This blighting curse has been handed down from nation to nation and from ' individual to individual till it has spread to all parts of the wprld. Contagious blood poison, as it is called in modern times, begins with a small sore or ulcer through which a.1. ! a a 44 rws r 11 ine virus enters tne Diooa. mis is iouowea by innam- znation and swelling of the glands of the groins, a red eruption breaks out on the body, sores appear in the mouth and the throat becomes ulcerated, and as the disease takes a deeper hold and the blood becomes jtnord thoroughly infected, the hair and eyebrows drop out, the skin is spotted with copper-colored splotches, the bones and muscles ache, and it seems to the victim of this monster scourge there is not a sound spot in the whole body, i . The horror of this awful disease ( ? can never be told. The one who con tracts it suffers in body and mind, and if the poison is not eradicated transmits the taint to his children, and Contagious Blood Poison thus becomes responsible for many of the ills of childhood Skin Eruptions, Catarrhal Troubles, Sore Eyes, Scalp Disease, White Swelling, Scrofula and others just as bad. Have you no skull of Cromwell here 7" "No, madam," the attendant answered. "How very odd," she exclaimed; "they have a fine one in the museum at Ox ford." On his first visit to London, an Aberdeen youth visited a refreshment parlor and, noting a woman eating an ice, said to the waiter: "Hi, man, gi'e me yin o thae." Being supplied, he took a spoonful, and made a wry face. "I'm dootin' it's a bit frost bitten, mis ter," said he. "Oh, no, sir," remarked the waiter, "It's an Ice." "Gosh! Do they eat Ice in London?" asked the wondering Aberdonian; "man, we slide an' skate on't in Aberdeen!" James M. Barrie, the novelist, has no patience with reporters who try to pry into his private affairs. On one occasion he was asked to pen a short autobiography. At first he refused, and then, when the reporter began to coax him, he stopped him, took up his pen, and wrote as follows: "On ar rival in London it was Mr. Barrie's first object to make a collection of choice cigars. Though the author of 'My Lady Nicotine does not himself smoke, his grocer's message-boy does. Mr. Barrie's pet animal is the whale. He feeds it on ripe chestnuts." Andrew Carnegie is only a few inch es above five feet in height. Hemry W. Phip'ps, his old partner, is not an Inch taller, and John Walker, the other member of the trio who revolutionized the manufacture of steel, has perhaps a little the better of both Carnegie and Phipps. As for Henry C. Frick. his head would just about reach to the shoulder of a man of ordinary height. It is said that one day, when these four steel masters were walking together on the streets of Pittsburg, . a boot black called out to his business rival further down the block, as the mil lionaires passed: "Eh, Jimmy, git onto der runts!" Walking home from school, the other day, some children were discussing the perfection and usefulness of their re spective fathers. "My father's the best man in the world," said one little girl; "he is a minister. He makes people go to church." "Mine is the best." piped up another; "he's a doctor. He makes sick people well so they can go to church." Three or four more enlarged upon the benefit the world derived from their fathers, when final ly a sweet, blue-eyed little girl said: "My papa's the best of all. He's a poet." "A poet!" said another, in sym pathetic surprise; "why, a poet isn't a profession! It's a disease!" Some curious anecdotes are related of Hermann Zunipe, the Wagnerian conductor at Munich, who died sud denly a few weeks ago. He was well known to be a spiritualist, and be lieved that the ghosts of dead compos er inspired his conducting of their works. One day Zumpe told another conductor of note how Beethoven's spirit was present during the perform ance of one of the symphonies, and so pleased was the ghost that, after the end of the first movement, he ex claimed: "At last!" "Ah, my dear fellow," exclaimed the other conductor, "surely Beethoven made a mistake. He thought it was the end of th'e last movement" Knew the Voice. Like many other blind people, the late Mr. Milburn, chaplain of Con gress, could identify people by their voices even when he did not know them well, or had not seen them for years. This is not strange when we remember that Helen Keller, who Is deaf and blind, can meet ten people at once whom she has never "seen" be fore, and when they shake hands .with her to say good-by, can call them all by their right names, identifying them by the feeling of their hands.. The Boston Transcript tells a story which illustrates the pwer among the blind to recognize voices. j Once, when Mr. Milburn was out driving, a man stopped the carriage and beckoned Mr. Milburn's friend to come across the street. He went, and the stranger said: "When I was 18 or . 20 years old Doctor ' Milburn was in the habit of dining with my father. I want to see if he will know me by my voice." The two men went back to Mr. Mil burn's carriage. The stranger said: "Dr. Milburn, do you know meV "Yes, sir, you are the son of my old friend, the publisher, Mr. Harper." Mr. Milburn had not heard the voice for more than thirty years. Not long before Mr. Milburn died Bishop Cranston visited him and en tered the room without having his name announced. When he spoke, Mr. Milburn called him by his name. They had not met for twenty-nine years. Tbose Picture Puzzles. "Oh, I know what's the matter with you!" cried Mrs. Tankley. The railroad car will carry as much as twenty teams of horses could haul, and the great ocean steamers will transport as much as 400 railroad cars can carry. Marriages may be made in heaven, but a lot of them end in the other place. - - ABUSE GERMAN SOLDIERS. Privates Are Treated with tbe Great eat I nd lenity by Their Officers. There have recently been a good many convictions of German army officers for abuse of military authority In the treatment of subordinates and have recently been exciting painful at tention. Since January 1. 1903, there have been 150 convictions of officers and non-commissioned officers for cruelty to their men, and tbe sentences of Imprisonment or incarceration in a fortress which have been imposed amount, when added together, to over fifty years. Between the end of June and the end of September there have been no fewer than eighty convictions of this kind, involving sentences of imprisonment the total terms of which amounted to over twenty-four years, to say nothing of condemnations in volving Incarceration in a fortress, degradation and- other penalties. Eleven of, these eighty convictions were against officers and as their pun ishments varied between four months' Incarceration In a fortress and seven days' ordinary arrest it Is assumed that their offenses were not of such a heinous character as those of the non-commissioned officers. In one case, however, an officer was sentenced to two months' Imprisonment and was dismissed from the service. The heavi est sentence was that which was im posed upon the non-commissioned offi cer Breidenbach, of ,the Fourth Guards regiment, who was condemned to eight years' Imprisonment for a very large number of aggravated cruelties Inflict ed upon the men of his company. I The cases have been most numerous among the Infantry and artillery; there has been only one case In the cavalry. By far the largest number of cases were in the Prussian contingent, where the penalties inflicted amounted to a total of over twenty-three years' Im prisonment In' Bavaria and about five months in Saxony. It must be remem bered, however, that the Prussian con tingent represents more than three fourths of the whole strength of the German army. DESTINY OF HUMAN SOULS, Theory That the Spirits of Depraved Men Pass Into the Beasts, Are the bodies of animals Inhabited by the souls of human villains dead and gone? Don't sneer too hastily at the question, for If it should be' an swered finally In the negative science Is at a loss to account for the utter depravity of the animals. It is ap parent to . the dullest observer that dumb beasts exercise a malign influ ence over man. Think of the tempers ruined by cows that have kicked over half -filled palls of milk. Think of the reputations for truth that have been destroyed by trout. Think of the hon esty that has been turned Into deceit by the horse, so that they who trade in that animal are bywords among their less sorely tempted brethren. Think of the indefinite prolongation of this list that might be made and then con sider If animals are or are not ani mated by the souls of human wretches that-have passed away. Some such theory must be accepted and It is not open to doubt that rea sonable people will accept , this: The souls of the wicked are condemned to pass into animals and to stay there until they have discovered prospective tenants worse than themselves. This theory explains everything. The liars inhabit fish," the tricksters horses and those given to butting In become goats. In the attempt to end their tenancy by finding suitable successors the evil spirits resort to temptation, with, alas! unfailing success. The half pound trout dropping off the hook flaps his tall in ecstatic certainty that the angler will proclaim him a five-pounder at least. And the look of human anticipation on the face of a goat about to knock some unsuspecting per son into a barbed wire fence can only proceed from the knowledge that the resultant explosion will lower another soul into the mire as a stepping stone for himself. The theory is Irrefutable and Its general acceptance would help the world to a higher plane. Portland Oregonian. UNIQUE BUTTONHOLE CUTTER. Some of the most simple ideas of the Inventive genius have proven of the most value to humanity, and it is safe to venture that the idea of a Penn sylvania man for a buttonhole cutting scissors will develop into a wonderful aid to all those dressmakers and oth ers Into whose hands it may fall. There' have been buttonhole-cutting scissors before, it Is true, but here is an affair that combines an ordinary pair of scissors with one that will BUTTONHOLE CTJTTEB. make the little slits in the cloth and will avert all necessity for laying down one of the tools of seamstress' art for the picking up of another. This arrangement, which is made plain by the accompanying picture, consists of a pair of scissors which can be used In ordinary cutting, to the handle of which is affixed a peculiarly shaped cutting blade which will do the buttonhole work in an instant when the cloth is placed beneath it. There is no danger of its being mis laid or lost, for the worker has it ever before her, as she does the other cut ting necessary in her work.
