very pleasant affair, the speakers were H.
White, M. Staines, E H. Castile and A.
T. Whitten. The judges were T. T. Vin
cent, Rev. Green and Professor Denman,
of Corvallis. Mr. White was graded
first, aud is tberebv selected to enter the
coutest held next month at this place.
Mr. Berryman and family arrived from
Idaho la t Saturday. . Mr. Berryman was
here a few weeks ago buying property,
but returned to Idaho for his family.

The warm rains of the past week are
causing the grass to start nicely.
Jasper Hayden registered at the Hotel
Alsea last Saturday.
Rey. Arnold, of Kings Valley, occu
pied , the pulpit at the church last San
day. The spring term of school in the three
districts in the main valley will be taught
by the following progressive teachers;
District No. 29, Mrs. C. G. Springer, of
Philomath; District No. 41, Miss Edith
Harrisou, of Waulport, aud District No.
42, P oiessor C. Springer, of Philo
math. Koad District No. 13 i without a su
pervisor at tins wining. G. G. Peek was
appointed by ihe court to fi'l this place,
but he has stated tliat he would not
qualify, unless compelled to. His trip

M. S. likkaiil, who came here the

Mr. Hickard hopes to convert the two

The little eight months old baby of
Mr. and Mrs. McCormick died last Thurs
day evening at 5 o'clock. The remains
were interred in the Alsea Cemetery the
following Saturday at 11 o'clock a. m.
Tne remainder of the family are suffer
ing with the same peculiar malady that
took away the little oae, that of a severe
cold accompanied with a cold that re
sembles whooping cough. Dr. Newth of
Philomath has charge of the case. At
last reports all were a little better.
A great many are having Bevere colds.

P. E. Williamson is talking of going to

past week. She is threatened with

John Johnson, of Salem is visiting his
mother, Mrs. Lewis Wentz.
George Price and his eister, Rose, of
Palestine, were callers at the Maybeiry
home Sunday.
George Anthony returned-Saturday
from Riverside, where he had been spend
ing a few days with relatives.
Walter Govro, who was called to the
bedside of his sick mother at Indepen
dence, returned home Saturday, leaving
his mother much improved.
Major Dodson, of the O. A. C. spent
Saturday visiting his sisters, Mrs. D. N.
Williamson and Miss Julia Dodon, the
latter w ho was expecting to start for her
bo ne in Texas the .first of the week, but
lit. s concluded to spend a few more
months in Oiegon before going home.
R. N. Williamson, of Welle, Eold to L,
W. Edmester, of Nez Perce, Idaho, Sat
urday, two of bis fine O. I C. hogs,
which Mill be shipped to the latter place
at once.
S. P. Lawrensou's mother and two
sisters arrived in A lbany Thursday, direct
from Iowa. They came' expecting to
make Oregon their future home.
Dr. Bailey, while cutting wood, bad
the misfortune to lose his balance aud
fell headlong into a pile of wood, break
ing the small finger of the left hauJat-d
receiving other slight injuries.
' Supervisor Wentz seems to be kept
pretty busy answering calls from diEer
ent parts of the district as some of the
roads are in a very bad condition. One
place at the east approach of the Albany
bridge is impassable and will leceive due
attention as soon as the weather will
permit.
We have an abundant supply of worth
less canines, whose only object seems to
be is to prowl around until they and
some innocent little flock, and while
the owner in his slumbers is dreaming
of better days, they begin their dirty
work, and by morning only a few re
main as a monument of what has been.
We don't need a fool killer if he was to
happen this way no doubt be would go
away empty banded, but we are in need
of a dog killer and no doubt ere long he
will be found.
Bellfountain.
Mrs. Fred Walters, of Elnnra, Lane
County, has been visiting her people
here for a week, while Mr. Walters was
in Portland on business. Mr. Walters is
the owner ef a fine sawmill at El mi ra.
A protracted meeting will commence
here next Saturday evening under the
leadership of the U. B. church.7
Last Friday night the Bellfountain Lit
erary Society met at the Grange Uall in
regular session. Besides a well render
ed program there was a Hue discussion,
by some of the best talent here, on the
question: "Which affords the best envi
ronment for the development of the char
acter, poverty or wealth." The decision
was in favor of the affirmative. Miss
Reader Miss Dunlap and Mr. Kyle at tt
ing as judges.

Mr. Bailey, of Nebraska, who bought
Mr. Toziers place is expetted here in a
few days. . Besides his family, ' furniture
and farm implements, he will bring some
fine Hereford cattle and a large black
Percheron -horse, all of which' will be a
much neededat-quistion to South Benton.
L. H.'Hawley is favorably spoken of
as a republican candidate for county
commissioner. Abetter selection' could
hardly be made, as Mr. Ham ley is not
only one of the heaviest taxpayers, in the
precinct, but is one of the most conser
vative business men in the count-y.
Grass and grain hav grown more ia
the last few days than in all the time
since the new year began.
With the exception of a few places that
a load or two of gravel would make good,
aud about a mile below the buttes that
was graded but not graveled, the road
from here to Corvallis is almost as good
as in thesumuier time. Itwe can't have
a railroad, we will have a wagon road.
