t CQRVALL1S GAZETTE wbllmhmd every Tuemdmy end Friday by the : GAZETTE PUBLISHING CO 0. A. Dearing, Ed. and Mgr. TUESDAY, JANUARY 5, 1903 EDITORIAL COMMENT. The Rev. N. J. Savage says there never was a garden. ' of Eden. How does he dispose of the indirect testimony of the fact that the sons of Adam all behave exactly like Pa? Seattle Post Intelligencer. Citizens of Pineapple, in the state of Alabama, lynched a ne gro prisoner in a manner com mendably free from ostentation. They simply knocked him on the head, poured kerosene over him, and burned the body without any spectacular stake effects. Hav ing done this act of justice, the citizens thought it would be a good idea to cover the marks of their execution by burning the jail, which they did with such efiect that a few stores were in cluded in, the conflagration. While negroes are plentiful in Alabama, stores are scarce, and the citizens are likely to get into trouble. Other towns should ab sorb these lessons, and "thank heaven they are not Pineapples." Grants Pass Observer. It is to lie hoped that Presi dent Roosevelt will consider the Pacific Coast in the appointment soon te be made of one of the members of the Panama Canal Commissioa. No part of the country is more vitally interest ed in the trans-isthmian water way than this coast. California has three candidates who are pull ing their wires for this position. It is time that Oregon newspa pers expressed their wishes on this subject, and let the people know that they have a choice in this matter. The Pacific Coast needs a good, strong, brainy representative, ne thoroughly familiar with our state and its needs, and we know of no man better qualified, or who would be more satisfactory to the mass ot the people than Harvey W. Scott, editor of the Portland Oregonian. Our colleges and educational institutions are turning out more professional men than we have any use for. The boys and girls who shirk the schools in their youth are growing into the com- vgmon laborers or tramps of the PTUture, and of this class we have more than, enough. What the country " needs is more of the practical men who know how to do things more good farmers, more manufacturers, and more skilled labor. Not so much the mechanic who is to be taught to handle tools and machinery, but the mechanic who knows why certain results always follow cer tain causes. May the day be -hastened when the technical will crowd out and take the place of the classical, and .the sectarian colleges of the last hundred years be changed to agricultural and technical colleges that are doing so much to shape and control the better, prouder civilization of the future.
