THE CORVALUS GAZETTE Published every Tuesday acid f rlCay by the GAZETTE PUBLISHING CO. 0. A. Dearing, Ed. and Mgr. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 3903 EDITORIAL COMMENT. How time does biing abcut its revenges. Our ancestors made the fight of their lives against taxation without representation. The fight now on in Oregon is for taxation without mis'-repre-sentation. It is to be regretted that the Engineer department of the Uni ted States has reported adversely on the appropriation, recom mended by Major Langfett, for the improvement in the dam ot the Yamhill river. As it is at present the ' river is closed to navigation on an average of 80 days each year and it is feared that the present adveise report of General Gillespie will prevent any appropriation for the Yam hill in the next river and harbor bill. We regret any legislation that works against the interests ot the Willamette Valley. mf ml There seems to be little doubt that if the special session of the . legislature shall repeal the next tax law, that the old law would still remain in force without any action on the part of the body to re-enact it. The old law remains in force until Jan. j, '04 unless repealed r superseded by an other, and if the new law is re pealed before that - time it is equivalent - to no change in the old law. This would be the quickest way out of the present difficulty. Whether it would be the best way out remains' to "be proved. . Receiver Thompson of the La Grande Land Office, who was re cently suspended from his office, tried and acquitted afterwards, is sun in irouDie. ruaer mvesu gations by special Inspector Green have brought to light a large amount of other evidence on which charges have been filed against Thompson that the In spector claims to be sufficiently serious to warrant the appoint ment of another person to the . position, inese cnarges nave not yet been made public, but have all been sent to Washing ton . There must be something lacking in the system of morality taught at the present day, or something in the atmosphere of a land office, that leads to so much dishonesty in this depart ment. Which is it? ' . jfc 3 Maior General McArthur, of the U. S. Army, now stationed at Honolulu is credited with pre dicting a war with Germany, as one of the probabilities of the near future. The immediate cause is said to be the growing interests of Germany in South America, where colonies num bering hundreds of " thousands have been settled and are now prospering. This he avers win cause a straining of the Monroe doctrine and a possible appeal to arms. In that case the capture of the Hawaiian Islands would be the first consideration, as their strategic importance is acknowl edged by all countries. There is every probability that the words of the General have been exag gerated, and that he may have incidentally reierrea to tne possi bility of a war with some foreign mm m f . . power as an argument in favor of properly defending the Hawaiian Islands. All the same the mat ter is worthy of consideration. The display of hoodlumism shown at thV revival meeting in the Kings' Valley church, the other evening, where some vic ious youngsters fusiladed the col ored preacher with stale eggs, is receiving1 altogether too much notice from the press of this state. Whether it was the fool'sh act of a lot of boys led on by a spirit of mischief only, or an exhibition of race prejudice by older scala wags, is at present unknown.. Perhaps the ordinary Kings Val ley hoodlum is particular regard ing the source from whence he receives salvation, and doesn't take kindly to the brand handed out by the colored man and brother. He may have rights in the premises that we do not fully understand. Luckily the missiles did, not hit the mark intended. Whether the Reverend Vernon's ability as a dodjer of bad eggs is inherited or- acquired, he cer tainly showed 'him&elf a master of the art. It is rumored that a reward of $250 has been offered for the arrest of the miscreants. We hope they may catch them, and if found to be mere boys, that a vigorous application of birch be used to teach them bet ter manners. 0. A. C. We have another family added to our number. Mr. Wilson, late of Iowa, has rented the small farm of Paul Johnson. Two young men, late of Ken tucky, we have not baen able to learn their names, have bought the Davis farm and soon expect to pose as full-fledged Ore gonians. ; Geo. It was built in 1851 and constructed 01 logs and' pre sented a very humble appearance yet Johnson has made it his home tor the last 52 years and he seems to think that he is quite , unfor tunate and has suffered a heavy loss. During the night the house caught fire, probably from the flue, and was well under head way when Mr. Johnson awoke with the flames around him. He is old and feeble and 'was just aDie to escape, and then alter his beard was singed with the flames. .cverytningr in the house was burned, not a thing was saved. 60 different games all new '- oae ia each package of Lion C off ' at your Grocer's.
