mbllhmdmy Tummdms mmd F rldmy QAZETTE PUSUSHLTfO CO. O. A. Dearing, Ed. and Mgr. FRIDAY . JANTJABY 8, 1904. Yesterday the Christians of the Greek church celebrated their Christmas and the natal day of the pentle Nazarine was to be devoted to the pleasing task of exterminating tne ancient ene mies of the faith. In blood stained Kishineff 40,000 of God's chosen people ' wait in terror and dismay the coming of the holy day that is supposed to bring peace on earth, good will to man. The horror of the situation is said to be almost beyond compre hension. Up to the present mo ment no word has been received from Kishineff. and as yet we know not whether to weep in pity for the murdered dead, or laugh in derision at the huge joke perpetrated on us by the yellow press. The President, Congress, the Pulpit and the Press, have been asked to unite in pleadings to the Russian government to avert the dire calamity. The beam in our own eyes pales into insignificance beside the mote in that of our inhuman neighbor. What if Russia has just sen tenced twenty-five : zealous jew- baiters to a living death in Siberia for participating in the former trouble in Kishineff? What if the Czar asks us how many Americans guilty of burning ne eroes at the stake we have pun ished? Tell him to mind his own business. Only last week a thousand frenzied men in civ ilized Iowa tried to get a couple negroes out of jail to enact the leading parts in a friendly barbe cue. We have heard of no peti tions to Congress against this out rage. In our own town the proselytes of a new faith have rendered themselves objection able to some zealous exemplars of the old, and a coat of tar and feathers is administered and or ders given to emigrate. And still we weep for the imaginary wrongs of the people we know not, and smile at the ' 'acts of justice" at our own doors. "Oh would some power the Giftie gie us to see our sels as ithers see us."
