E. B. Foliett has traded 60 acres of his
Mill Creek farm for the Elden Bowen

Alf Rycraft, while peeling bark last
Saturday, struck his leg with the ax and
inflicted, an ugly gash just above his
ankle joint.
Dr. Newth was called to visit the little
son of Finley Fullerton last Saturday,
At last reports the boy was improving.
On the afternoon of Saturday last Mrs
Marion Hayden while returing on horse
back from visiting, her mother, Mrs.
Malone, had the misfortune to be thrown
fromher horse and painfully dislocating
her ankle joint.
The chittim harvest is now on. The
Railroad company has a man here who is
kept busy and a number of persons who
were nnable to secure claims are negotia
ting with the company for terms on which
to peel their bark. Some are securing it
on the shares, while others prefer to
make cash deals. Oscar Tom is trying
to secure 2500 acres of their land. We
are informed that Mr. Tom proposes pay
ing $1200 far what chittim there is on
this land, At this writing it is not
known what disposition the company
will make of his bid.

late of Waterloo, Iowa, were callers at
the Laurenson home Monday. They are
pleased with what tbey have seen in Ore
gon, but expect to return home in a few

Mr. Pratt, of Philomath, independent
candidate for school superintendent was
calling on the Oak Grove voters and giv
ing: them a hearty hand-shake, Thurs

Moses were renewing old acquaintances
at Oak Grove Monday. v - '
The Republicans of Fairmonnt met at
the Oak Grove school house Tuesday
evening and organized a Roosevelt Club
by electing F. B. Williamson pr'ee., F.
J. Risley vice-president and Paul Johns
ton secretary. The meeting was well at
tended and a rousing old time was had.
Mr. George Waggoner of Corvallis was
present and gave a very fine talk about
the good things the Republican party
has done for the people, of the United
States and urged that every loyal republi
can buckle on the whole armor and fight
to a finish for the rights that we cherish
and belieye to be true. A resolution was
introduced and carried, extending the
thanks of the Club to Mr. Waggoner for
tne interest taken and his presence
among us.

Prohibition Rally.
About 350 people assembled
at the Court House Monday night
to hear Dr. E. L. Tiffany, the
celebrated temperance evangelist
ot New York speak on the billed
subject, "Good Citizenship."
Dr. Reevesof the M E. Church,
South presided. There was some
very clever singing by the Philo
math Ladies' Quartette and the
lecture was very creditable. , .
The majority of 'those present
were there out of sympathy tor
local option movement, now be
ing inaugurated and in -the-interest
of which it was supposed
the meeting was called.. It turned
out to be a Prohibition mass
meeting. - -v
.Although originated and fos
tered by the - Prohibition party,
the local option proposition was
made the object ot many scurril
ous remarks by the different
speakers. Why this was so it is
difficult to tell. "
It is the evident intention of
the party to discard local option
altogether and taking advantage
of popular sentiment to push the
temperance issue along strictly
party line.
Popular sentiment being very
strong just now in favor ot ' tem
perance measures, may help the
Prohibition party some, but in
view of the stronger sentiment
against that party being able to
accomplish the desired end, it is
very much doubted if it is pur
suing the wisest course. The
canvass for campaign funds at
the close of the meeting was evi
dence enough that the people
want nothing whatever to do
with the Prohibition party as an
organization or as a power be
hind local option to make it
effective.
Every method known to the
ministerial' protession was re
started to, to extract monev from
the large-audience, but less than
$5 was secured.
There is a large and well-de
fined class of citizens in favor of
temperance measures from a pure
ly non-partisan point of view,
yet wnen made a political issue
will discard it.
Parents Meeting in Alsea.
The Hope Grange will meet
with the schools of Alsea Valley,
at the Grange Hall, in Alsea,
next Saturday. This will be a
rousing meeting, and much good
for the schools is expected to re
sult from it. Questions of vital
importance to the best interests
of advanced education will be dis
cussed, aud parents and friends
ot the schools will take part in
the exercises. A special invita-
tation has been issued to all friends
of education to be present and as
sist, and a good turn out is confi
dently expected. -
Arrangements for the entertain
ment oi the children have been
made, and an hoars program pre
pared. This will be one of the
most pleasing features of the days
exercises. A basket dinner at
noon will serve to brighten up
the wit of the; speakers for the
afternoon debate.
It is the duty of every parent,
in the valley to attend this meet-1
ing.
