7 ) 2 m IHE CORVALLIS GAZETTE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1903. EDITORIAL COMMENT. Now that the ladies are taking a hand in the hold up business is Portland, the question of plat -ingr this class of criminals on the monthly license list should be se riously considered. Portland needs more monev to clean her self ud for the Lewis & Clark Fair, and new sources ot income, in line with her. present system of supply should be welcome. ly all means let the mayor and chiei look into tie matter, it may prove a bonanza. Stop your raids on these gentry until after they have paid their fines they may not kick, as the Chinamen do, if you don't keep faith with them and the city needs the nun. 5 3 Seattle is considering the ad- visabililv of making: the murder of infants a misdemeanor. Well babies dont vote, and milkmen who sell noisoned milk do. Per haps they have a Milkman' Union, that might lay a boycott on the city. Seattle has a ngh to fix the standard ot its own moral equipoise. But there are noble-minded people, in greater numbers than ever before, who feel a sense of responsibility for the demadation of their fellow men. A great many years ago Seattle woke up to a sense of its duty to civilization and hanged several thugs to a scantling on old First street Isn't it time for ' history to repeat itself? i? t A man goes into Wall street, says the West, and bets thous ands of dollars that a certain stock will go up or down that's business. He goes out to the race track and bets that a certain horse will come in first that's sport. He goes into a back room, sits all night in a smoke laden, drink laden atmosphere and bets that his hand is worth more than the other fellow's that's gam bling, and the man is liable to be arrested for it. Do you see any difference? Any more than the first two are carried on openly and the man is playing another man's eame, while, when he plays poker, he nlavs his own It's true also that the expert gets the man's money quicker m Wall street and on the turt, than when it has to be won at poker -but he gets it just the same. School Program. The following program is fur nished us by Sup't Denman for publication. The program was prepared under the supervision of the state superintendent. While it is a most difficult task to pre pare a program suitable to the conditions ot all the districts of any county, still such a program will bring forth much good. It will tend to harmonize the daily work throughout the state; sys temize the work of each school; minimize the time lost by too many recitations, and eliminate many of the needless recitations, Every teacher in the county should strive to put this program into execution. Try it anyway, even if it seem, a most difficult task: Arithmetic, 60 minutes; Read ing, 90 minutes; Geography, 40 minutes; Language, 30 minutes; History, Constitution and Read ing, 40 minutes; Writing, Lan guage, 20 minutes; Physiology, Nature Study, etc., 30 minutes; Spelling, 20 minutes. The full details, though impor tant to Jthef teachers, are not of general Interest. They have been published in circular form, and copies are in possession of every teacher in the county.
