Re membering that there were three large fir trees standing near the bouse, he loot ro time' in making his exit, grabbing his two children and following his wife they made a dash into the blackness of the night, scarcely Lad they crossed the threshold, when with a fearful crash, one of the big firs fell grazing the side of the honse and falling so close to Sam that his friends say his hair doesn't lay down as well as it might. Philomath. The Prohibition League is hard at work for the coming campaign. They were fortunate in securing the able ser vices of Rey. Snyder, of Washington, who gave us a rousing lecture en prohi bition on Sunday afternoon, and also ad dressed au appreciative audience on the local option question Monday evening. He very clearly -et forth the benefit this mea.-ure will be iu hastening the coming of prohibition. Supt. Denman was in town Tuesday completing 'arrangements for the teach ers' institute and parents' meeting to be held here in April. He was also looking over tke political ground for the coming campaign H, Ambler is circulating the required petition in behalf of S. I. Pratt, as inde pendent candidate for county superin tendent of public instruction. I A. C. Freeman and Wm. Castle were in from the Benton County Mill last Tuesday. An entertainment will be given at the College of Philomath, Friday evening, March 18. This entertainment com pletes the winter term ol school and will be given by the elocutionary and music departments. The elocutionary num bers, given by the members of Miss Edna Irvine's class, will be well worth hearing, and the music, furnished by Miss Mabel Cronise, who has charge of the music de partment, will be a special feature. Prof. L. B. Baldwin spent Sunday at EdJyville. ' Elder G. H. Iseft held quarterly meet ing at the Brick Chapel Sunday. As entertainment will be given under the auspices of the W. O. W. next Sat urday evening at the I. O. O. F. Hall. J. P. G. Henderson , who lives several miles south of here, was in Pnilomatb Saturday ou business, C. L. Gray is visiting his father, Al fred Gray. Mr. aud Mrs W. T. Bryann arrived home Saturday after several days visit with their son. J. J. Bryan, at Spring field. C. F. Logman has been assisting in the poaiotfice the past ten days. Mrs. S. M. Zeruntf, of Portland, is in Philomath vitiiing iier soh, Harry Ze rung, and her daughter, Mrs. E. R. Par ker. John McGee has moved into the resi dence owned by A. B. B. Lewis. Philomath has caught the inspiration, and Fliuch champions are heard of. But as yet the main part of the town is not affected, the crize having just reached the city limits. Scott & Pugsley have improved the appearance of their store by putting in new gas lamps. Monday, a small landslide, occasioned by the heavy rains, blocked the road on Alsea mountain, for a few hours. Miss Georgia Hartless returned to Cor vallis last Saturday, after spending sev eral days in Philomath visiting with friende. R. Mathenv was down town last Tues day, for the first time since the rirst part of January. Rev. Snyder was in town Sunday, and Monday, and Held a meeting tor the Temperance Alliance Sunday afternoon pledging temperance voters. Last Tuesday, for the first time in two months, one whole day passed without a shower. Hodges, of Soap Creek, was doing business in Albany Saturday. Will Karstens, who has been confined to his bed the most of the winter, is able to be up again. Rev. Smith held quarterly meeting at Oak Grove Saturday, returning to Al bany in the evening. A. L. Ingall left Monday for Pullman, Wash., where he accepted a position as telegraph operator with the railroad company. Mrs. H. J. Moore entertained several ot her lady friends Saturday afternoon and a very pleasant time was had. Those present were Mesdames Knapp, Ingall, Waldon, Maasall, Moore and Gibson. Dr. Bathorn, of New berg, was calling on some of our people Thursday. Barney Cady. the man who made a hit raising hops last year, is going to try his hand again. Monday morning he mov ed a part of his belongings over to the yard preparatory to beginning work when the weather will permit. Wednesday morning in the Col lege chapel Major Hardin gave a very interesting talk on the Russo Japanese War, which was principal ly on the basis of operation and a description of the Japanese army and people. His graphic descript ion ot the strategic points, of the places now fonifipd and points of vantage likely to be occupied when the two armies meet, were found to be very interesting and instructive to the scholars.
