob lems in the solution of labor question will be found easier. From a close analysis of the vote cast by the Prohibition party at the last election it is evident that the party is made up of about 90 of republican proclivities and about 30 whose former political predelictions were democratic. This is evident from the way the vote is divided. One of the prominent leaders of the party, in our office a few days ago ex plained the situation as follows: 4We have waited for several years for the Republican party to adort our views on the temper ance question. They have done nothing. So we formed the third party." To put the case in a amtshell it means that because 4he 90 men could not dominate and control the 1600 voters ot the Republican party, they throw their influence in favor of the .Democratic party which they Itriow they never have and never -can control . What consistent rea oners these disgruntled fanatics are. Rule or ruin is their policy, and because they could not rule vour party in vour county they have mined it. But the Prohi bition question is not et settled It is for the Republican party of this county to say whether their votes on the Prohibition meas ures yet to come up shall be thrown in iavor of the tanatics who Have and who will continue to work against them at all times, or whether their measures shall be defeated. Think the matter over. IT ISA MATTER OF HEALTH Absolutely PqjrO THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE Buy yovn 4 th of July outfit and furnishings of Nolan Gattban. The Oregdn Annual Confer ence of the United Brethren in Christ closed its annual session Sunday, rwith-apprOiprtatatSab-i bath services. Bishop, JUL., iy-. Barkley delivered a masterful discourse to the : toinistry. -- Sev eral important changes have, been made in tne conference aamiais- ration.. Tne entire conterence was constituted one presiding er" s district, whereas hitherto there have been two districts. The conference created a col lege visitation committee to con sists of as many members as there are fields of labor in the confer ence. Suitable memorial ser: vices were held commemorative of the life and labors of Rev. R'. Loean and i 'E. S. Bogle, who died in, the year. The assign inents of ministers to the fields by the bishop and stationing com inittee is as follows: , Presiding elder, Willamette District, A. T. Ware; Portland Chinese Mission, Moy Ling; Portland Mission Station, P. A. Black; Columbia Circuit, W. H. McLain, Cowlitz, R. Miller; Ne- halem, to be supplied ; Hillsboro, T. J. Cocking; Yamhill, John S. Osborne: Oregon Citv. T. H. Merryman; Marion, W. J. Gos sett; ' Salem, Walter Reynolds; Benton and Plainview, John Mc Bride; Philomath, I. R. Hughey; Lane, A. E. Wheeler; Roseburg, A. E. Wheeler; Roseburg, to be supplied; Rogue River, William Stewart. The next annual session will be held at Oregon City. To Drill For Oil in Polk County. A company has been formed and financed to go in the oil in dustry again near Dallas, in Polk county. Over a year ago oil was sought at this place out a magmncent salt well was discovered instead, which owing to the moist climate would not be practicable to oper ate. The machinery at that time would not penetrate the earth any deeper and work was aban doned. Indications pointed to the existence of oil, however, deeper down and a first-class outfit has been procured and work will be enewed in the near future. 1 ne new well will be bored in a differ ent place from the old one, for, in case oil is discovered the salt well will be operated. There are several good salt wells in this part of the country, but the great difficulty is suita ble and sufficient fuel as artificial means must be employed to evap orate the salt water. The place where the boring has been done is on the Benjamin Whittaker donation claim. Mr. Whittaker in the early 'so's made an at tempt to profitably make salt by sun evaporation, but soon touna that the moist climate ot Oregon was a bar to this process and abandoned the attempt. County Commissioners. On Wednesday morning the county commissioners court met to transact unfinished business. O. V. Hurt and Lwis Hartley presented a plea, that inasmuch as Crefield is a criminal out oi the ordinary, that he is a menace to the peace and happiness of the rnmmunitv at large: that six of his followers from this commu nity have been, committed to the Insane Asylum ot this state, tnat the court would be justified in as sisting in the raising of such re ward as would secure his arrest. Said plea was granted and a county order to the sum of $100 was ordered drawn and placed, in the hands of Sheriff Burnett to be Daid bv him to the person securing the arrest of said Ed- mond Crefield. The following is the result of the vote for goddess of liberty, June 18: Maud Hays 121 Elsie Dilley 119 Edna Irvine 87 Grace Huff 80 Mamie Crawford 67 Lulu Spangler....; 58 Julia Cooper 52 Mabel Witycombe 2 The vote on the flag is fast rolling up into big numbers. Who is your favorite? If undecided, then why not vote for the public schools? This is a cause that appeals right to the heart of every father and mother in the city . The flag in the hands of the school children would be a source of joy to every home in Corvallis. Now is the time for the children to take hold of this matter and urge their parents to vote for the schools. The College is old enough and big enough to get their own. Each class has one of their own. Give this flag to the children and make the little tots happy.' Mrs. Sarah E . Moore and daugh ter, Miss Gladys, left Sunday for Prineville, where they expect to re main till about the nrst or August. They go to attend to matters of business. They were accompaniea as far as Hillsboro by Guy Moor, who expects to spend the summer at that place. The Corvallis carriage and organ factory is now a thing of the past. What remains looks like an an cient Assyrian watch tower. The water tower remains and the two lower stories of a part of the main buildiug.
