Bellfountain.
E L. Tozier, has gone to Coos coonty
to look for a dairy location.
Bay Starr and Vivian Bain haye gone
to Oregon City to work in the palp mills.

Mioses Golda Hotrard and Alice Ed
wards, ofthe O. A. C. spent Satnrday
and Sunday with their people at home.
The Bellfountain Grange met in regu
lar session last Saturday. The program
consisted of dinner, cocial and business
matters pertaining to the progress and
welfare of the or er.
Last Fiiday evening the literary soci
ety met at the Grange Hall. The pro
gram consisted of music, recitations and
reading", also a paper by M s. Thorp,
that was highly entertaining.
Washington's birth-'ay was observed
by the public school in a well rendered
program of recitations, spelling, and the
erection by 10 boyp, of a Washington
monument that fvas unique. There
were a number of visitors present.
Summit.
School losed yesterday, February 25,
completing a school year of' seven
mouths.
Mrs. Clara Baker, of Kansas, arrived
last week to n ake her parents, Mr. and
Mrc. John Duncan, a visit.
AI iNeedham, who had the misfortune
to have his foot crushed last harvest, is
now able to walk on his artificial foot.
Mr. aud Mr. Herri a have employment
in a logging camp at Holly, Linn' county.
Bradley Mulkey is living on their farm.
Rev. Wm Plow-nan, of the United
Evangelical church, has only one more
appointment this con'erence year. His
labors were quite successful, and we hope
he will be returned to this work.
Johnny Graham, of Turn Turn, was
married to a lady from Grass Valley last
week. The happy couple arrived on
Saturday 'a train. , We extend congratu
lations lo this worthy young couple.
Brnce Hamar, of Nashville, is prepar
ing to put in a stock of merchandise at
this place. Parties have been looking
over the situation with a view of locat
ing a drug store and a blacksmith shop in
our midst. This is the best trading
point between Pld'omath and Toledo.

Alsea.
Justice Hogue has been laid up for a
few days with a stitch in his hip and
back.
We are still hayintc s me rain, but
mush warmer than the heavier storms
of a week ago.
Farmers are well along with their
work, and both the fall and winter sown
grain is in excellent condition.
Sheep are in better shape than a year
ago, with the exception of a few small
bunches that look decidedly the worse
for the wear.
Previous to February there has beeB
no winter to speak of. Cattle out on the
range are in good coudition; in fact, they
are wintering better than those kept up
on dry feed. .
Thos. Vidito, a former resident of this
place, but now of the livery firm of
Vidito Bros., of Corvallis, drove over the
mountains to his natiye clime on busi
inees one day last week.
-Colonel Wistrow, who has been in de
clining health for several years, was re
cently moved from his home to that of
W. L. Malone, where he may be given
better care. "The colonel," as he is
familiarly called, served Alsea in the
capacity- of postmaster over a score of
years.
At a regular meeting of Hope Grange
on the 13th, representatives to the
county convention, which convenes the
fore part" of March, were elected as fol
lows : Delegates, G. C. Peek, C. E. Ban
ton and S. N. Wat field ; Alternates, Mar
ion Hayden, G. T. Vernon and E. J.
Banton.
Monroe.
E. H. Belknap was in town Monday to
get some chopping don.
There has been some small losses of
stock during the late storm.
Rev. Stormer, of Harrisburg, of the
M. E. Church, South, preached last
Sunday at the Brown school house.
The flouring mill at Monroe has been
shut down for about two weeks on ac
count of high water, but expect to be
grinding in a few dajs.
Charles West, who carries the mail
between Monroe and Junction City
tailed threj trips last week on account of
the high water, but is making hs regular
time this week.
Ed Williams was in Monroe Monday.
He stated he was getting through the
winter ell so far, but needed good
weather soon. Ed is a hustler and will
get through all right.
Fanners are getting impatient with so
much rain. There is a great deal of
plowing to do preparatory to spring
seeding, and the time is drawing near
that they should be sowing their spring
grain. Be patient, brother farmers, Ore
gon never fails. - .
The wagon bridge built across the
slongh onto the Ingram it-land last sum
mer has stood the late freshet in the
rivet. It has been of great value to the
residents of the island this winter. They
feel proud of having a way of getting out
during the winter without resorting to a
row boat.
A number of ranchers in this vicinity
are making arrangements to erect more
shelter for their stock during the com
ing summer. They see necessity of
making better provision for their dumb
brutes. The last storm has made them
realize where they would be should they
have a severe winter.
Philomath.
Mr Willoughby, of E Idysville, is in
Philorrath for a few dayp.
Wm. Fry spent Sunday with Leonard
Moses, at the latter's home in this place.
Mr. Sexton, w ho owns the city livery
stable, has been improving his sidewalk.
Miss Grace Jolly spent last week in
Coivalli, vititing friends and relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. John Shriber are spend
ing a few days with their nephew, Albert
Shriber.
Rev. Mrs. McElroy is holding a very
successful revival meeting at Eddysvilje,
Lincoln county.
Jesse JVioses, Jr. is once more able to
be around, but his severe attack of the
pneumonia has left him rather weak.
Messrs. Turney and Goodnough will
give a concert at the college of Philo
math on March 5. Come and enjov the
evening.
B. T. Jenes, who lives about a mile
west of Philomath, while cutting wood
on his pface last Saturday, struck his
foot with his axe, inflicting a severe
wound.
As a note of warning, we w ill say to
the young ladies wishing to take horse
back rides after scl ool houis, they
should procure paddle?, as the Oregon
mud is deep and accidents might hap
pen. The members of the Philomath Gun
Club, are not discouraged by the results
of the shooting match held in Corvallis
last JVTonday. Several Philomath sports
men and their friends attenred the shoot
and report a pleasant, rainy time.
A number of residents are preparing to
fight against the San Jose scale, which
was found upon several trpes in this vi
cinity last fall. Let every one make an
effort to ppray and caie for their tree?.
There is a great amount of nice fruit in
this vicinity, if the orchards are proper
ly cared for.
The new walk, which begins at Mr.
Hill's place and ends at the crossing
near the school house, will soon be fin
ished. The walk on the north side of
the street has I een in a very bad condi
tion for some time, and the new one will
be a great convenience, especially to the
school children.

Miss Bessie Bradford is suffering with
an attack of scarletina. Is a little better
at this writing.
The Prohioitien League of this place
is very busy these days completfng ar
rangements for the local contest which
will he held March 3. '04.

horses as well as themselves. Ou the
evening of February 20 they served oys
ters to the public and realized a neat lit
tle sum to be used in building a horse
shed at the church. '
Philomath public schools are flourish
ing nndei the management of Prof.
Pratt and his energetic corps of teachers.
The spirit of patriotism is manifest in
the interest with which a Washington's
Birthday program was rendered on Fri
day afternoon. A number of visitors
were present. At the close of Jhe exer
cises the children were dismissed -and
Prof. Pratt presided over a pleasant and
profitable parents' and teachers' meet
ing. These meetings are held monthly
and prote a benefit to school and patron.
Subject for discussion was, "How cau
the teachers, pupils and parents be
brought into more perfect harmony."

Holy Week in Masbate, P. I.
. The place is the pueblo of Masba
te, and the time "holy week," the
native population have quit work,
" - an -act that comes natural to
them?, and are" out to enjoy" the
"fiesta". ; The first evening we are
visited by eleven old men wearing
brown habits with cowls, and carry
ing staffs with crosses on the ends.
They represented the eleven disci
ples, "Judas being dead", and after
wishing Buena3 tardea" ask for
alms. . This is asked of every house
in the pueblo, until the ending of
the fiesta".
Following these men oomes the
evening proceseion, consisting of al
most the entire population. As they
advance they sing, and in tbe pro
cession they carry platforms, upon
which are images of the Faints. We
were unable to distinguish them
but took particular notice of Mary
Magdalene who held in her right
hand a bottle of French perfume.
These images were taken from the
shrines erected in various parts of
the pueblo, to the church - and then
returned to the thrinei?. In the
evening the women gather before
these shrines, and on their knees,
sing the Htory of the crucifixion,
in a hu h key, and wierd ai d sing
song style. As our quarters were
very near a shrines, I became quite
familiar with the entire service, es
pecially so when they, kept at it un
til the small hours of the morning.
Oue morning we visited the
shrines, and at one tbe people had
put the im -ges on tbe ground, aud
were busily engaged changing the
decorations.
We asked the old "tao" the name
of a eaint, pointing to the image,
he ieplied ''San Juau", and "who
is this with- the key" we asked?
"San Pedro". Then pointing to the
image of Christ we said "who is
this paint". He replied "Jesu
Cristo". Now we wanted to "im
press the old fellow with "los Amer
acanos" ignorance of spiritual mat
ters, so we said "who is Christ"?
The old man turned slowly an J
with a look of compassion that
showed his pity for us, said in a sad
voice, "Senores don't you know"?
"Christ was a Spaniard from Gali
