Fourteen people lost their lives as a result of the fire on the Pa clfic Coast Company's steamer Queen, from San Francisco io Seattle, early Sunday morning. The origin of the fire is yet un known. It .started in the social hall of the vessel at about 4: 30 in the morningr and raged for three hours before it was got under control. Three men. waiters on the ves sel, were suffocated before they could reach the outer air in safety from their bulks in the glory bole iu the after pirt of the ship, and one woman died from exposure, Launch The Life Boats ! Wnen Captain Cousins, com mander of the vessel, discovered the extent of the fire, which em braced practically all the rear portioii of the vessel, he immedi ately ordered the lifeboats to be launched. Four boats filled with women and children and sufficient men to man them were dropped from the windward of the vessel, each containing about 16 people. The first boat capsized almost as soan as it touched the water by getting under the stern of the ship. All the passengers in this were rescued by the other small boats, with the exception ot a Miss Steiner, a first-class pasen senger, who was drawn under the ship when the bo it capsized. The secoud boat capsized while being lowered. There were no passengers in this at the .time, but the crew of four men was spilled out and lost. A third boat filled about half a mile from the Queen and all but four of its passengers and ctew were rescued bv the other small craft in the vicinity. Four Burned to Death While searching through the charred timbers the eyes of searchers met a horrible sight, for, although it was known that some had been drowned, no one anticipated that fire had marked the accident. Four unfortunates were found, the bodies being partly incinerated. Upon this discovery a muster of passengers and crew was forthwith ordered, with the result ot finding that 14 had sacrificed their lives in the accident. Of these the four burned were pantrymen. Practically the entire aft of the ship is in ruins. The intense heat of the flames has bent and twisted the interior iron work into a shapeless mass, and sailors viewing the ruins today state that they do not understand how it was found possible to get con trol of the flames. ' Were it not for the fact that the captain, crew and passengers behaved Twith the utmost coolness, the vessel would have undoubtedly been destroyed and the loss of life enormous. The vessel carried more than 200 passengers. Never growl because a newspaper fails to give every scrap of news, so long as you take no pains to give the editor information. We have heaul of readers who are uiuch put out because no itote was made of friends visiting them, or of social a flairs, or of heaven sent babies that arrived in the night. The av erage newspaper man is not a me diuui or a mind reader. He wants thi news and gets all he can but if you shut up like a clam whenever he come3 in sight, you cannot ex pect to sea much news regarding yourself and family in the paper. Ex. BlockatM! . The voters of Fairmount prec not seem to be very neglig-nt in reoptrci j to registering here as elsewhere The judicial officer of the precinct has only filled out, 32 applications for registration sr. far and twe monlhsof the five are pssst-d and gone. The old maxim, ''Consistency thou art a jwel" ought to be ap plicable to the county affairs as to other tbinga. The average tax pa v er is almost dumb-founde 1 when he glances over the tax list nod notices that, his too has not deci eased, but has increared, with leps and bounds and with little to show for the mon ey expndedt The people of Fair mount precinct alone pav to the tax collector about, !f5028.73. Besides we have something like lvO voters of whom the most are subject to a $3 poll tax to be credited tn the road fund of the district. Where all this money goes to is only to be known by th wiseacres who seem to spend it with a lavish hand as though it cost no one anything, and and I suppose it will take eternity itself to solve some of the myster ies which the finite world is not able penetrate. An official invitation is hereby extended to the county of Benton, to make a special exhibit, either in its own behalf or in connection I with some other body, municipal or otnerwise, at the lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition to be held in Portland in 1905. It is the purpose of the Exposition to encourage comprehensive ex hibits by counties and by cham bers of commerce, boards of trade and other commercial organiza tions. For exhibits of this character, illustrating the re sources, industries and progress of communities, the following regulations have been provided: Firsl-The preparing and install ing of exhibits by counties or organizations will be left to the counties or organizations iu whose name or under whose authority the exhibits are made. Counties or organizations may erect separate buildings, or may install their exhibits in the State buildings of the State in which the county or organization is located. Space will be provided on the Exposition grounds for all buildings erected by counties or organizations and no charge will be made therefore. Plans and specifications for such build ings shall be submitted to the Director-General for his approval. Second All collective exhibits made by counties and trade or ganizations will be permitted to participate in the general com petition; that is. oe both collect ive and competitive. I desire to enlist your co operation and support in this movement, and respectfully to urge early consideration of this invitation so .that, if favorable action is taken, we may allot the necessary space and give you ample time to proceed with pre parations for your exhibit. Whatever may be the decision upon our invitation, I am satisfied we can shape our plans so as to harmonize all efforts to the end that your exhibit may be highly creditable, not only to your progressive community and state, but to the Exposition as well. We feel confident that the ar rangement we propose will offer to counties an exceptional op portunity of demonstrating their potentialities at tiie Lewis awd Clark Exposition of 1905, and I that the result ot exhibtts made in this way will be beneficial to all.
