fHEtal$ GAZETTt TcESDArVs asd Fridays, O. A. DEARING. ED. AND BUS. MGR. The Evening: Telegram of Monday, May 16, contains one of the best' write-ups of the town that has ever been-published. It occupies a pige and a half, and is filed with well written ecrip tions and cuts of the most piom- inent buildings. We reproduce the accompamng editorial, puMtshtd the same dav. 1 he whole is a credit to the Telegram- staff who bave gathered the iniortnatton, and to the paper itself fr the naiTRer "of presenting it.' Cor va3! 5s owes its thanks to the Te'l . egrsra for this special article. Tbere is no city in the state of Oiegoa whose residents are more entitled to entertain sentiments of civic pride than the college towu of Corvallis, the county seat and emporium of .trade, wealth and refinement for Ben ton county, and from position and importance deservedly recog nized as the center of the Wil lamette Valley. Corvallis is rich in historic interest and associa tion, -and .is to be reckoned as one of the most enterprising municipalities in the state. Its favorable location and transpor tation facilities-both to fhe coast and the state metropolis, that have been made available through the public spirit of its citizens; marks it prophetically as one ot the future great cities in the new Oregon. -It is doubtlul if there . has ttfnanated from any other city in the state a more absolute and persistent influence for good than has cosae from Corvallis. With in its boundaries is located the largest educational institution in Oreeron, and the character of good scholarship and practical citizenship that has resulted from the training and instruction re ceived there, has been a factor in the state's progress and gen uine well-being that cantut be overestimated. -Within the boundaries of the state there is no section of the state where the newcomer from the East will better be repaid in a visit than the county of which Corvallis is the financial, com mercial and - governing center. The push and energy that is now manifest at this thriving city is characteristic of . the resi dents of the entire county. Land is productive, prices are reason able and aside from this there is within the public domain nearly 30,000 acres open for settlement. For hopgrowing, dairying, lum bering, livestock raising,, horti culture or general agricultural pursuits, there is promise of abundant return for capital and r labor. Socially, the city of Cor vallis is all that could be desired. In fact, in every line commer cial, industrial, educational and otherwisefrom its location and If you 3EKRY.& CARL prospects, the Benton county me irolis offers inducements second to none in Oregon: Telegram of May i6. LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE. Articles of general interest will be pob lished iu this department as the personal opinion of the w riters. It is anderstood that , the paper is not held responsible for any opinion ht re expressed." : I have been kindly accorded in the columns of the -Corvallis Oa- zette a candid presentation of -our side of Prohibition and the kin dred question of "Local Option." The latter first, please. Prbhi bi'irniist'saie in lavor of anything tttat promises . to -be effective in the solution of the liquor prob lem. The law to be voted on in June has this promise. I know that Prohibitionists hold this at titude, for I am in personal touch with all the leading. Prohibition ists of the state. Moreover they inaugurated the bill itself, fur nished seven-tenths of the money and nine-tenths of thev work in getting the petitions signed and are still paying and working far out of proportion to their mem bers. , But more we Prohibitionists believe that if Local Option is to be made permanent and effective t iere must be back of it a per sistent organization virtually in terested in its enforcement. The rights of the colored man could mvrr have been secured, much less could they have been maintained, had there not 'been standing solid at his back -the splendidly organized Republican party, crowned with the courage t heroic conscience. " On the basis of overwhelming historic expeiience we believe that a party indentifitd with any new and revolutionary principle, is essential to the permanence of that principle. And of course consistently with this belief we work for Prohibition with a party i behind it, whue working for lo cal option. But we are often asked to aban rlor, ,r mr!v nrnrtr onrl r,,tcK lo. f" ' j w " . cal option on non-partisan lines'. i nis seenis to me as uniair as it t would be for us to ask Republi can and Democratic leaders to abandon their patty work and de- in the direction of their princi-' pies to oe sure, but on non-par- tisan lines. j Oh! this will be solved when we believe, that men and money ! both are worth more than money alone, and less money at that.
