HE CORVALLIS GAZETtt FRIDAY OOrOBER 2, 19C3. EDITORIAL COMMENT. The State Boa id of Health aJ viefg CorvaUis tc filter the water taken from' the city water works. jfc One of the Portland judg hns decided that taxes cannot be col lected next year, and the cape has been appealed to the supreme court for decision. If th supreme court affirms J u J ire ClelandV decision, there cai: be no taxes colltcted un til there is a SDt-cial session of the legislature to remedy the law. That means trouble all over the state. What a travesty it boasted civilization, every man in town is on our nearly yesterday moraine1, was . wearing: a broad smile. The stables report not single rigr of any description left, Teams starting ofi in all direc tions, with men and boys. And the cause of all the excitement is the beginine of'.ue open season for China pheasants. The law gives the privilege of killing something, and to kill something is mans chief delight. The great object and aim in life is now to see who will get the biggest string. Truly are we barbarians all - The races of the Multnomah Fair Association, held at Irving ton Park, Portland, from Sept 22 to Sept 26, have demonstrated the fact that honest racing wil receive the sanction of the public and will be well patronized. Over 7000 people attended the meet. The races were square and honest efforts. The best horses won, and there was no trickery allowed. Nothing else could be expected from the men who composed the association tinder the presidency of such roval sportsman as Lou Adams, ot the Transfer Co. We extend our congratulations. The name of our popular pho tographer, W. G. fcmery, ap pears among the list of artists whose work was selected by the judges at the annual convention of the ohotoeraohers of the Northwest. held at Salem last week,. , as worthy of sufficien merit to form a collection o: oictures to be sent next' year to " the National Convention, .. where it will be known as the official exhibit of the P. A. of the P. N. W. This exhibit will also be sent to the California Conven tion. to be held in San Francisco next month, and also to the World's Fair at St. Louis in 1 004. Our reporter learns from Mr. Emery that the photos selec ted from his exhibit were of two little girls living in Corvallis, one a 11x14 carbon of Lois Gould and an 8x10 carbon of Inez Grant, The . perfect poses and sweet faces of these little tots will therefore meet the admiring gaze of many thousands during tne two years wnicn win eiapse before their return home. j j - Tohn M. Robertson, the liber al candidate for parliament in England, has a very interesting article in the International Re view on the black and white races in Africa, and the effects of religion., . From this article we quote a few paragraphs that are worthy of serious thought. He shows, what will be a sur prise to many, that Mohammed anism has done more to elevate and civilize the native tribes -of Africa than Christianity. ; While the slave trade is still conducted by the Arabs, this is done in spite of the religion of Islam, which gives far less sanc tion to slavery than used to be drawn from the Bible by slave traders in the United States. Wherever the natives embrace Mohammedanism the slave trade ceases, the raiders only making captives r of the unbelievers. Complete Mohammedanization of Africa would wipe but that traffic "In human flesh and blood. , Mohammedism also eliminates the drink evil wherever it is established, and it must be re membered that it was established in Africa by the so-called Chrisr tian nations, and the opium traffic as well. , We pass this question without comment, on to the committee on Foreign Missions, at the meet ing of one of the great branches f religious work to be held in one of our Corvallis churches in a few days. As Grover expresses it, "It is a condition that con fronts us, not a theory." ' Assessment for Sewer.
