O. A. C. Notes.
H. W. Craven has moved into his
property northwest of the College.
Fred Houston, 02, is lying at the
point of death with typhoid' fe?er,
Uuion, Oregon. - -
The barber shops .hare been busy
iately, since the Major said that
short hair was a part. of a military
man's make-up. '
The literary societies are having
their pictures taken for the special
edition of the Barometer. Be sure
and get one when they come out.
The government inspector, Major
Lee Tebinger, who was to have in
spected the battalion May 5 will
not be here until some time next
week.
Prof. Johnson is still down with
rheumatism and unable to attend
bis classes. It is the first time in
years that be has missed a class on
account of sickness.
Otto Herse has moved into the
Jensen property just north of the
College, Mr. Jensen and family
having moved to Southern Oregon,
where he has a caim to attend to.
The freshmen class in "Breeds of
Stock" are now judging and scoring
the stock on the College farm. This
work is preparatory to the trip they
are going to make through the Wil
lamette valley to visit the best
herds of cattle. . ' .
There is going to be a bo social
at Mrs. Howard's residence on 5th
and Adams street. A' number of
College' girls are making baskets
and of course t.uey each want a boy
to buy it, fi be sure and be-there.
A good pr -gram and lots of good
things to eat.
The c'ass meet will be sure to
take p'ace next Saturday afternoon
It will bu much closer since Coates
has left. The juniors think now
that they can win over the' fresh
men.' But the freshmen -are still
very confident. " Come out Satur-
dav and encourage the boys and be
entertained by the best meet of the
season. ..
The piospects for an athletic
meet with Eugene are good. We
can easily win over them if the
boys do the kind of work they did
at Portland. ' However, Coites has
left us so a few points will be miss
ed. He also tried to induce Smith
son to leave and to that end drove
over from Albany in the night.
But he was. not successful in his
project as Smithson is still with the
team.
The interest in the science of
pitching horse shoes is getting quite
intense among the people who fre
quent Can thorn Hall. The way a
certain young man appears every
evening after, supper in his shirt
sleeves with two horse shoes in his
han-1 and defies the whole company,
as did Goliath of old, shows that
it is a subject that will soon be de
manding attention which it rightly
deserves.
Mr, Tate, a lecturer for the A. O.
U. W.,gave one of the best talks
that has been heard in the chapel
this year, when he visited the Col
lege last -Wednesday. He said,
"Be worthy to occupy the highest
position that the natiou can bestow,
then it is is not so important
whether you get it or not. But
be worthy of it." And then he
said that the one thing- that is
neefcssary to the young man or
woman starting out in life is self
respect. If you would have the
world Jrespect you learn to respect
yourself.
Major C. B. Harden, when aked
by President Gatch in chapel one
morning if he ever thought it
strange that the strongest and most
healthy-looking boys were the ones
that were tick the most, said that
he had noticed it very often. He
said that to some it might seem
very strange that the strong men
were so sickly while the we ik-lo3k
ing men were always well, but he
knew why it was. He said it did
not hurt his feeliDgs to have them
do that way, but he did not like to
have them deceive themselves by
thinking that they were deceiving
him when they handed in such ex
cuses. ie also remarked that
there were more men here with
corns on their feet than any place
he had ever . been. He closed by
remarking that every man was mak
ing his own record here and that he
was keeping it for him. and would
promote mm according to that rec
ord. ' The boy who has any per
sonal ambition in life will not pass
lightly by such good advice as the
Major gave.
Lat Thursday morning chapel
exercises were conducted by Father
Smith, of the Catholic church, who
was then holding a meeting in the
Catnoho church in this city. He
gave a talk on the life and work
of Cardinal Newman, and said that
one of his books had helped him to
attain to the nest in t ris lire more
than other one book he ever read.
He showed how Cardinal Newman,
than the - average young mair, had i
bv bis own 'personal effort raised
himself to "a high place in the
Catholki. church and amortg the
thinking men of the age. He then
said .that although he was-born
and raised in New York City he
deplored the fact that so many
boys were leaving the farm to seek
their fortunes in the city. He said
that the farmer was the most inde-
