ME CORVALLIS GAZETTE Tuesdays and Fridays, O. A. DEARING, ED. and BUS. MGR. - Mr. Veatch, the Democratic candidate in the First District, personally urging and permitting the Democratic newspapers in support of him to attack his op ponent, Mr. Hermann, for irregu- ' larities while the latter was in the " public land office. The views of the different fac- . tions in the Democratic nartv are . so different, oftimes directly op . posed, that during political cam paigns Democratic managers re- fuse on all occasions, to discuss principles, oecause, rue .Demo cratic party has no definitely de fined principles to discuss. Mr. Veatch is one of his party who has held views obnoxious to a large majority of the members of the Democratic party. Mr. Veatch dare not discuss his politi- t J ll" . t cai ami popuiisuc views in iuc campaign, because, if he did he would drive all conservative Dem oearts against him; consequent ly, he has formulated a series of attacks against the personal char acter and integrity of his oppo nent, Mr. Hermann. There is no one, no matter how strenuously they oppose Mr. Her rmann, but who acknowledges without question that Mr. Her mann has been the most efficient member that Oregon has ever liad in Congress, and that he has "procured for Oregon more bene ficial results than any other rep resentative. Mr. Veatch, there fore, is proceeding with a series of misreoresentations accusing A. O -Mr. Hermann of wrong because ?he became out of harmony under ? his principal in the land office, 'but the lack of harmony was oc casioned more than anything be - cause the superior officer, Mr. Hancock, did not understand the ; people, or the nature of the lands, or their proper available use in On the contrary, Mr. Her rmann's home is in Oregon and ' he understood perfectly these dif i ficult questions and so directed his coaduct and recommendations as to protect the good people of Oregon. Neither the secretary -of the land office, or any of his subordinotes, has ever intimated either directly or indirectly that there was any wrong intent, or of purpose, in the acts of Mr. Hermann in his conduct ot the 'iienerai iana umce. On the contrary, it was Mr. Hermann who started the investgation as to the Benson and Hyde frauds, now being tried in San Francisco. It was Mr. Hermann's own mo tion that all the land entries were suspended in which the names of Benson and Hyde were mention- -ea ana tnereoy prevented issuance of patents theron, and those en teries are all suspended today wait ing the result of pending investi- If you ? bicyc: B ERKT gations. In all of Mr. Her mann's annual reports he urged strenuously upon Congress to re peal or modify the law which permitted so mnch unjust advan tage and grafting on the govern ment in forest lieu lands, selec tions whereby worthless r lands were conveyed to the government and so called script locations made of the most ' valuable tim ber lands in the country. Many times in the last session of Con gress, Mr. Hermann rose in his place and publicly denounced the law, and urged action of Congress to so modify it as to protect - the public domain. During Mr. Her mann's whole career in Congress, and especially while Commission er of the General Xand Office, he devoted his best energies for protection of, the honest settler on the public domain and against the corporations and script graft ers who are grabbing all the valu- able lands fit for home-seekers. It was made very apparent in the last Congress by some revelations made, that the unusual cry of land fraud has been industiously circulated by corporations, exten sive land owners and fraudulent land grabbers, for the purpose of repealing public land laws and preventing the proper amendment thereof, so that their own lands would appreciate in value by rea son of diminished sales of public lands. From this the public can readily understand the existence of the motive for so much exag geration of land frauds and the attempt to involve and besmear the good name of" public officials who uphold protectionjof the hon est settler and save the public do main. The testimony of Mr. Maxwell before one of the pub lic land committees of Congress two months ago admitted that various companies contributed to his association, which advocated the repeal of those laws, $5000 each, making $50,000 a year, so to bring influence largely along the lines of making the laws so as to admit advantages to the land grabber and to the disadvantages of the home-buider and the honest home-seeker. When the people consider Mr. Hermann's attitude according to the facts and that his life has been spent to promote the welfare of the common peo ple and during his term in the General Land Office, pitted against the aggressions ot the corpora tions and land grabbers and op posing their efforts, it is plain to see how these same corporations, their emissaries and fraudulent land grabbers have availed them selves of an- opportunity to cry fraud against Mr. Hermann, and it is certainly unfortunate for the interests of Mr. Veatch that he is lending his efforts to :' wrongfully accuse so honest, upright and beneficial public official as Mr. Hermann who has always served most efficiently the people as Con gressman and public official in the General Land Office. .
