THE CORVALLIS GAZETTP Tuesdays and Fridays, O. A. PEAKING, ED. and BUS. MG2. The battle for representative to congress in this district, is go ing to be a hard-f jught one on both, sides, but the knowing nes are confident that - it has aheady been decided. The Ore gonian is out strong for Her mann and in its Sunday issue said: ,Bnger jHermann will be re nominated for , congress next Wednesday in the Republican Convention of the First Rep-e-sentative District at Salem. Hermann has completely routed his rival by capturing Josephine, Washington and Yamhill coun ties, upon which Harris placed confident reliance. Hermann's votes in the convention will out number Harris' by nearly two to one. . The pn.b .bility oi Hermann's Tenoniiaation has been manifest for several days. Tne fixst seveie loss to Harris was that of L'nn county, next of Clackamas, then of Washington and finally of Yamhill. Eirly in the race he appeared to run very strong. Several days ao he said that even if he could not be nomina ted he would-place his candidacy before the convention. In Monday s paper the situ ation is again reviewed, with this summary: Now that the coigressional ontest in the First Dtstrict seems to be settled in favor of Her mann,, attention is being turned to local matters of more import ance and to the probable action of the Democrats. While the friends of Harris do not express ly admit thit their favorite is de feated, they show that they have little hopes of his success. It is claimed lor him that he will cut iihto some of the delegations that are-counted solid for Hermann, Bat there is little if any expecta tion that he can secure votes ececgh to win out in that man ner 'Wednesday. May the best man win. ikterYTrom theTeop LE, Articles of general interest will be pub Ilshed in this department as the personal opinion ct the writers. It is understood that the paper is not held responsible for any opinion here expressed. Editor Gazette : It is now common rumor; and I believe general belief that the delegates elected to the District Conven tion; by the Republican Conven tion just held in our county are pledged to someone here or else where, to vote against the nom ination of Binger Hermann. If this be true, and the dele gates so vote, L wish to enter a protest against their action being tfcBsen in any manner as represent ing the sentiment of the conven tion which elected them. They were, act instructed, and there was-no discussion of Mr. Her mann's candidacy in the Conven tion. Had the subject been agi tated before the convention, I feel certain the opposition to Mr. Her mann would have been found to Be very local in its nature and limited in extent. It might pos sibly have been traced to one in dividual, who for some cause not apparent to the people of Benton county, concluded a change in our delegation in Congress was desirable at that time. Be that as It may, it is apparent to any one who takes the pains to in quire into the matter, that Bin ger Hermann has lost none of his old-time popularity in Benton county, and that a large majority of the Republicans will feel agrisved should their sentiments Be misrepresented in the District convention.. Biuger Hermann's faithful and efficient service in behalf of the people of this District are too well known to require recapitu lation at my hands, and the poli cy ofc retaining a tried and faith .fbi' servant, too well recognized to require argument in its behalf. 2a the name of the common sen timent of our people, and prompt ed by my own sense of right and justice, I protest against Her mann's banner county being rep resented as- opposed to his re nomination. The agents took my -place in hand They were so sure they could sell the land. I sometimes think they did not try For they never brought a man to buy, They gave me a wink with a knowing smile And tried to fool me all the'while.1. NEW PIANOS ! ! $50.00 ITO $75.00 cheHDer than vou can buv them in Portland or of Portland agents. We claim to sell in struments oi the same quality $-V) 10 $75 cheaper than any other egents within 500 miles. This may seem like a bolo statement, but we are prepared to back it up with incontrovertible eviueuce, if given a chance. ARGUMENT. All large dealers, like the Portland firms, have enormous expenses that we do not have in the way of immense rent, electric lighr. clerk" hire, freight, drayage and numerous other bills. .Especially is this true of their agents who cart their pianos around from town to town, creating bills which you have to share if you buy of them. Large firms save about 810 on apiano bar buying in large carload lots Do you think that makes up for the above expenses? .We are in a position to sell cheaper than any large firms and the way our customers are i.. creasing gives evidence that people are finding it out. Beware of spec ial sales, piano clubs and the like. Mo firm can sell goods at wholesale prices to the retail trade and no firm does. We always make a profit on our pianos aud never give anyone a special price, or sell to you for less than your neighbor, as we have but one price the year around. There is not another dealer in the Pacific Northwest, to our knowl edge, which has strictly one price on each piano from wbich they ever never deviate. At least hare a talk with - M. A. GOODNOUGH before purchasing and see what he has to oiler. Our $250 pian is a thoroughly good instru ment, of beautiful tone, action, finish and workmanship and one which would cost else where $300 so $325. We have several new styles coming.
